Ettore Bugatti was born at Milan on September
1881 into a
family of
artists. At the age of 14 he became interested in motor tricycles and
in
1900 he designed his first car and built it with his own hands. This
car
won an award at the first international motor show in Milan. After this
Bugatti worked for de Dietrich, Mathis and Deutz before he started his
own factory at Molsheim, Alsace in late 1909. Only the best was good
enough for Bugatti and he even designed the machine tools used at the
factory. Although the total production of Bugatties was small the results at the racing tracks during the 1920'ies has made the brand legendary. All racing Bugatties were small and light yet with powerful engines. While Type 29 is no exception, but Bugatti decided to add streamlining as well. Air inlet for the radiator was through a small hole in the bulbous front cowling. And the almost cylindrical body ended in a tapering tail through which the exhaust pipe passed. It earned the nickname 'Cigar' both from it's shape and from the plume of smoke coming from the tail. At the 1922 French Grand Prix at Strasbourg Type 29s driven by Vizcaya and Marco finished second and third behind a Fiat. Type 29 was only an interim solution and already next year Bugatti turned up with a new type. So I decided to make this racer black and not the official French racing color as if it was used second-hand. Besides that I am also working on another Bugatti! |
