Assignment 1.1

Part a: underline "tijdsbepalingen van verleden tijd" in this story.

Part b: mark the "werkwoorden" in the sentences with a "tijdsbepaling van verleden tijd"

I'm Joop Hogerwerf. Originally I'm teacher of English, but these days I'm mostly concerned with Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for Albeda College.

I was born in Dirksland (Goeree Overflakkee) in 1962. In 1963 the family (my father, mother and tiny little me) moved to Rotterdam and I lived in Lombardijen till I was about 28 years old. I followed the HAVO and Teachers Training College at which I studied English and Health Education.

In 1985 I got my first job as a teacher of Health Education at a school for health, welfare, food and social services in Rotterdam. It was a part time job, but it kept me busy enough. In 1989 I got a full time job teaching English at a technical college in the North of Rotterdam. There I became chairman of the personnel committee, coordinator for the non technical subjects and ICT-coordinator.

I've been fascinated by the possibilities that computers can have for education for a long time. It grew to be one of my hobbies. Interactive CD-ROMs, multimedia, internet and e-learning can make studying so much more fun and so much more effective.

So I was really glad that I was offered the job as  e-learning project counsellor for GSK (Specialised Cooks). I started in February 2001 and have really enjoyed doing it.  As GSK didn't have a teacher of English at that time, I volunteered to teach those lessons. As a project counsellor I:
- write a lot of reports, minutes, articles and booklets;
- organise and take part in many meetings and courses;
- try to keep up with the technical developments of e-learning software (e.g. N@tschool and Blackboard)

Last year I also started to work for the ITbrug. Follow the link for more info.

I work for GSK on Thursdays. The rest of the week I work for the ITbrug of the ICT academy of Albeda College. There I have even more meetings, more reports and more distance leaning and e-learning. I'm also the webmaster of the website of the ITbrug.

Though I work quite a few hours a week, I also try to spend a lot of time with the family. Yes, I'm married with two children (and to my wife!). Luuk - my oldest son - is five years old now and Tom is two and a half. Both of them are real busy bodies and great fun to play with.

My hobbies are building websites, playing the clarinet (also in a wind band), jogging and playing tennis (in summer) and squash (in winter). Due to lack of time I spend far too few hours on my hobbies! I haven't played squash for ages, but intend to pick it up again really soon.

1.2 The Simple Past tense (simpele verleden tijd)

A) Hoe ziet de simple past eruit?

•De zogenaamde tweede vorm van het werkwoord.

»to go-- went-- have gone

»to see-- saw-- have seen

»to work--worked--have worked (regelmatig)

»to bring--brought--have brought

B) Hoe wordt de simple past gebruikt?

–verplicht gebruik indien:

•De handeling is afgelopen!

–

–Dus bij duidelijke verleden tijdsbepalingen:

»last year, month, night, week etc.

»two years ago, three days ago etc.

»1988, 1945, 1825…. Als het maar afgelopen is.

•

c) Voorbeelden van de simple past

•I saw him yesterday

•The holidays were nice last year

•We had a good harvest last autumn

•During WWII he fought in Egypt

•An hour ago he lost his wallet

•Omdat de tijdsbepalingen aangeven dat het afgelopen is moet men hier de simple past gebruiken.

D) Makkelijk of toch niet??

•I saw him yesterday

•The holidays were nice last year

•We had a good harvest last autumn

•During WWII he fought in Egypt

•An hour ago he lost his wallet

•Hier staan de zinnen nog een keer. In het Nederlands mogen we ook de voltooide tijd gebruiken met: hebben!

•Dit mag dus niet in het Engels!!!

Dit zijn foute zinnen!!

I have seen him yesterday.

The holidays have been nice last year.

We have had a good harvest last autumn.

During WWII he has fought in Egypt.
