In the beginning there was no earth, no sea or sky, only emptiness waiting to be filled. In the south, the fiery realm of Muspell came into being. In the north, the icy realm Niflheim. Fire and ice played in the emptiness. In the center of nothingness, where the warm air of Muspell and the cool of Niflheim met, the air grew mild and ice began to melt. The water from the ice formed into a great sleeping giant.
He was the evil Ymir.
As Ymir slept he began to sweat. From this grew a male from one arm and a female from the other. From his legs another male formed. These three were the frost giants.
The ice melted again and a cow named Audhumla was formed. Four rivers of milk flowed form her and fed Ymir. Audhumla fed herself by licking surrounding ice. As she licked, she uncovered a man named Buri. Buri’s son married a daughter of the frost giants and had three sons: Odin, Vili and ve.
These three hated the cruel Ymir and slew him. From Ymir’s flesh, the three made the earth. From his shattered bones and teeth, they made rock and stone. Ymir’s blood was made lakes and rivers adn circled the earth with an ocean of his blood. HIs skull was made into sky and secured at four points by four dwarfs named North, South East and West. They threw Muspell’s fire high to make the sun, moon and stars. Ymir’s brain made clouds.
One day the three found two logs. Odin gave them breath and life. Vili gave them brains and feelings. He gave them hearing and sight. So the first man and woman were made.
