My Fencing Journal

Day 1

Day: 1 Thursday 11.01.01
Status: Beginner - 1st Lesson! (Don't know anything)
Learned/Tried:
  • Footwork - hop, lunge, advance, and retreat.
  • On Guard stand - Knees bent, feet forming 90° angle with dominate foot facing opponent, back straight, dominate hand gripping foil (one of three types of fencing swords, see Terms), other hand held away from body, and head facing opponent.

Practiced: beat, parry, remise, and lunge (see terms).
Fence: Watched other people in the class fence, but I didn't get to fence. Learned how the began a bout (see Terms).

Thoughts: "Oh boy, look what you've gotten yourself into now. You're going have a hard time learning how to do this." Fencing seems like it's going to take a lot of practice especially for a clumsy person like me. Why couldn't I pick something easier to do my senior project on? I know why because I wanted to learn this and I told myself I would. Therefore, I'm going to no matter how hard it may be. It looked real fun and the people in the class seemed to be nice.
