Yang style taijiquan originated with Yang Chengfu, who modified the forms he learned from his father and uncles to make them suitable for ordinary people to practice to improve and maintain their health.  His grandfather, Yang Luchan, was the first to teach taijiquan to officials in Beijing during the Qing dynasty.   Some of the leaps and kicks used by his grandfather, father and uncles in fighting were eliminated by Yang Chengfu to simplify the movements, which were standardized in 1956 by the Ministry of Sport of the People's Republic of China.

Dong Yingjie (Doong Ying Git in Cantonese) was one of Yang Chengfu's distinguished disciples who moved to Hong Kong during the Chinese civil war and taught thousands of students who are now spread around the world.  These students and their students gather yearly in Hong Kong for a banquet in memory of Cheong Sam Foong, the legendary founder of taijiquan.
