   Day 3

The first ray of light shone through the windows like golden arrows being shot from a bow, filling the pitch-black darkness in the dormitory with warmth and light. The constant fluctuating crowing of the rooster woke everybody up. By 0700hrs, everybody was refreshed by the morning shower and coldness of the fresh air. They were treated to an impressive mountainous scenery covered in a thick mist, which was simply breathtaking. The cool refreshing wind was revitalising to the soul.

Breakfast was served at 0730hrs; everybody tucked in hungrily to a hearty and scrumptious western breakfast. With scrambled eggs, coffee and toast, where else can anybody find breakfast as perfect and delicious as this!

After breakfast, the excited GIS students got their equipment and proceeded to the briefing room located beside the Paddy Fields' Bar. The group leaders gave their report; some of them were humorous. At 1000hrs, we got our lunchboxes and were ready for our mission. Brainslayers; Group 1 was stationed at the dam. Pinky and Valli's Angels, group 2 and 3 respectively were stationed about 200 metres apart from each other. As it was our first time participating in such a major project, everybody was filled with both excitement and nervousness. But the singing of songs somehow relieved our fears, also boosting our morale and confidence. We were going to change the hill tribes' lifestyle!

The 10-minute long ride uphill was cooling and refreshing, making us even more enthusiastic and hyperactive than ever! After reaching the hilltop, we proceeded to our proposed worksite. The mountainous and steep terrain made our work difficult. United in one mind, heart and soul, we co-ordinated ourselves, co-operated with each other and worked continuously despite the obstacles that we faced. As we gathered momentum, we were oblivious of the insects flying and buzzing around us. We marvelled at the villagers' experience of the terrain. They seemed like experts and trekking to them was like a piece of cake!

At 1300hrs, we stopped for a break and had lunch together under the shade of the trees. With our energy re-fuelled, we continued with our work. By 1600hrs, Brainslayers, Pinky and Valli's Angels had met their target. They had unrolled about 600 metres of pipeline. Though Group 4, 5 and 6 had not managed to meet their targets, they were not discouraged. Reinforcements (Groups 1, 2 & 3) would be coming in the next day. After packing up, we trekked up the mountain to the main road. From there, we took the lorry back to the Mae Kok River Village Resort. Everybody had a proper wash up to get rid of the stink and filth.

Dinner was served at 1830hrs. We had spicy Thai food. By then, night had fallen. The air turned cold, which left some of us shivering. At 2000hrs, it was free and easy. Some of us went to the bar (Strictly No Liquor!) to party, while some of us stayed in the dormitories. By 2300hrs, lights were out. The nocturnal animals were roaming outside and could be heard. We looked forward to Day 4, and waited for what might be in stored for us.
