William ran away from home when he was about 18 and headed for eastern
Iowa. He ended up in Benton County where he worked for the father of
Professor Rex Beresford of Iowa State University. Professor
Beresford's father, also an old English immigrant, wanted him to stay,
but told him he should go home at Christmas to be with his father. But
after visiting with him, if he wanted to come back, Mr. Beresford
would have been happy to have him. He would have stayed, but his
grandmother Melissa Goff convinced him to come home. He got along well
with his grandmother, but not his father.
William was a well-known stockman and horseman. Horses occupied much
of his life. In later years his hobby was buying and selling
horse-drawn machinery.
