N I T: help
Trying to figure out something while you're teaching yourself
to knit or working on a project can make you want to rip out
your hair (and in some cases, rip out your knitting). Everyone
learns differently. Some of the sites I didn't like might
hold the
answer for you. Here's some linkage with information. Try
'em all.
HOW TO . . .KNIT
www.about.com
The about guide lady seems perky and fun. I didn't have much
luck finding a solution to one of my problems, but you might.
www.lionbrandyarn.com
The first scarf I ever knit was made from Woolease Thick and
Quick. It's not Lion Brand's fault it was also Wide and Ugly
(My husband still wears it with pride, though). Instructions
can be found here. Lion offers a free newsletter and patterns
and has really updated their product line.
www.marthastewart.com
Quiet, you! The instructions are not great, but there is a
cute scarf pattern available.
www.knittinghelp.com
Site chockablock full of videos, showing both the Continental
and English Method of doing the stitch(es).
www.knitty.com
Smart e-zine with articles, how to's and free patterns! Yay!
www.vogueknitting.com
Great technical information with clear diagrams. I bought
their book. Forget the fashionista stereotype, the Vogue site
offers
good solid techincal advice. They still have lots of fashionista
stuff, though, if you don't want to miss out on that.
WHERE TO . . .BUY YARN AND SUPPLIES
If you have a LYS (local yarn store), I cannot encourage
you enough to go there and support it.
Join their knitting circle, too! However, if you have limited
choices you might want to consider the following:
www.helloyarn.com
Adrian Bizilia is a trained artist. Her site offers handspun/dyed
yarns for sale, along with knitting and spinning kits
and she has some of her own hand-knitted pieces for sale as
well. Plus, her site is just.too.cute.
The yarn image at the top of this page is a sample of her
spinning/dyeing work.
www.kaliedoscopeyarns.com
Great site with good prices and selection of commerical yarns
and supplies like needles and bags, etc.
They have kits available and I have found the customer service
to be excellent.
www.knitpicks.com
Good products at good prices. My "virtual knitting circle"
says to check out the deals on the merino wool.
www.save-on-crafts.com
Good prices, limited selection. I saved A LOT of money on
my wedding supplies
(not knitting related, I know, but they do have deals on knitting
stuff).
www.ebay.com
Well, no duh! You can find just about anything on Ebay.
www.theyarnco.com
Lots of high-end yarns. Owned by the authors of "The
Yarn Girls Guide to Simple Knits.
You can't order from the website, you have to phone in, but
the service is still good.
