Connectors Application Choice Wizard.

Choice the type of Electric Current, and Configuration of Printed Circuit Card, Back-Panel or Cable assembly.

Best viewed at 17" display.



Gender of Connector - MALE or FEMALE are defined, in generally, by Gender of their Contacts.
Gender of Connectors Body mostly is opposite to Gender of Connector Contacts.
Both Connectors have a same quantity of position. See some Info about   Applications  and   Connectors.

You need to define the Connection by Technical Parameters:

1. Electric Current Application ( Female Connector on Current Source Side! ):

Data Transfer Application - "Low" Frequency Rate(less than 1 MHz), low Voltage(90/45 Volt - milliVolts DC)
and low Working Current(less than 1A DC) of multiple parallel connections;

Power Supply Application - "High" AC/DC(10-50 Ampere) and "Low" DC(3-10 A) Current;

High Frequency - RF(Coax) Data Transfer Application - "High" Rate (1 MHz and Up), Serial Data - mostly 1 connection Coaxial;

2. Physical Configuration of Connection:

Device-to-Device (Cable-to-Device) or
Board-to-Board (Perpendicular = RA PCB = Right Angle = Normal = "T" or Straight = STR PCB = Parrallel = "Sandwich" = "PiggiBack") or
Cable-to-Board (Cable-to-Rack, Cable-to-Cable).

Data Transfer Application.
  • Backplane-to-Card Appl.: Backplane Conn.MAIL,STR PCB mate with Card Conn.FEMALE,RA PCB.
        Recommended Types: Hard Metric, Interconnection System, DIN

  • Card-to-Card Appl.("Sandwich" or "Piggyback"): Conn.MALE,STR PCB mate with Conn.FEMALE,STR PCB.
        Recommended Types: Hard Metric, Leaf Contact Connectors, Interconnection System, DIN.

  • Card-to-Card Appl.("T"): Conn.MALE,STR PCB mate with Conn.FEMALE,RA PCB. Female Connector on Current Source Side!
  • Card-to-Card Appl.(opposite "T"): Conn.FEMALE,STR PCB mate with Conn.MALE,RA PCB. Female Connector on Current Source Side!
        Recommended Types: Interconnection System, Hard Metric, Leaf Contact Connectors, DIN, Card Edge

  •    Cable-to-Card Appl.: Conn.FEMALE,STR Cable mate with Conn.MALE,RA or STR PCB.
  • Cable-to-Card Appl.(opposite): Conn.Shrouded MALE,STR Cable mate with Conn.FEMALE,RA or STR PCB.
        Recommended Types:
    D-Type, Leaf Contact Connectors(Champ®AMP), Data(RJ), Flat Cable System, Interconnection System, Hard Metric

  •   Choice the Type:
    Data-Telephone, Card Edge, DIN, D-Type, Interconnection System, Hard Metric, Flat Cable System, Leaf Contact Connectors.

    Power Supply Application
  • Backplain-to-Card Appl.: Backplane Conn.Power MALE,STR PCB mate with Card Conn.FEMALE,STR PCB.(or opposite)
        Female Connector on Current Source Side! Polarization required!
        Recommended Types: Interconnection System, Hard Metric, DIN, Power.

  • Card-to-Card Appl.: Conn.Power MALE,STR PCB. mate with Conn.FEMALE,STR PCB.
        Recommended Types: Mate-and-Lock, DIN, Interconnection System, Power, Hard Metric.

  •    Cable-to-Card Appl.: Conn.Power FEMALE or Shrouded MALE,STR Cable mate with Conn.MALE or FEMALE,RA or STR PCB.     Female Connector on Current Source Side! Polarization required!

        Recommended Types: Mate-and-Lock, D-Type (Combo with Power Contacts), Power, DIN (with Power Contacts), Interconnection System,
    Hard Metric(with Power Contacts).


  •   Choice the Type: DIN, D-Type, Interconnection System, Hard Metric, Power, Mate-and-Lock.

    Coax - High Frequency Data Transfer Application
  •    Cable-to-Card Appl.: Conn.Coax STR or RA Cable mate with Conn.RA or STR PCB.

  •    Cable-to-Cable Appl.: Conn.Coax STR or RA Cable mate with Conn.RA or STR Cable, Rack Panel mounted or Free Hang.

  •   Choice the Type: Coax, D-Type (Combo with Coax Contacts), DIN (with Coax Contacts)


    3. Quality Level of Connector depend to:
    Time Life of System (Years) + Work Conditions (Indoor or Outdoor) + Cost of Failure.
    Quality correspond with "Right" Type of Connector, which allowed to just specified Application,
    Well Known - Approved Manufacturer, Quality(and Thickness) of Contacts Plating.
    In general -
        5 microinch Gold Plating (Flash Gold) good enough for Toy,
        15 for End User Device,
        30 for Communication and
        50-100 for Military and Test Fixture.

    1 micrometer = 40 microinches.

    4. Quantity of Connections(Contacts): It's not a "Hard" Parameter, if you define both sides of Connection initially.
