WMC2003 Party Reviews
After
arriving in South Beach on Tuesday, I decided to check out the Chez
Wave and Bombay party at Rain. As soon as we got there we were lucky
enough to walk into the front room and hear François K immediately.
It was my first time seeing him play and he was amazing. He was
so focused, with his eyes closed andhis head swaying to the beat.
Every
time he would bring in a new song you could tell it was going to
be good, just by his expression. After his set, Danny Krivit came
on the decks. His style was straight up New York house and he played
a lot of classics. When he dropped Sneak's remix of Dajae's "All
Over My Face" the crowd went nuts. It was a great WMC moment,
seeing everyone in that room singing along with their hands in the
air.
I was going back and
forth between Danny Krivit blowing up the front room to Matthias
Heilbronn jacking the main room. The vibe at this party was phenomenal
and everyone
was getting down. Somehow I missed Shaun Escoffery's performance
in the main room, which bummed me out for five seconds until Roy
Davis Jr. took control. After missing him every year he was number
one on my list of "DJs I *must* see in
Miami". Needless to say I was extremely excited when he came
on. He didn't let me down, of course, and started banging the party.
He busted out with a phat song right away, which samples"If
you really like to rock the funky beats, someone in the house say
hell yeah". The crowd responded with a huge "HELL YEAH"
while Roy Davis Jr. kept right on moving them. He played a remix
of "All I Do" by Stevie Wonder and a remix of Marvin Gaye's
"Got to Give it Up". His set was remarkable and I was
so glad I didn't miss him again this year. The Chez Wave & Bombay
party was awesome and a beautiful greeting to the conference!
That night I was extremely
tired and almost ended up passing out in the hotel room. But thanks
to some Vodka and Red Bull, I headed out to Bash for the Sound of
Four Play Music party. Upon arrival, Glenn Underground (number two
on my must-see DJ list) was gracing the decks but surprisingly,
the crowd was not as big as I had expected. Glenn Underground was
going off anyway, despite the lack of people. Sadly I was too late
to hear DJ Heather but seeing GU made meforget all about it. I danced
in the main room for awhile and then I ventured to the back patio
where none other than Mr. Roy Davis Jr. was playing. I was so happy
to see him twice in one day and I immediately reserved a spot on
the dance floor.
I didn't think Roy Davis
Jr. could top what I experienced earlier at Rain, but somehow he
did. His set was beautiful and on a different level. Instead of
thumpin music with mainly disco samples, he gently
laid down more deep and soulful tracks, similar to the sound of
his own song "Gabriel". The back patio at Bash was the
perfect setting for this style of music. At one point while I was
dancing I remember looking up at the sky and having another one
of those "conference moments". There I was in Miami; dancing
to one of my favorite DJs of all time and noticing just how beautiful
the moon and stars were that night. Ahhh.....there is nothing like
being at the conference. After Roy Davis Jr. had finished his set,
everyone was ushered back inside the club where Glenn Underground
was still playing. He finished off the night perfectly and I stayed
until they turned on the lights and kicked everyone out. One day
down, four to go.
