WMC2003 Party Reviews
Wednesday
began with the Rest, Relax & Recover BBQ at the Fairwinds
hotel. I ended up running into afew of my friends from Orlando
and chilling with them for a bit.
The
All Good Funk Alliance was tearing it up, playing some phat
music. I wanted to bust a move but the dance floor was packed.
After several tracks and not being able to dance, I headed
back to the Riande Continental (where we were staying) forthe
Soul Food BBQ.
When
I got there DJ Spinna and his entourage brushed past me
in the lobby on their way out to the pool. Good timing!
Spinna took over just as the sun was setting. The Riande
'back yard' was a perfect place for
this
party
because of the big grassy area for people to dance and chill.
Suprisingly, Spinna was playing a house set and was rockin
it, of course. Everyone, myself included, flipped their
shoes off, dropped their bags and got down! With the warm
grass beneath my feet, the setting sun on the horizon, and
the salty ocean breeze nudging me, I was dancing in heaven.
What a wonderful party and an amazing feeling!
After
recovering for a bit, I went to Goddess for the Future party.
This was the best party of the conference last year, hands
down.
This
year it was almost the same lineup so I was expecting it
to be off the hook. And it was! When I got there Spinna
was just wrapping up his set. This time he wasn't playing
house, instead it was the sick broken beat, with the nu
jazz flavor for which the Future party is famous. I absolutely
adore this sound andI wish moreDJs were playing it. It is
wonderful to change music up now and again.
After Spinna was finished, Charlie Dark (a
member of Attica Blues) came on and was amazing. Right
away he played "Loose Lips" by Seiji feat. Lyrical
L and the crowd went crazy. Goddess was packed and everyone
was on the dance floor bopping together.I remember hearing
a remix
of
Bugz in the Attic's "Zombie" that I had not heard
before. Every so often Charlie Dark would stop therecord
and say something like "Okay, let's go" in his
British accent, and then play another killer track. The
crowd was dancing like crazy, loving every minute.
The star of the night was none other than
Jazzy Jeff who set the room on fire. Last year he was good;
this year he was mind-blowing. He played all the original
old hip-hop tracks we know and love, and haven't heard since
the days of Nintendo and Z Cavariccis. Everything from the
Pharcyde to KRS-One
to
Tribe Called Quest to De La Soul. He was mixing like a mad
man, letting only a few measures of the song play before
he dropped another classic. The crowd was going wild as
Jazzy Jeff showed us why he is a true master. He tore it
up beat juggling two copies of "Peter Piper" by
Run DMC. His set was absolutely, positively
off
the hook and I can not wait to see him again.
Jazzy Jeff is a tough act to follow, so the
next DJ had his work cut out for him. Luckily it was birthday
boy King Britt, who had no trouble easing into his set.
He brought it back to the broken beat sound and had the
crowd bouncing right along with him. I didn't recognize
most of the music he played, but that didn't keep me from
dancing the rest of the night away.
