Next Newsletter
Dear All,
Mull over your mulled wine and mince words with your mince pies and come up with some articles for the next newsletter, deadline next meeting on January 8th. They don't have to be long and they don't have to be serious.
Anyone got any ideas for a cheery midwinter festival that don't cost the earth, metaphorically or literally? Mine is to use what happens to be in the garden as decorations. Pyracantha berries are just as cheerful as holly [my holly doesn't seem to have berries] and the white flowers of Viburnum make an attractive contrast. There is always lots of ivy growing on the garden wall to decorate the bannisters and snowberries substitute for mistletoe [I'm not fussy what I kiss under!], while herbs give off a nice smell. But if you follow the Hull tradition of decorating on December 1st you'll need to refresh before Christmas Day.
I'll put your ideas in next autumn's newsletter.

Recycling Questionaire

1)
If we assume that those people who see the intrinsic benefit of recycling are already doing so, then we must target those who do not see that benefit and try to persuade them. However, their motivation will not be our motivation.
So if bins could be identifiable to a household, and their number is scanned at collection time, then a prize, or set of prizes could be used as a bribe for taking part. A sort of eco-lottery.
An alternative route is to use youngsters as a means of pressurising the adults in the household.
2)
Extend the range of materials recycleable by households to include electronic equipment, light bulbs, yoghurt pots.
Extend the brown bins to cover the city and double the number of collections.
Make it easier for Business community to re-cycle. Eg. One World Shop pays rates, and has to pay again to have packaging material taken away. At APD Communications where I used to work, waste electronic equipment was carted away, unsorted, in skips.
3)
Communication.
Use every channel available, radio, TV, newspapers, e-mails, workshops, bus posters, billboards.
How about a special Hull Inprint monthly on recycling. Or a Hull InPrint insert at least. Noting that stuff doesn’t get read properly, making it separate makes the point.
Where are the excellent cities, and how did they get there?
Cheers

Hull Green Fair Claims Special Dispensation
** Immediate Release **
Hull Green Fair Claims Special Dispensation from BUY NOTHING Day
CONSUMING LESS AND LIVING MORE!
This Saturday sees both International Buy Nothing Day and the bi-annual Hull Green Fair on Spring Bank (1).
Today, Hull Green Party spoke to head office about a special dispensation for Hull this Saturday.
Shan Oakes, Green Party candidate for the next Euro-elections says: "We claim a dispensation for Hull Green Fair for Buy Nothing Day. So many of our members already live by these precepts - and often have their own Buy Nothing Days as a protest against 'Shop-Til-We-Drop'.
"But we are convinced it is vital to offer alternatives for all our shopping. We just cannot consume more when the waste will suffocate our children or rising temperatures make life on planet Earth unbearable. Buy Nothing Day highlights the environmental and ethical consequences of consumerism (2) and asks everyone to give up buying for just 24 hours.
"But we say: make a start at Hull Green Fair - take a day off from the huge shopping centres and shop local at Spring Bank Community Centre. Our range of goods and campaigns won't cost the Earth! They are sustainable, or reused, or recycled. They are fair and just and don't exploit the people who made them. And there's lashings of tea and homemeade cakes too!
"We've been commended in Hull for green issues in recent weeks but we still have a long way to go! It's very simple to be Green, it doesn't need expert knowledge or complex skills. It means Consuming Less and Living More!"

Flood insurance
This is connected with the DEFRA approach to rising tides generally. They have instituted a series of shoreline management plans (SMP) which in fact are shoreline non-management plans, where the sea is to be left to do its worst, except in cases of economic importance

Flood insurance
I ask Hull FOE to consider the ramifications of the June 25th floods. The floods were due to Climate Change.
Recently, the Association of British Insurers stated that unless the Government takes serious steps to prevent future flooding, members of the ABI will be unable to re-insure properties in many cases. In the Hull Daily Mail last night, the Environment Agency made it clear that they are strapped for cash. They already have plans, (or is it non-plans?) to abandon areas here to the elements. How soon will Hull and Holderness become a deprived, Bangladesh-style area?
I know that my premiums will rocket when I renew my insurance in January. I do not complain on that score.
Much more serious is the issue of not being able to re-insure. Many people haven’t the money. I believe we are certain to get frequent floods in the future.
I ask the branch to take positive steps to draw the attention of politicians at all levels, to the threat that Hull and Holderness is to be abandoned, and to positively resist such moves.

Losing the trees will be worth it??
I think allowing car-parking on what has become a very crowded thoroughfare is ridiculous. Especially as there is access to the rear of these premises. It is precisely the decision to provide parking bays which has caused the trees to be sacrificed. Narrowing the road would slow the traffic but at peak times it would only result in more congestion and snarl-ups, as would any attempt to introduce traffic calming measures.
This situation demonstrates the need for a fully integrated public transport system and more park and ride schemes to reduce car use, plus much stiffer penalties for speeding. Also, as I think Steve has mentioned, more and better facilities for cycling and walking are needed. I find cycling on SBW is a nightmare now. That has to change.
I would like to join you on Saturday on the tour round the cemetery and the meeting afterwards. Where will you be starting off from? In the early 90s I lived on Princes Ave in a flat which overlooked the northeast corner of the cemetery. I thought the council had done a good job, making it a pleasant area to walk in with seating and picnic areas.

Losing the trees will be worth it??
My view on the road issue is that except for peak periods traffic is tempted to go too fast down this part of Spring Bank West, which is presumably why speed cameras have been found to be necessary. I'd have been happy with providing parking on one side and thereby narrowing the road and slowing the traffic. I can't see any point in speeding up the traffic along this stretch when it has to slow down for the lights at Princes ave and the level crossing at Walton Street anyway.
On Saturday 17th November at 10am I am taking a guided tour round the General Cemetery on Spring Bank West, at the behest of Cllr Robinson. Anyone who is interested is welcome to join us and the plan is to finish up at Hymers College for a discussion of what should be done to the cemetery. The assumption appears to be that it has become overgrown to the point where some clearance of vegetation is needed. Also some monuments are unsafe or damaged. Cllr R wants to get some sort of consensus, I think, on what works should be done.
One of the Tree Officers will also be present. Inevitably the question of the tree felling and road works will come up, though hopefully not dominate the proceedings.
When the City Council took over the cemetery from its bankrupt owners 30 years ago it was very overgrown. The proposals to 'tidy it up' generated great controversy at the time, including letters from John Betjeman and Philip Larkin. I didn't think the end result was too bad, though its true a lot of memorials were removed. The area is now a Conservation Area and removal of monuments would need Conservation Area Consent. Removal of trees in the cemetery would also need consent. [The trees with red dots on are proposed for pruning rather than felling]. I also think there is a better understanding now of the need to manage areas for wildlife.

FOE - HULL SIERRA LEONE

Dear Olatunde,
Many thanks for your reply. You are right about sharing activities and it would be really nice to think of you sharing our Green Fair.
We are putting up a display about our activities so we will include our links with Sierra Leone. Then when the Fair is over and we can all do other things, we will search in earnest for people who might know about sources of books, bicycles and computers.
Shan and Lee-Ann have been doing some really good work talking to pupils in primary schools about what it means to be a Friend of the Earth. The children are very well informed about the environment and how we can look after our planet, and will be putting on a display of their work at our Fair. This area of Hull has people from many different nationalities, and one of the schools had 14 different languages spoken by the children. Reaching older children may be more difficult but you are right that it is important to involve young people. Your idea about skill sharing looks worth following up.
Again we are doing remarkably similar activities; we have just had a talk yesterday from our Council's Waste Manager on various new collection schemes and plans to improve recycling rates. We would be very interested in hearing about your ideas for sustainable waste management.
I'll pass this on and see if there are others who can pass on their news and thoughts to you. Very best wishes with all your activities.

FOE - HULL SIERRA LEONE

Dear Hilary and All,
Thank you for your very useful email.First of all if I had know before now 24th November which is Hull FOE Green Fair would be celebrated by FOESL aloso here in Sierra Leone. It would be nice for both groups to take events together. This would let the world know that there is unity amongs civil society.May Carole soul rest in peace.
I am looking towards a North-South partnership between our groups.A partnership whereby Youths from HULL can come to FOESL and work with us in skills sharing. We can provide accommodation etc.As you know FOESL has taken the challenge for change. Here in Sierra Leone we need to engage the youths as they are the man power of the society. Therefore to protect our environment the youths must be empowered in training and other useful activities. This is why we need some used equipment to support our aims and objectives. It will be good for us if you can find organisation out there who can send some of these stuffs for our Eco-centre.For your information we are holding a two days workshop on Sustainable Waste Management,11th and 12th December 2007.This is because the city of Freetown has serious waste management problem which we believe there is a solution. There are ongoing meetings toward this event. This workshop will enable us to address other issues : Organic Agriculture,Health and Sanitation,Renewable Energy,Forest Conservation and Gender and Children.
More information will reach from now on.
We thank you all and look forward to more cooperation.

GreenHere
Way back in July, I went to a meeting about the setting up of a new project to do with environmental issues etc. Another member of FoE was also there.
Since then I've been trying to help with the thinking ans set up. It's been very woolly and a bit difficult to see if it will work.
However the current situation is as follows:
"GreenHere is a Hull and East Riding based new project to create a network involved with environmental, ecological issues etc. The aim is for it to be a network - on the lines of the Make Poverty History network - rather than an organisation.
It is to be launched on Wednesday 24th October - United Nations Day - by the Lord Mayor of Hull and, hopefully, the Chairman of ERYC at Hull's new interchange. Prior to that - on Tuesday 23rd - an open topped bus will take members of the media to visit several 'green' projects and find out more about others en route.
If you have any material that can be e-mailed prior to that date please send it along. There will be display stands on Paragon Station on the Wednesday if you would like to add material there.
If you already know all of this, please forgive me. We are networking as opposed to sitting in a committee."
I don't know if FoE have been informed of all this so I thought I'd better up date you since it was through you that I discovered the group. All arrangement are still fluid and very last minute - that's how woolly it has been!
Best wishes

UKWIN National meeting 17th November London
National Meeting of the UK Without Incineration Network
Saturday, 17th November 2007, 10.30 to 16.00
To discuss the way forward and the way to be of most use to members, along with various current local issues. We need you to contribute to what could be a very valuable resource for the campaign against incineration
To be held at National Council for Voluntary Organisations, Regents Wharf, 8 All Saints Street, London N1 9RL
Cost: Minimum donation £10 - Recommended donation £15
Dear Members and Colleagues,
We are inviting you to a national meeting of UK WIN (UK Without Incineration Network) on Saturday 17th November.
This is an important meeting. UK WIN was formed in April of this year with the task of assembling information and resources to enable groups and individuals to contest and campaign against incineration. Since then we have secured members and endeavoured to secure funding to enable us to build a website and employ a co-ordinator. The aim has been to make this resource available widely, free of charge.
Unfortunately we have so far not managed to secure the funding (£15,000) upon which our plans have been founded and, at the present time, these promises of financial support have not materialised. As a result the Steering Committee believe it is vital to consult with you on the way forward, and to work out with you a practical way in which we can deliver UK WIN’s aims.
This is why we have convened this national meeting on Saturday 17th November in at the NCVO in London and, on behalf of your Steering Committee, I would like to urge you strongly to attend.
We are structuring the meeting so that you can explore with us the reality which we face, and to share the task of finding the solutions to the problems we confront. We also intend to provide you with an opportunity to be involved in the design of the UK WIN website and, if possible, to include one or two speakers with inspirational solutions or experience.
I would ask that you reply to this invitation by Saturday 3rd November so that we can plan ahead (although late replies will, of course, still be valid). You will find a reply form attached to this invitation.
We have also attached a copy of the UK WIN constitution, as some members and colleagues may not be familiar with this and it may be necessary to refer to our constitution during the national meeting.
We will be providing a lunch and refreshments. As our funds are very limited at present, we must ask you to make a contribution to the meeting’s costs. We are mindful that your own resources are limited too. We would ask that you make a minimum contribution of £10 (cheque payable to UK WIN and to be enclosed with your reply form) and, if possible, that you actually make a contribution of £15.
If you have any queries, and if you have any subject that you would greatly like to see on the meeting’s agenda, please do get in touch with me (stephen.marinet@btinternet.com, tel. 01249 653972).
Sincere regards,
Stephen Eades

STW will march despite government ban

STOP THE WAR COALITION
Email office@stopwar.org.uk
1) WE WILL DEFY GOVERNMENT BAN ON ANTI-WAR MARCH. JOIN THE DEMONSTRATION. SPREAD THE WORD
Stop the War President Tony Benn has delivered a letter to the Home Secretary Jacqui Smith to make clear why our Troops Out demonstration at Parliament on Monday 8 October will take place, despite the ban by the government and police. It is essential that the voice of the antiwar majority in this country is present at Parliament when Gordon Brown makes his long awaited statement on Iraq.
That is why we are asking every anti war activist to sign the letter protesting against the ban, to join the demonstration on October 8 and to do everything possible to publicise the protest. (Sign here: http://www.stopwar.org.uk/)
Stop the War has designated tomorrow, Wednesday 3 October, as a day of action to build support for the demonstration and to create a mass sign-in campaign, using a special NOT ONE MORE DEATH postcard, designed by eminent artist David Gentleman. The postcard calls for troops out now and for the British government to break with US war policies.
(See postcard here:http://www.stopwar.org.uk/ )
It is our basic right to demonstrate. As Tony Benn says, "The authority for this march derives from our ancient right to free speech and assembly enshrined in our history, of which we often boast." This is why Tony will be joined on our march by Labour Party NEC member Walter Wolfgang, musician Brian Eno and many
more soon to be announced.
Comedian and broadcaster Mark Thomas, announcing his participation, said, "This is a ham-fisted attempt to prevent us from demonstrating. We will ignore the ban. We have the moral and logical high-ground. I will be marching on Monday 8 October."
Stop the War has been inundated by phone calls and emails from across the country, expressing outrage at this attack on our right to protest peacefully, many saying they will be travelling to London to join the demonstration, both to insist that all British troops are withdrawn from Iraq and to defend our civil liberties.
The situation in Iraq is worsening by the day, with hundreds being killed each week and the virtual collapse of most public services. The cause of this horrific suffering is George Bush's occupation and British troops are only in Iraq to give him political cover. Every day the troops remain prolongs the death and destruction for the Iraqi people.
Our demonstration will call for the immediate withdrawal of British troops from Iraq. We will also call for all troops to be withdrawn from Afghanistan, for an end to the British government's subservience to US foreign policy and for Gordon Brown to oppose George Bush's current threats to attack Iran.
We urge everyone who has opposed our government's war policies and who has been appalled by the repeated attacks on our basic rights to join our demonstration.
DEMONSTRATE: PARLIAMENT MONDAY 8 OCTOBER
NOT ONE MORE DEATH - BRING ALL THE TROOPS HOME NOW

Speakers include:
TONY BENN
MARK STEEL, comedian and writer
BEN GRIFFIN, ex-soldier who served in Iraq

Burma: A Global Roar

Dear friends,
Burma's generals have brought their brutal iron hand down on peaceful monks and protesters -- but in response, a massive global outcry is gathering pace. The roar of global public opinion is being heard in hundreds of protests outside Chinese and Burmese embassies, people round the world wearing the monks' color red, and on the internet-- where our petition has exploded to over 200,000 signers in just 72 hours.
People power can win this. Burma's powerful sponsor China can halt the crackdown, if it believes that its international reputation and the 2008 Olympics in Beijing depend on it. To convince the Chinese government and other key countries, Avaaz is launching a major global and Asian ad campaign on Wednesday, including full page ads in the Financial Times and other newspapers, that will deliver our message and the number of signers. We need 1 million voices to be the global roar that will get China's attention. If every one of us forwards this email to just 20 friends, we'll reach our target in the next 72 hours. Please sign the petition at the link below -if you haven't already- and forward this email to everyone you care about:
http://www.avaaz.org/en/stand_with_burma/t.php
The pressure is working - already, there are signs of splits in the Burmese Army, as some soldiers refuse to attack their own people. The brutal top General, Than Shwe, has reportedly moved his family out of the country – he must fear his rule may crumble.
The Burmese people are showing incredible courage in the face of horror. We're broadcasting updates on our effort over the radio into Burma itself – telling the people that growing numbers of us stand with them. Let's do everything we can to help them – we have hours, not days, to do it. Please sign the petition and forward this email to at least 20 friends right now. Scroll down our petition page for details of times and events to join in the massive wave of demonstrations happening around the world at Burmese and Chinese embassies.
With hope and determination,

Bio-fuels petition - FOR ACTION
Government bio-fuel policy boosts CO2 emissions and is a disaster for bio-diversity and world food supplies
If you care about these things, please sign this petition
http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Biofuel-caution/
Then FORWARD an e-mail to everyone in your address book, to help the petition reach a tipping point.
By sending an e-mail circulating this info on you can also earn the chance of a small PRIZE.
(Read on to learn how).
What is the problem with bio-fuels?
Some types of bio-fuel, such as those produced from waste, probably have an important role to play, in helping to combat climate change, but environmentalists are becoming increasingly concerned that current UK , EU and US policies are promoting a boom in the production of bio-fuels from sources that are unsustainable. This boom is mainly being driven by the introduction of targets, such as the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation, in the UK , which is due to start in April 2008.
These targets are being introduced without any concern for how the bio-fuels to meet them will be produced. They are already leading to soaring world food prices and a big acceleration in the rate at which tropical forests; wetlands and natural grasslands are being destroyed.
Indonesia is being particularly badly affected and the UN predicts that orang-utans could be driven to extinction within just 5 years, unless policies change quickly.
Far from reducing CO2 emissions; this bio-fuel boom is driving them up, because of the CO2 released when forests are cleared; wetlands drained and grasslands ploughed up.
As well as the environmental impacts, there are also more direct human impacts from the boom being encouraged by current policies. There is simply not enough land available to grow both the food we need and to grow bio-fuel crops. This is already leading to soaring world food prices and will ultimately threaten millions with starvation. In addition there are major human rights issues, with many small farmers having their land seized to make way for bio-fuel plantations, with those who resist often being killed.
Finally, by allowing the demand for bio-fuels that they create to be met from unsustainable sources, current policies risk inhibiting the development of technologies to produce fuels from more sustainable sources and are being used to avoid taking action to reduce the demand for fuel, from whatever source.
At lot more information, on the effects of current policies, can be found by clicking on the links, at the end of this e-mail.
Two things you can do – sign the petition and send it on
Because of the rate at which this bio-fuel boom is taking off, it has become one of the most immediate and urgent environmental issues that we face. Fortunately, because this is quite a discrete area of policy, there is the possibility that enough public pressure will be able to force a change of direction.
As part of a campaign, to try to mobilize this pressure, a petition has been posted on the Government’s e-petition web site; however, to have an impact, it will need tens of thousands of signatures. I am sure that there are more than enough people who will be prepared to sign it, if they hear about it, but those of us who are not rich media barons cannot easily reach that number of people, directly. As a way around this, I am asking everyone who receives this e-mail to not only sign the petition, but also to forward the e-mail, to as many other individuals and groups as they can. If enough people send it on, then a tipping point will be crossed and the number of people that it reaches will start to increase exponentially. If you send on the petition, as well as signing it, you will not only be helping create pressure for a change of policy, you will also be taking part in an experiment, to see if it possible to reach a mass audience, without massive financial resources, by using an e-mail cascade.
As a thank you, to those who do forward this e-mail, I am offering two £15 book tokens, as prizes that you may win for sending it on.
The way the prizes will work is that one prize will go to the first person to forward the e-mail to someone, who I have already chosen and whose identity only they and I know. I am also offering a £15 book token to the person who forwards the e-mail to the first prize -winner.
To avoid misleading anyone, I must make it clear that I cannot predict how long it will take for the prize to be won (if it is), so it is possible that it may already been won when you get this e-mail; however, I hope that most people will want to send it on, even if the prizes have already gone. I must also make clear that the prizes are not conditional on signing the petition, although, again, I hope most people will want to.
Want to do more?
If you want to do more you might also like to e-mail your MP, urging them to sign EDM 1494:

UK ministers to use climate change to back GM crops
Dear Friends,
Prime Minister: anti GM petition
http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/gmfreeuk/
Jeffrey M Smith - what is GM really about - lecture. (hear this if ANY
of
the pro-GM arguments seem sensible!!)

Climate concerns will reduce chance of new public backlash, says
industry
Alok Jha, science correspondent, The Guardian , Monday September
17
2007
Government ministers have given their backing to a renewed campaign by
farmers and industry to introduce genetically modified crops to the UK,
the
Guardian has learned. They believe the public will now accept that the
technology is vital to the development of higher-yield and hardier food
for
the world's increasing population and will help produce crops that can
be
used as biofuels in the fight against climate change.
"GM will come back to the UK; the question is how it comes back, not
whether
it's coming back," said a senior government source.
Attempts to introduce GM to Britain in the late 1990s met a wave of
direct
action from activists tearing up crops. At the same time supermarkets
such
as Sainsbury's and Marks & Spencer barred GM ingredients from their
ranges
for fear of provoking a consumer backlash. In 2004, the government
announced
that no GM crops would be grown in the country for the "foreseeable
future",
prompting Lord Peter Melchett, policy director of the Soil Association
to
declare: "This is the end of GM in Britain."
Recent polls also revealed that about 70% of the European public
remained
opposed to GM foods.
However, ministers are confident that the technology's virtues will be
more
apparent this time because of increased public awareness of pressing
environmental concerns. "The ability to have drought-resistant crops is
important not only for the UK but for other parts of the world," said
the
source. "And the fact that some GM crops can produce higher yields in
more
difficult climactic conditions is going to be important if we're going
to
feed the growing world population."
Ministers are reluctant to publicly back the effort at this stage,
admitting
that a previous attempt to introduce GM crops to the UK in 2004 fell
victim
to poor public relations. "We had a bad consultation on GM and it set
research back in the UK a very long way indeed," the source added.
In that year, scientists published the results of several field scale
trials
of GM crops, which assessed their impact on the environment. Although
the
technology was subsequently cleared by the government, biotech
companies in
the UK decided to lie low after backlashes from the media, NGOs and
consumers.
But industry attempts to reverse the situation are now gathering
momentum.
Earlier this year, the plant science company BASF began field trials in
Cambridge and Yorkshire of a potato that has been genetically modified
to
resist blight, the fungus that devastated Ireland's potato crop and
caused
the famine of the 1840s. A successful result could lead to the potato
being
the first in a line of GM crops grown in the UK.
"We have absolutely every confidence that GM will be used in the UK,"
said
Julian Little, chairman of the Agricultural Biotechnology Council,
which
represents several major biotechnology companies that produce GM crops.
"It's worth remembering that there are approximately 100m hectares
(247m
acres) of GM crops being grown around the world by about 10 million
farmers.
There is absolutely no question at all that this is technology that is
being
seen to work in other countries and why on earth would you not want to
be
interested in the UK?"
Farmers have been lobbying ministers over a way to bring back GM
technology.
Peter Kendall, the president of the National Farmers Union (NFU), has
written to ministers asking them to have a national debate to highlight
the
benefits.
Helen Ferrier, chief scientist at the NFU, said: "We have written to
ministers on various topics related to GM - including the more general
issues of we've got to look at this more sensibly and try and have a
conversation about it based on what's happening and not on emotions and
what
happened five years ago."
Environment groups accused the government yesterday of putting industry
wishes above the concerns of the public. "Unfortunately the public and
media
have thought we've won the battle and GM's gone away and people aren't
really worrying about it at the moment. It certainly hasn't gone away,"
said
Clare Oxborrow, a GM campaigner at Friends of the Earth.
Graham Thompson, of Greenpeace UK, said the government still saw GM as
a
public relations issue. "The population has comprehensively rejected GM
in
the UK and over most of Europe so they're constantly having to be as
bullish
as possible. The purpose of the crops primarily is to give intellectual
property rights to biotech companies. They're fulfilling their purpose
perfectly in those terms. But they're not really doing much for the
farmer."
But Mr Little said environment campaigners had misled the public into
fearing GM. "All of the suggestions that they've made about the
horrible
things that could happen, nothing's happened."
He pointed to Australia as a place where public opinion on GM
technology was
turned around. "There's a country that has gone through the
moratoriums, has
gone through the we're-not-sure, the NGOs have been in there and caused
mayhem, and come out the other end saying this is a useful technology
and
the public support it."
"There is no question in our minds that we'll win," said Mr Little.
"This is a safe, high-quality technology that's been proven to work."
Cheers,
Martin Deane

Huge armaments giant, Lockheed Martin, is one of two top bidders for the UK census in 2011 (the other is German telecoms T-systems).
LM is a top surveillance and intelligence company too. Contact your MP to ask questions about this. See censusalert for more.
"Drum them out!" Bring your drums. Menwith Hill, Oct 13
Menwith Hill and Fylingdales bases are to become part of the American Missile Defense system, "Star Wars". This was Gordon Brown's quick announcement before the holidays. AMD will see American missiles in Poland and Czech, escalating relationships with Russia and puts UK bases on the front line.

Saltend incinerator meeting postponed
Saltend Incinerator Storage Plans
Sept 5th, 3.30pm in the Guildhall, Hull Council Planning Committee is to approve a modification to Condition 18 of planning approval, Saltend incinerator.
Condition 18 was meant to stop WRG storing/processing hazardous materials on-site. Suddenly, WRG realises that as it stands, it stops them operating the incinerator, because as soon as they produce any fly ash, they will contravene that condition because they will be storing/processing hazardous material. WRG wish to modify Condition 18 to allow temporary storage of hazardous by-products of incineration on-site. What they don't make clear is that they will produce 12,000, yes 12,000 tons of fly ash per year. Fly ash is classified as hazardous waste. It contains large amounts of lime. Health and safety documents indicate that lime is extremely dangerous to the eyesa and could easily blinds you. Also, it is an irritant to the skin. Although WRG claim that the fine ash will be transferred in sealed transporters on site, and will be stored in sealed silos and will go off-site in sealed wagons, it represents an accident just waiting to happen.
For instance, there was an explosion at Kirklees incinerator which was hushed up. It cost £1 million to repair. There have been fires at Crymlyn Burrows and Dundee incinerators which put them out of action for a long time. There was recently a fire at a hazardous waste plant in/near Preston Lancashire. Thick, poisonous fumes, traffic held up on motorway, residents evacuated. Some time ago a lorry caught fire on the M62.
There is to be a recyclables handling facility next door to the incinerator. Tons of paper, plastic, wood, jus waiting foray vandal/accident to set it on fire and trash the incinerator silos. Recently there was a fire in a timber store nearby . One could see smoke and fumes for days from here at Bilton. That was100 tons of timber only.
Please speak at the meeting(I can tell you how to register). It will help to get to the meeting early. A group of us is organising ourselves to present one proper, complete argument. Do you want to join us? Do you want any more info? There's a slim chance, a real chance, a last chance to win.

Anti-incinerator help
I’ve shown that if you have the belief that you can stop the unstoppable, even if only for the time it takes to blink, you will. I’ve delayed Saltend for five weeks.
The Saltend incinerator will never be built.
There’s too much going against it.
I need a very few members with that belief, to work with me as much or as little as they are able, for the next five weeks.
Any offers?

Hull Stop the War newsletter
Dear Friends,
the Hull Stop the War newsletter is out now. Let me know if you would like a paper copy.
There is a large amount on the war and peace front, as you will be aware.
Stories of covert attacks on Iran have been feeding through for over two years now and it may be that a move against Iran will be made soon.
This article by former high Treasury official Paul Craig Roberts lays it out.
There is not even a sniff from our goverment of any such in the offing, although we can bet that Gordon Brown will go along with it - and with the endless blamings of Iran for arming in Iraq or for building IEDs or for killing Americans that Washington dishes out regularly, similar to the build up to the completely fraudulent war on Iraq.
One useful blogger has given a day - Labor Day, Sept. 3rd for kickoff to war to build towards Sept 11th (where have I heard that date before? Oh yes, Chile 1973).
He says to rattle the cages and get the word out that a war will be concocted.
I'm sure we won't need any prompting.

Martin Deane

Letter to Cllr Fareham from HOTI about the proposed incinerator at Saltend
Dear Councillor Fareham,
You do not need to review the basic decision just simply refuse to
allow the variation to clause 18 which was included in the original
permission specifically by your committee, for very sound reasons,
and
was accepted by WRG.
Fly ash is an appalling cocktail of tiny toxic particulates which
cause all sorts of dreadful afflictions especially to the unborn, young
children, the weak and the old.
This is unassailably true and more and more of the population now
realize that this is the case and can see the obvious hazards of
storing, handling and transporting this material in and through a
densely populated area as well as allowing the toxic emissions to
settle
downwind over a predominantly food producing area on a 24/365 basis.
By permitting the construction of the incinerator at Saltend you will
be
complicit in the deaths of people you were elected to protect.
It is time that you and your colleagues stood up and were counted
rather
than cowering behind weak excuses and blaming the national government
for your pathetic and shameful performance over this application
which must be refused.
Finally may I say that you may find this "irrelevant" information
"interesting" but I and many others regard the matter as being one of
"life or death" from which you can no longer abdicate your
responsibility.

WRATE BRIEFING
The Environment Agency has recently released WRATE, a computer

management options.
We are expecting that many councils will soon start using WRATE, and

Press Satement
JOINT STATEMENT FOR PRESS FROM FRIENDS OF THE EARTH AND BSKYB
“SKY’S CHARITY SEARCH”
Sky’s search for a new three year charity partner has brought in entries from arts, education and environmental charities. In a completely open application process, over 160 organisations have applied. However, Friends of the Earth has decided to withdraw its application from Sky’s charity partner search. Sky has commented that whilst it understood the decision, they were disappointed as the Friends of the Earth application is a “highly creative, inspiring campaign idea exactly reflecting our own ambitions to address the pressing climate change challenge”.
Friends of the Earth considered that it had “a duty to explore the opportunity to work in partnership with Sky given the potential benefits of reaching millions of people on how they can take political and practical action on the pressing issue of climate change.” Friends of the Earth felt it would be difficult to match Sky’s timing with its own participative five year strategic planning processes, along with internal discussions which are now under way.
However, Friends of the Earth is keeping an open dialogue with Sky who publicly support its ground breaking climate campaign, The Big Ask, which is calling for a strong climate change bill to deliver year on year cuts in greenhouse gases and provide businesses with the certainty they need to invest in low carbon technologies. Both organisations agree there is no time to waste and remain committed to ensuring that each can take action and achieve victories to tackle the urgent challenge of climate change.
Friends of the Earth gets over 95 per cent of its income from individuals. In the past it has only rarely formed financial and campaigning partnerships with business. It is actively re-evaluating this position together with stakeholders. This is because a number of businesses are, Friends of the Earth believes, making genuine attempts to make their operations environmentally sustainable and to engage their consumer bases and it believes Sky is a good example of this.
The process of short listing five organisations in Sky’s charity search is underway and an overall winner will be announced in December.

Peace Interview
A Friendly Interview!
I'd just like to thank KCFM - our new local radio station - for such a friendly interview this morning!
We talked about the vigil coming up on Sunday (12.30 Queens Gardens, Hull College end).
- the Hiroshima Vigil which the Quakers run each year to remember the dead of the first time nuclear weapons were used in warfare.
Coming home it struck me that, having done this for years, peace issues seem to be hard work in Hull and area. Sure we have our own concerns, like the flooding a few weeks ago, or how the kids are doing, whether we have a job, who's split up, who's on drugs, and so on but...
Peace is not optional!
Peace is not something we can afford to take for granted!
Peace HAS to be worked for because if we don't work for it we will lose it!
Because there are very powerful people who are working for war as we have seen in recent years and may see soon with attacks on Iran and Syria and Lebanon again. But without peace we have no society worth having. Even though it may not feel like we are at war - even if we ignore the news bulletins - everything becomes compromised. Peace is the sine qua non ("without which nothing!").
If they - WHOEVER they may be - can get us to fight their wars then it is easy for them to get us to accept fingerprinting in schools (2)
- or ID cards for everyone - which Brown still pursues pretending most people want them
- or DNA records on everyone
- or anti-terror searches before using buses or trains
- or the tracking of every car across Britain
- or retina scans entering other countries
- or pounding on about 9/11 when everyone knows it was a lie
- or their next set of lies about Iran while America contniues to arm everyone
and on and on.
And they have got us to fight their wars. We have destroyed Afghanistan and destroyed Iraq. We will have to pull out of each country before long. Meanwhile personnel will kill and die. And unless we take an interest across Hull society they will get us to fight and die and kill again - based on lies, deceit and propaganda.
I look forward to my interview on Sunday morning with Auntie!

Hull Hiroshima Vigil - Sunday, Peace Garden
1) Hull Hiroshima Vigil - Sunday 4th August, 12.30pm
A vigil to remember the 200,000 dead from the atomic bombs dropped by America on Japan at the end of the Second World War.
To be held this Sunday in the Peace Garden, Queen's Gardens, Central Hull.
On the 6th August one bomb was dropped on Hiroshima.
On the 9th August one bomb was dropped on Nagasaki.
70,000 died instantly at Hiroshima; by a few months the total was about 140,000.
70,000 died instantly at Nagasaki; a toll of 80,000 dead by a few months.
These two cities were chosen, not for military reasons, but because other major Japanese cities were already destroyed by conventional saturation bombing. (Kyoto was spared by Sec. Stimson for cultural reasons).
It is often said that the nuclear attacks ended the Second World War, but leading generals argued otherwise saying Japan was close to surrender anyway.
Today there are more nuclear states than ever and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, from 1968, is rapidly becoming a joke.
2) Newsletter - Please send in any contribution you would like to make - comment on the world, a poem, a quote. Deadline - TUESDAY. To me by email or to 106 Belvoir Street, Hull , HU5 3LR.

Korean Hostages
Dear friends,
23 South Korean aid workers, most of them young women, have just
been taken hostage by Taliban fighters in Afghanistan, who are
threatening to execute them this week. Not only are these aid
workers' lives at stake, but their execution could trigger a mass
evacuation of life-giving humanitarian aid from all of Afghanistan.
The situation is desperate, but there is hope. The Taliban are all
from the 'Pashtun' ethnic group, and observe a strict code called
Pashtunwali â€" the "way of the Pashtuns". This code demands, above
all else: "hospitality to all, especially guests and strangers".
There are rumours of infighting among the Taliban over these
kidnappings, because they clearly violate the code.
A global outcry for the Taliban to follow their own code would
certainly be covered by media in Afghanistan and Pakistan where the
Taliban are based â€" creating more local pressure on them to free
their prisoners. But these hostages are living under a 24 hour death
sentence. We have seconds not minutes to act. Sign the petition
below, forward this email, and let's report a truly powerful outcry
to local journalists:
http://www.avaaz.org/en/honour_the_afghan_code
Pashtunwali has real power among ordinary people in Afghanistan. In
2003 Bettina Goislard, 29, was shot by Taliban gunmen while she was
working for the UN High Commission for Refugees in the town of
Ghazni, near where the Korean aid workers were kidnapped. Incensed
by her murder, local people chased down the gunmen and beat them
before handing them over to the police -- then they gathered up her
body and marched several hundred miles to Kabul to show their sorrow
to the world.
Recently, global pressure helped free BBC reporter Alan Johnston
from his captivity in Gaza. It can be amazing what happens when we
speak together around the world. So let's try our best, for these 23
young people and their families, and the millions of Afghans who
need their aid -- With hope,
Ricken, Iain, Graziela, Tom, Paul and the rest of the Avaaz Team

2) Independence Day, Menwith Hill - report
There were some developments of concern as the police served everyone, for the first time, with Section 12 notices (Public Order Act). They also denied protesters access to the A59 so it was impossible to walk the perimeter of the base as in previous years. Two people were arrested for non-compliance.
3) Videos - Ive put a selection of videos on worthwhile subjects here.
4) SiCKO - Michael Moore's latest film on the US (and UK, France, Canada, and Cuba) healthcare sytems is up here, for now.

WASTE NEWS
INTERNAL
ENVIRONMENT MINISTERS WATER DOWN EU POLICY
At Environment Council vote on the Waste Framework Directive on 28th
June,
Environment Ministers disappointingly failed to reject the proposal
to
promote incineration by redefining it from 'disposal' to 'recovery',

didn't even attempt to reach agreement on recycling and prevention
targets.
However Ministers did vote for a 5-step waste hierarchy, which
prioritises
prevention, reuse and recycling ahead of energy recovery and
landfill.

We will continue lobbying along with other NGOs across Europe to
achieve
the best outcome for the Directive. The second reading will start in
November, with another vote by the Environment Committee in December
and
then a plenary vote by the full Parliament early next year. The
process
will finish in mid 2008 when Council finalise their second reading
position, after which all 27 EU Member States will have to
incorporate it

LOCAL GROUPS CONFERENCE
This year's Local Groups' Conference will focus on why it's an
exciting
time to be part of Friends of the Earth. We're in a "now or never"
era and
we want to rise to the challenge. Against a background of urgent
global
environmental threats, unprecedented opportunities for change exist -
biodiversity and climate change are top of the international agenda,
public interest is high, and big changes are happening in UK politics
and
overseas.
We want to catch hold of these opportunities and Conference 2007 is
the
time when we can work out together what needs doing to secure the
future
of the planet. We want to share ideas and give you the tools to meet
that
challenge.
Conference 2007 takes place at the University of Reading between 7th
and
9th September and bookings can be made online at
http://community.foe.co.uk/conference. An "early bird" discount
applies
for those booking before the deadline of 17 August. Late bookings
will be
subject to an additional fee.
CLOTH BAGS AVAILABLE ONLINE
New cloth bags are now available from Friends of the Earth's online
Shop
at
Local groups can order the new cloth bags through our shop for £1.50
instead of the normal price of £2.50. To purchase bags at this
special
price please contact Steve Cain on stevenc@foe.co.uk or call 01582
438 103.
JOBS AND THE ENVIRONMENT
"But it'll create jobs" is the one of the main argument groups come
up
against in campaigns against dodgy waste facilities, roads and
supermarkets. To tackle this, it's good to point out that green
alternatives such as recycling usually create more jobs. There is now
a
searchable online tool where you can find examples of job benefits
from
green schemes, or examples where jobs claims for destructive
developments
were exaggerated - see
http://community.foe.co.uk/jobs
If you have any good examples from your campaigns, please email them
to
Jane Hutchings at janeh@foe.co.uk.

Northern Network News
Dear Friends of the Earth,
The Big Ask in the Autumn – Local Groups are doing some fantastic work over the summer getting out and about at as many events as possible (complete with wellies and umbrellas) to get postcards signed and continue to get people involved on The Big Ask. At the same time the office here is unbelievably busy with new volunteers beetling away to pave the way for a massive push in the autumn. Autumn 2007 will be the crunch time for the Climate Bill, as the Bill will start progressing through the House of Commons and the details will be fought over – probably starting in October or November. That means that we need to ensure that as many MPs as possible are under heavy pressure to lobby for the changes that we want to see in the Bill – especially the 3 key points (annual targets, including aviation and shipping emissions, and strengthening the long term target to at least 80% reduction in carbon dioxide)
So, a detailed paper mailing will be going out to all groups in the next few weeks with more information to enable groups to ramp up the pressure on MPs – through the ongoing activities of engaging other community groups in the Big Ask, organising showings of an Inconvenient Truth with a Q&A session with your MP afterwards, doing local media work on your MPs position on the Bill and so on.
If you are able to let me know what you are doing I will publicise your events and campaigns, and sing your praises to other groups through this newsletter. Please send any information to me (nicki.smith@foe.co.uk) or to Neil (neil.kingsnorth@foe.co.uk)

**ACTION STATIONS **
* Calling waste campaigners and recyclers! North West Waste Forum is to hold a meeting at Manchester Town Hall on Tuesday 24 July 5-8pm, with invited speakers (from 5.30) including Garrett Reynolds, FoE Resource-use campaigner, and Cllr Neil Swannick, chair of Greater Manchester WDA. For an update on the region’s waste policies, and a chance to see some friendly faces, come along! To confirm attendance, ring Frank K on 0151 707 4328.
* Meet an MEP - a meeting has been arranged with Linda McAvan MEP on Tuesday 24th July in York to talk to her about waste and recycling issues. If any member of a local group and waste campaigners in the region would be like to come along to talk to her to try to influence waste and recycling policies across Europe , please contact Guy Wallbanks (York & Ryedale FoE) on guy.wallbanks@thomson.com
* Comment on new wind development - EnergieKontor UK Ltd are proposing a development of up to 24 wind turbines, max height 130m, to generate up to 50MW, at Halingden Moor in East Lancs. It's in early stages, and many studies have to be undertaken. For details and a chance to comment, go to: www.energiekontor.co.uk and look in the Projects section. Or ring Judith Cornfield on 01423 799042 for an information sheet.
* FoE shop – Checkout the latest addition to the shop, Shop News. First edition can be found at
www.foe.co.uk/resource/newsletters/shop_news/ latest.html
The main feature is an online survey to get feedback on their A5 booklets. If you haven't already done so, sign up yourself!
* Protect your local area - The Government wants to introduce changes that will restrict you from having a say in what happens in your community. This will make it easier for nuclear power stations, major roads, airport runways, out of town supermarkets and incinerators to be built where you live. If unchallenged, the Government will be able to force these developments through and there will be little you can do about it. Friends of the Earth's Waste, Food and Planning networks have been invited to take this action *in addition* to their campaign plans round The Big Ask. If your group would like to be active in this area, please see if you have the capacity to do both campaigns, or else network with coalition partners in your area. Find out who is in the coalition by going to http://www.planningdisaster.co.uk
For info contact Richard.Hines@foe.co.uk or 0113 242 8153. To send an email to the planning white paper team go to
www.foe.co.uk/resource/local/planning/
press_for_change/planning_white_paper/index.html
* Petition against offshore aggregate dredging - Marinet, the marine network of Friends of the Earth, have created a petition at petitions.pm.gov.uk/MarineDredging/ calling for the curtailment of offshore aggregate dredging. Deadline 31st August. More information on Marinet at
www.marinet.org.uk/
** Hull group will be taking part in the Hull Green Mela on July 21st. Group members will act as "recycling advisors" for people attending the Mela. They will be working with a number of Business in the Community volunteers in July who wish to participate in the ongoing CARGO green waste recycling project. The group is looking forward to extra help and support the volunteers will bring to the project.

Green Fair
Dear All,
Well, how do you think it went?
All the feedback I got from stallholders was very positive with lots saying they want to be involved next year.
The children looked to be enjoying the craft sessions in the Green Room. Hazel Tuck, who is shortly leaving Scrapstore, offerred to help organise it next year. Hurrah!
Thanks to everyone who helped on our stall. It was nice to see you Debbie, hope you got chance for a look round.
There were lots of compliments about the music. We know so many talented musicians I'm sure we could do a music and dancing event sometime.
The food as usual was greatly appreciated. Matt was in awe of the teamwork in the kitchen; many thanks to Sharon and all the crew! And to the bakers of the fabulous cakes! [Sorry that in the general mele yours got overlooked, Shan, but my family are enjoying the chocolate cake very much!]
The greatest appreciation has to go to Shan and Lee-Ann for visiting no less than 4 primary schools to discuss in assemblies what it means to be a Friend to the Earth; and to the schools for the wonderful art work. It deserves a wider audience; the Ferens Education Room perhaps?
Now for a confession: less than a week before the event I checked the boxes of Hull FOE stock and found as I expected we had hardly anything left. I rang FOE to see what they could send quickly. They now do hardly anything except books so, rather against my better judgement I ordered mainly books which came to a total, with postage, of £98.75. None of them sold. I don't need to get the money back straight away, and I'll do my best to find buyers for them, but I really would appreciate some inspiration from people as to what to do about the stall. I don't think any plants sold. I brought back about the same number of second hand books as I sent.
No Climate Change postcards were signed as far as I can see. Perhaps I didn't make it clear enough that we were supposed to try to get people to sign them, to continue to press for a stronger Bill as it goes through Parliament.
We had one accident: A child fell and broke a drinking glass; she wasn't hurt but it could have been nasty. Does anyone know a source of cheap washable plastic beakers? And we ought to nominate someone to be the First Aider.
But lets not end on a down note; It was generally a very successful event,I think.

Beehive changes -Engineers love to change things!!!
I have received this communication from the operators of the Beehive network.
Dear Beehive site administrator/user,
We have recently implemented a change to the Beehive site building
which has been requested by many of the Beehive users.
From now on, when you add a new element to a Beehive page it will
appear at the top of all information on that page rather than at the bottom
as it did previously.
This does have long term benefits for those of you who use your sites
regularly although unfortunately it does mean that all existing pages
are now displayed in reverse order.
Please check your Beehive website and if you need to re-order the
information on your page, you can do this simply by logging in to your
Beehive website and toolkit and using the 'move up' and 'move down' commands
which appear below each piece of information. A tip is that if you
need to move an item several spaces you can click the 'move up/down' link
several times in quick succession and it will do this.
If you have any problems, please contact the helpdesk via
beehive@northcliffemedia.co.uk and we will do our best to help you tidy
your site up as quickly as we can.
We do apologise for any inconvenience although hope that you find this
a benefit in the longer term.
The Beehive team
It will take me some time to make the changes to the Beehive section of the Hull FoE website so please bear with me while I do this.

Archelon and Caretta Caretta
Dear Friends,
My talk on Refuge and Asylum went well on Weds at teh Ferens. About 20 turned up.
I now have a 4MB powerpoint presentation on it should anyone be interested.
the Website now has a whole page of goodly PETITIONS to sign if you have a dull moment! (Yeh, I know, get a life!). :-) Martin.
Meanwhile...
Tired of the winter chill......................Want to spend spring in Greece?
Well you can!

Here is information on Archelon which can be forward to anyone you think would be interested, also do you know of any other local groups who might be interested or other greenpeace groups from other areas? Mikaela.
ARCHELON, the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece is looking for enthusiastic and committed volunteers for demanding sea turtle conservation projects. Zakynthos, Peloponnesus and Crete are major nesting areas for the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) in the Mediterranean and have been monitored by ARCHELON, a non-profit making organisation, for more than 20 years. ARCHELON, in Athens, also runs the only Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Centre in Greece.
The nesting season commences at the end of May and lasts until August. The hatchlings emerge at the end of July through to the end of October. During this period, the work of ARCHELON aims at the protection of nesting females, nests and hatchlings.
Seasonal field work is done between May and October, and involves nest management and habitat protection.
At all locations we run a full public awareness scheme as most sites are under pressure from tourism, so you will be prepared to speak to the public on the beaches, in information station and at hotels.
If you are interested in volunteering with archelon please read the archelon website www.archelon.gr or contact me as 3rd year returning volunteer -

Hull and East Riding Green Party: Response to William Hague's letter
Williams Hague's unqualified support for the use of Menwith Hill as part of Missile Defense is reckless in the extreme.
As events this year amply demonstrate, the Missile Defense system is inspiring a whole new level of military, economic and diplomatic actions from the Russian Federation and from China, so much so that some are calling this a new cold war.
Hague shows no awareness of the issues surrounding Iraq and how this war was driven forward by lie after lie by British and American powers designed merely to get the public onside for a war of aggression led by America and Britain, on an impoverished and almost defenceless Iraq. Now over 4 years later, Iraq is in utter ruins with million having fled their country, milllions displaced within it - and probably upwards of a million dead.
Hague parrots the nuclear threat of Iran despite a complete lack of evidence and very reminiscent of the drumbeat to war on Iraq. We note that Nobel laureate and IAEA inspector Mohamed El Baradei holds Iran to be 'no clear and present danger' and years away from a nuclear weapon.
William Hague somehow believes the Missile Defence system will add to the protection of the UK. This is not what it is designed for. If this huge and expensive white elephant can be got working it is designed to shoot down enemy missiles. Washington pretends these are Iranian missiles, for now, which actually has no intercontinental missiles, but as any onlooker knows, this is ludicrous: Russia and China are the real focus.
Hague's cavalier and dangerous attitude will not advance peace in the world one iota. Quite the opposite. By uncritical support of America Hague opens us up to future charges of further illegal wars, war crimes, rendition and torture - and maybe millions more dead.
We utterly reject his stance.

Please sign the petition against a proposed deal between UC Berkley and BP

Students at UC Berkley have launched an urgent
international petition against a proposed deal between
their university and BP.
You can find the text of the petition and a sign up
form
here:
This deal would see $500 million spent mainly on
biofuel research involving genetic engineering. It
would be one of the largest corporate grants ever
made. The students, as well as a number of
academics at the university, are deeply concerned
about this proposal. Some of their reasons for
objecting to it are:
- environmental sustainability and social impacts have
not been taken into account in this proposed business
deal - this includes the potential impacts of GM
microbes, fungi, and plants developed as
part of cellulosic ethanol research;
- BP will have strong influence over all decisions and
there will be a major focus on research which will
lead to patented technologies, rather than research
for public benefit;
- according to the Stop BP Berkley campaign
(http://www.stopbp-berkeley.org/)
some of the funding will actually go
towards oil and coal developments;
- the proposed director of the planned Energy
Biosciences Institute, which is to be set up as part
of the deal, Chris Somerville, has stated that "my
personal conviction is that every plant used by
humans will eventually be GM".
Yours sincerely,
Almuth Ernsting

Star Wars
"Star Wars": The Green Party Strikes Back
Demonstrators from Hull and area will be among those at a United States spybase in the
Yorkshire Dales, tomorrow (Sat. 13th Oct. from 12-4pm), in protest against its
involvement in the "Star Wars" missile system.
Organised by the Campaign for Accountability of American
Bases (CAAB), this demonstration will take place at Menwith Hill spybase
outside Harrogate: where military, economic and political information is
gathered and fed back to the US Government.
On 25th July, Defence Minister Des Browne announced the UK was giving permission for
Menwith Hill, the largest electronic monitoring station in the world outside
America, to be used in the American Missile Defence System.
Martin Deane, Secretary for the Hull and East Riding Green Party says:
"People hoping for change will be disgusted at this recent move by Gordon Brown's government. The announcement just before MP's went on holiday provided no debate. The British government has just rolled over - once again - to the wishes of the American government."
Jean Lambert MEP (Green Party) - and speaking at tomorrow's demonstration - says:
"Our long-term security requires international conflict resolution and a
commitment to averting potentially disastrous environmental problems like
climate change. On the contrary, this Missile Defence system simply
intensifies divisions between nations."
Key speakers tomorow will be Jon Trickett, MP (Labour), Hilary Wainwright (editor, Red Pepper) and Jean Lambert, MEP.
A tour of the perimeter will be given by Lindis Percy, CAAB campaigner, and Martin Deane of Hull and East Riding Green Party.
Mr Deane concludes,
"Menwith Hill is unaccountable to Parliament or to the British people. The whole Star Wars project - since Reagan's time - has been about American global dominance. What we will see at Menwith Hill tomorrow is a symbol of a new Arms Race and a new Cold War - begun by "us"."
More Detail:
- Menwith Hill spybase employs around 1,800 US civilians and servicemen
- they analyse communications, mainly from Europe, Russia and the Middle East.
- It is run by the American National Security Agency (NSA), which monitors the world's communication for US intelligence,
- All telecommunications traffic to and from Europe and that passing through Britain, is intercepted at the base: including
private telephone calls, faxes, emails and other communications.
- this information is collected from spy satellites, and captured at the site by dishes contained in large white 'golf-balls' or radomes.
- Data is then processed and relayed back to the United States automatically.

WRG wish to store hazardous waste on-site at proposed Saltend waste incinerator. No way!
PRESS RELEASE ON BEHALF OF EAST YORKSHIRE EYE
Is WRG deliberately undermining the authority of the KHCC Planning Committee?
On Oct 10th, Hull Council’s Planning Committee will decide whether WRG can store hazardous waste at the proposed Saltend incinerator. Originally, a Condition18 was imposed on the planning approval. This restriction protected residents from unnecessary pollution. It prevented hazardous waste being stored on-site. At the time, only WRG realised that the incinerator will inevitably produce 12,000 tons of such waste a year.
East Yorkshire EYE say, ‘The Planning Committee wishes to modify the restriction that protects us, so that WRG can operate the incinerator. Because of the enormous quantity of hazardous fly ash produced by the incinerator, such a modification is illogical. The two aims are mutually exclusive. But, because of our respect for the Planning Committee, we will work to reach a satisfactory solution’.
In the meantime, researcher, Mr. K. Kondakor of Nuneaton, (who pointed out to the Planning Committee at the time that approval was granted, that the incinerator is already oversized because household waste in Hull is dropping), has noted a disturbing development.
In January, realising that there will not be enough household waste, council officers pointed out that WRG can supply 30,000+tonnes of commercial/industrial waste to make up any shortfall in council waste.
The Environment Agency is presently concluding a consultation exercise on the licence, which WRG must have to operate the incinerator. The draft licence included an upper limit of 32,000 tons a year on the commercial waste that could be burned.
Now, this limit has been omitted. The goalposts have quietly been removed, (presumably without consulting Hull Planning Committee), so that WRG can change the Saltend incinerator from one for our council waste, to one for any waste from anywhere, for WRG’s profit margins, regardless of residents’ welfare. .
The Planning Committee imposed other restrictions on the original approval. Only waste generated in Hull and the East Riding is to be burned. Heat from incineration of the waste must be used efficiently, for example, to heat housing, in order to prevent unnecessary greenhouse gases, leading to unjustifiable global warming. East Yorkshire EYE believe it will be easy for WRG to get round these.
If Condition 18 is modified, soon we may have an even larger, more oversized, incinerator, (326,000 tons a year was proposed), burning waste from anywhere, (we understand that a loophole allows import of waste for recycling, waste which often cannot in fact be recycled), increasing global warming to no real purpose.
How can the Planning Committee negotiate with WRG, when WRG insist on deliberately undermining its authority?

Want green power? Spend it on renewables
Want green power? Spend it on renewables
I refer to plans to cost £100 million to bury Yorkshire's carbon dioxide.
Every year, hundreds of thousands of tonnes of "Yorkshire coal" are shipped from thousands of miles away, not least a huge open cast pit in northern Colombia .
Thousands of farmers have been forced off their land there to supply us, something instituted under Thatcher in her destruction of the mining industry over here. Britain is a huge trader with this violent state, the No. 1 recipient of US aid and No. 1 world cocaine producer.
What sense does it make to mine coal thousands of miles away, to transport it thousands of miles using other carbon products, to burn it here, and then claim it's ok because we hide the gas!? Doesn't this make a mockery of the thought processes we DO want to encourage?
Most of Yorkshire 's power is not even fairtrade let alone green. You judge green power over the whole carbon life-cycle not what comes out a chimney.
In my opinion this is PR. It's a gravy train.
I go with spending it on renewables, for when the oil runs out

Greens condemn Menwith Hill decision
PRESS RELEASE
Green Party in England & Wales
The Green Party have condemned the Government decision to allow RAF
Menwith
Hill, near Harrogate, to be used as part of the the US
Missile Defence System, in the upgraded ‘Star Wars’ programme.
Green Party Principal Speaker, Dr. Derek Wall said: "Gordon Brown is
like
Tony Blair: a slave to George Bush. The ‘Son of Star Wars’
Missile defence system is a frightening development which could open up
a
new Cold War with Russia. This installation at Menwith Hill puts
the UK in the front line of any attack on America.
"Not only are plans to allow Menwith Hill to be used as part of the US
missile defence system dangerous, but failure to debate the
proposals fully in the House of Commons is the most undemocratic action
of
this Labour Government.”
Notes for Editors:
The two bases Fylingdales and Menwith Hill are to have key roles in
the global network of Signal Intelligence (SIGINT) bases which
monitors the world communications and relays information to NSA HQ at
Fort Meade in Maryland, USA.

WASTE tetra pak con
The tetra pak recycling is a con. They use vast amounts of effort to only recover the fibre from the cardboard and then incinerate the plastic/aluminium composite film.
We should be pointing out that burning plastic and aluminium is not sustainable.
look at all the spin:-
http://www.tetrapakrecycling.co.uk/recycle_more.asp
Cartons are recyclable. In Europe, everyone knows cartons are recyclable. That’s why the continent achieves a 30% rate of beverage carton recycling, and in some countries, like Germany and Belgium, this is as high as 65-70%.
Because cartons are made with between 70 and 90% paperboard, a renewable natural product, we can reclaim much of the carton in the recycling process. This is a straightforward task.
How cartons are recycled : a step by step process
- Baled cartons are dropped into a pulper, similar to a giant domestic food mixer,
- filled with water, and
- pulped for around 20 minutes.
- This breaks down the packaging to produce a grey-brown mixture.
- The aluminium foil and polyethylene are separated from the fibre,
which is recovered to make new paper products.
- The remaining mix of plastic and aluminium can then be used in furniture, to generate energy or even separated out into pure aluminium and paraffin.
The "to generate energy" is the only bit that gives a clue to the incinerator! Neither aluminium or plastic are renewable.

Petraeus Report spins "progress" in Iraq
Dear Friends,
I've just been watching BBC 24 on the Petraeus Report into how the surge goes in Iraq. But as Robert Fisk says "There is no good news coming out of Iraq!"
I must say I was disgusted by the coverage which gave much time to the General's words, more time to Washington think-tankers with criticism highly limited as to be non-existent. I was reminded of the BBC coverage of top US/UK officials in the lead up to Iraq. A media study across US and UK media showed that of all the pro-war coverage the station that scored highest, beating ABC, CNN, and the rest - was the BBC - allowing a mere 2% antiwar voices.
We hear the surge is working, there are less incidents in a number of provinces - but we are being manipulated. Here is Richard Clarke and some more reliable security experts putting things very differently (video, 6mins), "we have no ideaa how many Iraqis have been killed."
Earlier the spin on Radio 4 today was Gen. Petraeus report to Bush on "progress" in Iraq. The ever diplomatic John Bolton was saying how the "4-stars on each shoulder" general will impress everyone with his report (this from the man who said "knock ten storeys" off the UN).
Petraeus claims a drop in attacks (75% ??) in some areas and asks for another 6 months of troop commitment. This is no great surprise. The Americans have made it clear they want US troops there for a long time to come (with occasional pretenses - like this one - that this report - or the next one - will be decisive). They have built the biggest embassy in the world - in Baghdad.
I append the following graph from America's DIA showing the number of attacks on 3 groups: Coalition forces, Iraqi security forces and on Iraqi civilians.
Clearly attacks are obscenely high on forces which routinely claim to be bringing freedom, democracy and peace. In addition claiming there is no civil war going on has been difficult for at least a year, though it won't be as simple as Sunni vs. Shia. Yet it remains true that the main targets are the Americans, by far. This matches the foremost wish of the Iraqi people when polled around election time: get foreign troops out.
There is more in our last Hull Stop the War newsletter (at http://www.sokuto12.karoo.net/ )
This video claims there could be a million dead in Iraq by now.
It uses the most reliable Lancet figures (now backed by the MOD) and then extrapolates.
If that total isn't accurate yet, it won't be long before it is.
With best wishes,
Martin Deane

Camp for Climate Action at Heathrow: what happened?...what next?
Hello
Hopefully all of you were at the Camp or saw it on the news and were inspired...well now it's time to get together and work out what we can all do to take action on climate change together; both locally within Yorkshire and nationally.
On Sunday September 16th we've booked The Common Place in Leeds (directions below) from 1pm so that everyone from Yorkshire can get together and work out what happens next. The Camp for Climate Action was organised non-hierarchically (without leaders, everyone having an equal say) by a network of volunteers around the country. Similarly, what happens next locally and nationally will be decided by all of us together. Coming on the 16th means coming along and voicing your ideas, not coming along and being told what the plan is...exciting eh? There will also be a national gathering in October to work out what happens next nationally, which all teh regional/local meetings will feed in to.
So, here's a rough plan of how the afternoon will go but what we discuss and for how long all depends on who's there and what we want to talk about.
Brunch/hot drinks available in the cafe from 12-2.30
1pm - 2pm - What happened? Short presentations on the 4 aspects of the Camp (sustainable living, direct action, education, movement building) plus some video footage and chance to say how we all found the Camp
2pm - 3pm - What next locally? What can we do in Yorkshire?
3pm - 4pm - What next nationally? Climate Camp 2008, or something else?
We've got the building til 8pm so if people are up for it, we can spend lots more time on the discussions as hopefully there's dozens of ideas to chew over!
Please come along with your ideas about what we can do next, we're all in this together.
See you there!
Cheers,
Martin Deane
The Common Place is at 23-25 Wharf Street (near the Parish Church and market), here's a multimap map. Click here.
It's 5 minutes walk from the bus station and 10 minutes walk from the train station, Just phone 0845 345 7334 if you get lost.

The statement below will be published as an advert in The Guardian. We are asking our supporters to add their names and help pay for it. If you would like your name in The Guardian please send a donation of £20 (£15 for concessions). Alternatively you can sign the online version of the letter for free.
Dear Prime Minister,
We urge you to use your October statement to signal a break from George Bush's foreign policy and to bring all the British troops out of Iraq immediately, regardless of US plans. It is clear the presence of British troops in Iraq is a pointless waste of life. The majority of Iraqis want them to go. Most soldiers have been withdrawn to base outside Basra where they play no active role but are coming under fire regularly and taking heavy casualties. It is time to go.
We need a change of course.

2. Day School On Afghanistan (10:00AM - 5:00PM) Afghanistan: Britain's other war
Afghanistan is fast becoming a disaster paralleling the war in Iraq. The growing number of NATO civilian killings has turned the population against the occupiers. The country's infrastructure has been shot to pieces. This and increased violence is creating an emergency for much of the population. There are now more British troops in Afghanistan than in Iraq, and their death rate in Afghanistan is higher. It is time to turn the spotlight on Afghanistan and demand the troops come home.
Saturday, September 15th in the University of London Union. Speakers include Craig Murray, Dr. Elaheh Povey and Lynda Holmes from Military Families Against the War. Tickets are £6/£4 concessions. To book your space/ to order booking forms in bulk at £2 +p&p for 50, phone 020 7278 6694.
3. Troops Out National Demonstration - 8 October

We are organising a mass demonstration and lobby outside Parliament on 8 October to ensure that our representatives hear what the people want: TROOPS OUT OF IRAQ NOW!
4. Saturday 13 October 2007 12-4ish , KEEP SPACE FOR PEACE, at the American base at MENWITH HILL near Harrogate North Yorkshire.

We expect peace and anti war groups from South America, the Middle East, USA, South Asia, Canada and Europe. The conference will discuss the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan and opposition to any attack on Iran. It will also look at the broader struggle against war and for independence against all the threats of the US administration.
Representatives have been invited from Iraq, Palestine, Venezuala and Pakistan amongst others. We have also invited Polish and Czech organisations who are opposing the Bush 'Missile Defence' plan. The World Against War conference will take place in Westminster Central Hall.

Cynthia McKinney, US Presidential candidate, Green Party 2008, visits
PRESS RELEASE
US Presidential Candidate, Cynthia McKinney, visits Leeds
|
Former Congresswoman and US Green Party Presidential candidate for 2008, Cynthia McKinney, is coming to the UK and will be presenting a talk entitled "Confronting The Empire". The event, organised by the West Yorkshire Truth Campaign, will be held at the James Graham Building (Lecture Theatre B), Leeds Metropolitan University, Headingley Campus, Leeds LS6 3QS on Sunday September 9th at 7.00pm.
In 1992 Cynthia made history when she became the first African American woman to represent Georgia in the United States House of Representatives.
During her tenure, Cynthia won recognition as an outspoken leader for human rights, an ardent advocate for peace, and a determined worker for justice. As reports now surface that US soldiers are returning from Iraq and testing positive for depleted uranium, it is important to note that Cynthia McKinney sponsored legislation to end the use of all depleted uranium weapons until their health effects are known.
|
Cynthia voted against record Bush administration Pentagon budgets, and challenged the Pentagon to explain how it "lost" over $2.3 trillion in un-traceable transactions. She continues to decry the Pentagon's sweetheart deals with Halliburton, the Carlyle Group, and DynCorp and its successor companies.
Cynthia speaks out against the loss of fundamental freedoms under the Bush administration. She became one of the first Members of Congress to demand a thorough investigation into the events of September 11, 2001 and continues to ask: "What did the administration know and when did it know it about the events of September 11th ?" As a result of her thought-provoking question, an estimated 40,000 Republicans voted in the Georgia Democratic Primary to oust Cynthia. This so-called "crossover" voting caused her supporters to file a lawsuit against the practice.
Cynthia will be standing as the Green Party Presidential candidate in 2008

Please TRY to stop the Saltend incinerator being built
EXTRA:
Look here chaps. I know I’m a pain in the arse with my obsession with the incinerator. On Wednesday, we can at the very least, cause WRG such heartburn that they may even win and then, because conditions are still so onerous, back down.
Chris Peach has dropped such a testicle that there is much sympathy for us in the council.
There is so much in his report that can be shredded it’s unbelievable.
I phoned up KHCC this morning to book in a colleague to speak.
I was flabbered to see that only three people had applied. NONE from FOE.
OK. You’re going to come along to the Guildhall at 2.00 pm, on Wednesday 5th. You’ve got you 3-minute presentation honed to perfection. You’re going to speak only on planning issues, not rant. You’ve studied Chris Peach’s disastrous report carefully. You’re so keen to stop the incinerator that you are taking the afternoon off. You’re shaking with tension, (well I am).
Good. If not, then why on earth do you belong to the FOE?
WE HAVE A CHANCE, IF ORGANISED, IF WE SPEAK RATIONALLY, TO AT THE VERY LEAST MAKE WRG BELCH.
I don’t want the glory of walking down the street, waving to cheering crowds of revolting peasants, shouting, ‘Barry, Barry’.
I want to walk arm in arm with you, singing, ‘We are the champions.’
Come on, off yer butts.

Saltend Incinerator: IMPORTANT I believe
Dear Sirs
I do not know to whom I should be addressing this request.
I have admired the transparency of discussions I have had on the proposed modification of Condition 18.
I thank those concerned.
However, it has become clear to me that even those same persons are unaware of the true significance of the proposed modification. .
To modify the Condition 18 in this manner renders it worthless.
In essence it will be interpretable as
‘WRG shall not be allowed to store/process any hazardous waste EXCEPT FOR TWELVE THOUSAND TONNES PER ANNUM of fly ash, (which WRG admit is hazardous), on site’
It has only truly been revealed in the last few days, (previously, it was ‘hidden away’ in two sentences in a 120+ page report), that fly ash is hazardous.
NO indication has been given even yet, that its lime content damages the eyes, to the extent that it will blind you, nor that it is irritating to the skin to such an extent as to desiccate the skin causing unsightly fissures.
I believe that attempts are possibly being made to pass the blame for the fiasco from officers to Members.
I believe there are serious errors in the report recommending approval of the modification.
I believe that it is unreasonable to present such a report at such short notice. I believe that we have been incorrectly guided on the significance of the modification.
The time allowed to study a library of legislative documentation is inadequate.
In this report it is suggested that, in terms of planning issues, nothing has changed. I believe that Baroness Andrews, (formerly of Defra), has indicated in a letter, (copy sent in two separate e-mails), that health issues, (disallowed at the original Committee Meeting), may be allowable.
I believe this issue is now far more fundamental than originally realised. I believe its processing has to be reconsidered.
The time scale of Sept 5th is inappropriate, and must be amended.
Please advise me on this matter.
Respectfully
Barry Robinson

ONE MILLION dead

***Immediate release***
Hull Stop the War claims ONE MILLION Iraqis dead from the war and violence
In their latest newsletter Hull peace campaigners claim that one million Iraqis have now died in the violence since the onslaught of war in March 2003.
Asked about the reliability of the million dead figure, Martin Deane, the group's secretary, said "this figure builds on the widely reported 655,000 Iraqi dead from the Lancet in June 2006. Even the MOD said this figure was sound. But we're one year on now and the trend in violent deaths is rocketing. In 2004 it was 100,000 dead. In 2006 it was over 650,000 dead. Now researchers are beginning to say we are at a million dead. We're not saying that American soldiers and British soldiers have killed a million Iraqis. But WE made war on this country - and the violence we unleashed and the responsibility we have under International Law for health and peace - means it's down to us."
"Bring the troops home! Force the Iraqis to rebuild their own country! Right now Iraqi civil life faces utter destruction," Mr Deane continues, "The UK peace movement wants this war to end. But war will continue while the occupation continues,"
Martin Deane,
Sec., Hull Stop the War,

Notes:
See Youtube: One million killed in Iraq?
Lancet report co-author Prof. Les Roberts explains the 655,000 figure from June 2006, built on sampling and compares with 100,000 dead figure from 2004. Prof. Roberts argues, one year on, the figure needs revising upwards because of evidence from morgues, the latest Oxfam report, the UN claim of hundreds of thousands war orphans. Robert Naiman of the group Just Foreign Policy builds on the Lancet, 2006 study using the trend established by Iraqbodycount.org which counts all media reported deaths.
Prof. Roberts method is a global standardised way of measuring deaths in crisis areas.

Community Open Day
I'm a member of the Hull Friends of the Earth, and am currently organising a Community Fun Day on the Alderman Kneeshaw Park, Bilton Grange, as part of my employment with the Hull City Council. The Fun Day is scheduled to take place on Saturday 1st September between 11am and 4pm, with the aim of involving a broad section of people across the community to promote outdoor recreation and the use of Council park facilities.
I was wondering if you should like to run a stall at the event, promoting the work of Hull Friends of the Earth, and any ongoing current campaigns. Any such stall would be free, and space and park access are adequate. Current confirmed attendees include Hull KR, Hull City, Surestart, Communtiy Support Officers, Hull Libraries, Humberside Fire and Rescue e.t.c. with media coverage provided by both the BBC and the Hull Daily Mail.
I have scheduled a meeting with representatives of each of the different organisations attending the open day for Wednesday 15th August. Apologies for the late notice, however if you were to attend the open day I would be most grateful if you could attend.
Many thanks

WRG hazardous waste
Dear Friends,
URGENT - we only have today and tomorrow to register objections to this.
Good old WRG has submitted a further planning application -
number 00029745B.
Online case number - 07/01001/HAZ
In it, rather than the original wording of "No Hazardous Waste... shall be stored or processed at the site" they want to add "other than the temporary storage of hazardous waste which is produced as a by-product of the approved facility"
Action - Phone Planning Officer Chris Peach on 612734 to raise your objections such as -
- How much waste will be stored?
- How will it be measured
- Will it be secure?
- Does WRG take full responsibility for the safety of the waste?
Best wishes,
Martin Deane
P.S.
I append my email on the WRG waste storage.
You can register objections by phone, but they will get into the written record if they are emailed (or written) in.
So if anyone can email Chris Peach at chris.peach@hullcc.gov.uk

3 - Britain GMO free again!
Indymedia reports activists scaled the fence last week at the Cambridge site and "destroyed" the potato crop there (no details how).
Combined with April's local action in Hedon this makes for just about complete victory over New Labour's plans for a GM Britain.

Melting pot

On what was a rarity, a fine summer’s afternoon, different worlds came together in a carnival melting pot, the Hull Pride event in Pearson Park on Saturday 28th July. Amid bouncy castles, stalls, food and drink venders, colourful stage acts and good music and politics, the community as a whole, filled the park.
The hedonism of summer, perhaps, but after the terrible freakish weather we have been suffering, this was a wonderful uplifting respite from dealing with the consequence of flooding.

Concerning the proposed Saltend incinerator
Well there it is lads and lasses.
The Environment Agency itself has spelled it out for us.
'The lack of heat recovery at the proposed Hull plant [incinerator] is not grounds for refusal of the permit'.
Don't I remember that one of the conditions, (13 or 16?), insists that the plant must recover the heat? Oh, of course, silly me, that condition was possibly carefully worded in such a way as to be worthless. I think WRG have only to theoretically show they could use the waste heat.
And there's me, told off for allegedly implying something's bent.
I just ask the KHCC Planning Committee to do all they can to remedy the situation.
Surely, there has to be some ruling which allows KHCC to rescind the approval if the Planning Committee believes SOMEONE has deliberately misled it on such a vital matter?

Marine Information Network
Friends of the Earth Local Groups
Major New Marine Campaign and AGM
Two main items of news in this edition – we are launching a major new campaign on Marine Reserves in order to secure a real commitment from the UK Government to marine conservation in its forthcoming Marine Bill, and we are asking you and your members to become directly involved in this campaign; and, we have our Annual General Meeting coming up and we hope you will be able to attend, elect our new officers, and tell us about what you have been doing and how you would like MARINET to evolve.
First, the AGM which is on Saturday, 8th September, 4.30 to 5.30 pm . The venue of the AGM is the FOE Local Groups Conference at Reading University . For conference booking details, see http://community.foe.co.uk/conference/ . If your Local Group is attending the Conference, please send a member of your Group to the MARINET AGM to help shape our future over the next twelve months. Full details of the precise room location will be available at the Conference from our stall. If you are an Affiliate member, you are equally welcome to the AGM.
Our present chairman, Julian Kirby (Lambeth FOE) has just secured a full-time job at Underwood Street and has resigned and stepped down from the chair of MARINET due to his other work commitments, and we are most grateful to him for the contribution he has made since his election last year, especially towards our Marine Reserves campaign. As a result, the position of chairman is currently vacant. The Steering Group has decided not to co-opt a chairman in the interim, but to seek a new chair at the AGM in September. All officer positions will be open to election then, so if you would like to take on the role of MARINET Chair or any other position, you will be very welcome. Contact Stephen Eades stephen.marinet@btinternet.com for additional details.
The other major item which we will be discussing and developing at the Conference is our new national Marine Reserves Campaign, full details of which are given overleaf. This is a major new campaigning opportunity for MARINET members, and we will be running a special workshop on this Campaign at the Conference on Saturday 8th September, commencing at 8.00 pm . We are being given strong support by Underwood Street , and the aim will be to develop and train a special campaign team drawn from UK Local Groups and our members to deliver the Campaign aim, which is an extensive and ecologically coherent network of Marine Reserves throughout UK seas within the context of the new Marine Bill. This, therefore, is your chance to learn from an expert campaigner, employed by national FOE for MARINET’s benefit, key campaigning skills which you will then be able to apply to our Marine Reserves Campaign and other campaigns run by your Local Group. This is a major and exceptional environmental campaigning opportunity. Please inform your members. Further details are given overleaf and are available from Stephen Eades, MARINET co-ordinator.
See the MARINET website for an up to date explanation of the Marine Bill
http://www.marinet.org.uk/marinebill.html
Marine Reserves Campaign
The Government’s new Marine Bill lacks a full and convincing commitment to both marine nature conservation and the urgent need to restore the damage which has been done in recent times to UK marine biodiversity and fisheries. Therefore, we are launching a major national campaign to secure the management of at least 30% of the UK’s offshore seas up to the 200 nautical mile limit as highly protected marine reserves (HPMRs, or Marine Reserves in common language).
This extensive network of Marine Reserves has been recommended by the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution when it considered the state of UK seas, but this recommendation and the policy involved has been ignored by the UK Government. Marine reserves are a primary tool of marine management and have been used with great success elsewhere in the world, notably by Australia , New Zealand , South Africa and Canada .
So we are developing a Campaign, focused on the forthcoming Marine Bill, which will persuade the UK Government to enact a Bill which creates a framework for an extensive network of UK Marine Reserves out to 200 nautical miles, using the “ecosystem-based approach to management” as the key idea behind reserve selection and management.
Other MARINET News
The Marine Aggregate Campaign continues to challenge new aggregate licences off the east coast of England , and in the eastern English Channel where a major new area of extraction activity is beginning. Over half the sand and gravel for new buildings in London is now being supplied from these marine sites, and the new Olympic stadiums will be built from this source. See the MARINET website http://www.marinet.org.uk/mad.html
Our analysis of Seaside Bathing Water Quality has shown that the Government’s claim that 99.5% of all beaches comply with EU Quality Standards is a sham, and in fact on 5.5% of UK beaches comply with the full EU Mandatory Quality Standard. Therefore, check bathing water quality at our website
http://www.marinet.org.uk/ukbw.html
before you go bathing this summer.
Our website now gets over 350 visits per day from the public, so its is an ideal place to list your Local Group http://www.marinet.org.uk/regional.html

Re: Flood Damaged Goods query

I expect the metals will be recycled and the fridges have CFCs removed, but I should think other things are too contaminated by sewage and will therefore go to landfill?

Flood Damaged Goods query

Hi,
I left the following query on Hull City Council's website:
"How will the flood-damaged goods currently stacked in the streets be disposed of?
Will it be recycled?
Will it be incinerated? (where appropriate)
Or will it all end up in landfill sites?
I think the public need to know."
I received the following reply:
Flood damaged goods are being collected by the council's waste management team on request from customers and disposed of correctly. If you have any items that need collecting please call 01482 300 300 to arrange a collection.
A disclaimer form has to completed prior to collection.
Regards
Hull City Council.

I wonder what 'correctly' means. Does anyone have any further information?

WASTE The NEW proposed EU Waste directive
The revised Waste Framework Directive will not be finalised until the middle of 2008. The second reading will start in November, with another vote by the Environment Committee in December and then a plenary vote by the full Parliament early next year. The process will finish when Council finalise their second reading position, after which all 27 EU Member States will have to incorporate it into their legal systems.
In their original proposals for the revised Directive, the Commission originally proposed replacing the five step waste hierarchy (reduce > reuse > recycle and compost > energy recovery > disposal) with a three step waste hierarchy, placing prevention first, then reuse, recycling and recovery on the same level, with disposal at the bottom.
MEPs voted to retain the five step hierarchy in February, and at Environment Council vote on 28th June, Environment Ministers also voted for the five step waste hierarchy, which should prioritise prevention, reuse and recycling, including AD, ahead of energy recovery and landfill.
However the Ministers disappointingly failed to reject the proposal to promote incineration by redefining it from 'disposal' to 'recovery', and they did not even attempt to reach agreement on recycling and prevention targets.
If anybody would like to arrange to meet their MEPs and discuss this issue, please get in touch.
Please more info on the Environment Council vote, see the FOEE press release here:

Friends of the Earth - Food & Planning campaign

Protect your local area - Call to action on planning
Major new developments including nuclear power stations, airport runways and large incinerators will be forced through as part of a major overhaul of the planning system across the UK.
At the same time, a government review into supermarket competition may also call for a relaxation in planning laws, opening the way for a surge in out-of-town supermarket development.
These proposals will leave affected communities with no meaningful say in how their area is developed. Friends of the Earth is calling on the Government to rethink its plans and introduce a planning system which allows people a voice in the decisions that affect them and a choice to shop with a diverse range of local retailers.
There is a public consultation on the proposals - the Planning White Paper - until 17 August 2007. Friends of the Earth is aiming to mobilise a huge public response. The key way we will generate this response is through local groups taking the message to the streets through a 'Call to Action' from 30 June to 14 July.
Our aim is to get as many postcards signed as possible and to ensure that people's views are fed in to the consultation process and into the supermarkets inquiry.
Below are lists of resources available for running a great 'Call to Action'. If you want to run a street stall or need any further materials or support, please contact Julian Kirby or Richard Hines.
Please note that due to the different policy implications for England and Wales, there is a different action guide and resources for English and Welsh groups.
More information and briefings on the main planning website

New anti-incineration network - UK WIN
Dear All,
You will be pleased to hear that we successfully launched the UK-wide anti-incineration network on Saturday March 24th. The network voted to go by the name of UK Without Incineration Network – or UK WIN. This network will be open to any group or organisation that opposes the incineration of waste or the production of Refuse Derived Fuel in the UK . The constitution for the network was also adopted at the meeting and if anyone would like a copy we can send it to you.
The people present also elected five members to the steering group. These are:
Stephen Eades – North Wiltshire Friends of the Earth
David Levy – The Air that we Breathe Group
Neil Pitcairn – Greenpeace activist based in Surrey
Andy Tubb – lecturer at University of the West of England
Max Wallis – Barry and Vale Friends of the Earth
There will also be a member of the Friends of the Earth waste team on the steering group. Currently this is Anna Watson but from now on it will be Garrett Reynolds, who is Anna’s maternity cover at Friends of the Earth. The Waste and Resource Use team at Friends of the Earth is committed to the success of this project.
The immediate aims of the steering group are to:
- Agree roles on the group – ie Chair, Treasurer and Secretary
- Market the network to potential members
- Develop the website
- Employ a coordinator
The steering group will no doubt be in contact with you over the next few weeks asking groups and individuals to sign up as members to the network.
We have submitted a funding bid to the Manuka Club to fund a part-time coordinator for the network for the first year. Their main task will be to act as a first point of contact for local groups opposing incineration, putting together a website for the network and identifying sources of information for local campaigners and ensuring that the groups are well networked.
The presentations from the meeting on March 24th are now up on a website and can be downloaded at
