Wind turbine bat threat evidence
Wind turbine bat threat
"The Green Party welcomes the recent articles explaining the actual threat bats face from wind turbines.
Martin Deane, of Hull and E.Rding Green Party comments, "the Canadian study shows that bats are affected by the sudden change in pressure as the turbine blades move through the air. The pressure differential is more than the bats' lungs can cope with and they haemmorrhage and die. The condition is being called barotrauma.
It is reported that less than one bat fatality per turbine per year is considered normal, according to Canadian scientists. At this particular wind farm, the numbers were closer to 18 bats per turbine.
Mr Deane continues, "as ever the detail is important. This is the Baerwald study on the windfarms in Southwest Alberta, Canada. The windmills used there are monsters - single blades are 40 metres long and can do over 150 mph. There may be an easy solution. It should be possible to build in a simple sonic bat repellent to warn bats away from wind turbines. There are existing products that can do this already.
"I don't know of any comparable threat to bats or birds in Britain - except cats, of course!"

Baerwald study - In May 2007, the US National Research Council published the results of a survey of US wind farms showing that two bat species accounted for 60% of winged animals killed. Migrating birds, meanwhile, appear to steer clear of the turbines.

The Carbon Connection
Video: The Carbon Connection -- The human impact of carbon trading Two communities affected by one new global market ? the trade in carbon dioxide. In Scotland, a town has been polluted by oil and chemical companies since the 1940s. In Brazil, local people's water and land is being swallowed up by destructive monoculture eucalyptus tree plantations. Both communities now share a new threat.
As part of the deal to reduce greenhouse gases that cause dangerous climate change, major polluters can now buy carbon credits that allow them to pay someone else to reduce emissions instead of cutting their own pollution. What this means for those living next to the oil industry in Scotland is the continuation of pollution caused by their toxic neighbours. Meanwhile in Brazil, the schemes that generate carbon credits gives an injection of cash for more planting of the damaging eucalyptus plantations.
The two communities are now connected by bearing the brunt of the new trade in carbon credits. The Carbon Connection follows the story of two groups of people from each community who learned to use video cameras and made their own films about living with the impacts of the carbon market.

I think this will be of interest to all here, though I think 'carbon con' might be a more fitting title. Stunning video.

Cars V People
Just found this-
Lee-Ann
CARS VS PEOPLE: THE FIGURES
- *47% of the Mexician' diet is corn
- *it takes 2.4 pounds of corn a day to feed a hungry person
- *it takes 22 pounds of corn to make one gallon of ethanol
- *there are 42 gallons of refined gas in one barrel of oil
- To replace one barrel of oil, it takes 42 gallons of ethanol or 924 pounds of corn. That is enough corn to feed one hungry person for 385 days. If you fill up with ethanol, every time you pull that SUV into the gas station and pump 22 gallons, you starve a poor person for six months.

Never again
On this day...
- For the first time in history one bomb killed an enitire city.
- It was 1945, 6th August, just after 8.15 in the morning.
- The city was Hiroshima, Japan, the first victim of the recently developed American atom bomb.
- An estimated 80,000 people died instantly. By the end of 1945, with victims from radiation poisoning the total deaths may have been 140,000.
- 3 days later, on the 9th August, the city of Nagasaki was wiped out. Most died instantly but 80,000 were dead by the end of the year.
Hiroshima Memorial: This Sunday 10th August, 12.30pm
In Hull on Sunday there will be a Hiroshima Memorial for these events.
It will be held in the Peace Garden at the Hull College end of Queen's Gardens.
It will be a time of peace and quiet with some readings on the subjects.
This has happened for many years in Hull and is led by the Quakers Society of Friends in Hull.
Some leading American military at the time were sure that Japan had all but surrendered anyway and that use of the A-bomb was unnecessary.
Martin Deane,
Green Party
Hiroshima and Nagasaki -
Never again
The first choice target was the ancient capital of Kyoto - but - "...the only person deserving credit for saving Kyoto from destruction is Henry L. Stimson, the [USA] Secretary of War at the time, who had known and admired Kyoto ever since his honeymoon there several decades earlier."
- Some estimates state up to 200,000 had died by 1950 from Hiroshima alone, due to cancer and other long-term effects.
- From 1950 to 1990, roughly 9% of the cancer and leukemia deaths among bomb survivors was due to radiation from the bombs.
- At least eleven known prisoners of war died from the bombing.

Green musicians
Dear All,
One of the highlights of last year's Green Fair was the excellent music. We'd love to hear you all again at this year's Hull FOE Green Fair on
Saturday 22nd November 2008 at Spring Bank Community Centre.
We haven't started planning it yet, but this is to make sure you reserve the date. [Please note it is not the usual last Sat in November]. Please could you pass the message on to all who might want to participate. This year we are hoping to involve some of the ethnic groups who live around the Spring Bank Area in the Green Fair, so we may find other musicians get involved but we don't want to lose our regulars.

Hazel Blears and the Planning Bill
Re: a letter from Hazel Blears MP, addressing the points I made in an email letter to Alan Johnson MP re the Planning Bill:-
From the beginning it sounds like she is using a similar argument as that used for similar erosions of democracy and civil liberties; such as demographic change, changing energy sources and the implications for security of energy supply etc.as justification for the bill. She refers to "nationally significant infrasrtucture" which could of course mean nuclear power stations, airport extensions and so on. Suggesting that such developments will override local considerations. Addressing the FoE amendments, she says there is no need for them as they are already enshrined in the bill.
I guess it will be up to those with a more detailed knowledge of the bill to ascertain whether this is so or not. I'll leave it to you to decide whether to forward it to the group or not.
Perhaps others might wish to comment on it.

Green candidate gets support from well-known human rights campaigner
Peter Tatchell urges support for Green candidate
PRESS RELEASE
?It?s a two-horse race. The only serious challenger to David Davis is Shan Oakes, the Green Party candidate,? says human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell.
?The Greens are the party of universal human rights. Shan Oakes is the best choice for voters who want to defend all our liberties and oppose all forms of discrimination in this by-election.
?Labour and the Liberal Democrats are not standing. It is a straight contest between Davis and Oakes.
?Although Mr Davis opposes 42 days detention without charge, he supports detaining people for up to 28 days and many other erosions of our hard-won freedoms. He is not a true standard bearer of universal human rights.
?If Mr Davis gets a thumping majority, it will endorse his mixed bag of liberalism and authoritarianism. It will signal to the Conservative Party that people are content for some of our precious liberties to be undermined,? said Mr Tatchell.
David Davis?s illiberal, authoritarian record:
?David Davis supports capital punishment, 28 days detention without charge, restrictions on the right to protest within a mile of parliament and a ban on schools supporting gay families.
?He voted to preserve the criminal offence of blasphemy and opposed an equal age of consent for gay men. He led the attack on the Human Rights Act and has pledged to abolish it.
?Davis also backs control orders, which are a draconian form of house arrest for people who have not been charged with any offence and which can last indefinitely, even for years.

Fuel hike threat to EYMS bus services
EYMS is just one private bus company holding its hand out for bigger government subsidies, i.e. more taxpayer's money, in order to continue making a profit. The simple solution is to nationalise the lot.
Fuel hike threat to EYMS bus services
THE region's main bus operator today admitted it was looking ?very carefully? at cutting or reducing a number of loss-making bus routes due to spiralling fuel costs.
East Yorkshire Motor Services (EYMS) said changes to the way the Government gave it money to cover the cost of fuel duty meant it was now paying almost twice as much for diesel as it was last year.
The company currently forks out a staggering ?140,000 a week filling up its fleet of 320 buses and coaches.
EYMS chairman Peter Shipp said that was ?55,000 a week more than was being paid out in January last year and that a recent five per cent fare increase was failing to cover the rising fuel costs.
He said: ?We are now paying about ?55,000 more for diesel each week than in January 2007 and at best the fare increase can bring in only about one-third of that.
?We are having to look very carefully at some marginal and loss-making bus routes.
?Such routes have in the past been supported by the profits we make on other routes, but those profits are now being slashed and our ability to subsidise the poor routes is greatly reduced.?
Operators such as EYMS used to receive a rebate from the Government that covered the full duty on fuel for local bus services. However, a change in the rules several years ago meant a gap in funding had opened up.
Mr Shipp said: ?To restore the shortfall would go some way towards helping operators with the horrendous rises in fuel costs we are all suffering, which risk more fare rises and service cuts.?
Adam Fowler, chief community environment officer of the City of Hull and Humber Environment Forum ? which looks at public transport issues in the region ? said a ?hit list? of routes was being drawn up.
He said: ?EYMS is facing a double whammy of fuel duty on the one hand and the money buses get back for carrying passengers over 60 on the other.
?The public are going to see full buses and wonder why services are getting cut.
??50,000 is a lot of money and the ship is getting nearer the iceberg, and that is a worry.
?This is a real worry here and nationally. Soon we are going to be left with just the high-volume routes.
?The Government is going to have to do something before long.
? Mr Shipp said EYMS was working to reduce the number of routes that could be affected. The list is expected to be announced in the next two weeks.

Yorkshire Star Wars
GREENS UP IN ARMS AS YORKSHIRE SPY BASE COMMITS TO US ?STARWARS?

NEWS RELEASE
From Shan Oakes, Green Campaign for the Haltemprice and Howden By-Election
04 July 2008
Local Peace Campaigners affected by Counter Terror Bill
The present ?terror? legislation has been used to imprison local people who are protesting peacefully. The new Counter Terror Bill would make things worse.
For example, take the cases of Helen John, 68, and Sylvia Boyes, 62, who were both arrested in April 2006 under the Serious Organised Crimes and Police Act 2005 for trespassing just 5m across the sentry line at the US military base at Menwith Hill. They were protesting against what they felt were increasingly draconian anti-terrorism laws. In October 2007 they were both found guilty of trespassing at the US spy base and given a conditional discharge. Known in some press reports as the ?terrorist grannies?.
Shan Oakes, Green Candidate for the Parliamentary By-Election in Haltemprice and Howden says:
Under the Counter-Terrorism Bill 2008, these two elderly peace campaigners could be in bigger trouble. The Bill proposes that anyone convicted of a ?terrorism? offence could face a ban on travel, or a requirement to report to the police whenever they spend a night away from home. For example they might be told never to go near a base again, or never to travel abroad again[1].
Removing our Civil Liberties by Stealth ? US Military Communications on our doorstep
Yet Menwith Hill also highlights a much wider removal of civil liberties by stealth.
?Today, protesters are challenging the government who secretively passed through parliament a decision to base communications for the US Missile ?Defence? System at the Menwith Hill RAF site, on the day that MPs were leaving Westminster for their summer holiday in 2007.
?The Counter-Terrorism Law is the same. This is about far more than 28 or 42 days. Our civil liberties are being eroded through a series of increasingly draconian laws.?
Dr Caroline Lucas, Principal Speaker for the Green Party addressed a rally today at the US military base at Menwith Hill, North Yorkshire . She will address the protest rally at this US military facility in Yorkshire on the urgent need to achieve full independence from the US on matters where national security and sovereignty risk being undermined.
Locating elements of the US military?s Missile ?Defence? System at military facilities in the UK amounts to a shocking betrayal of the British public by its leaders, said Dr Caroline Lucas MEP today.
At the demonstration this evening, Dr Lucas MEP will say: ?Hosting the American Missile ?Defence? System makes Britain complicit in the US military agenda and places us on the front line of any future
US war. It seriously undermines our national security and enfeebles our political leadership.
?Let it be clear that there is nothing ?defensive? about this missile system. It is simply another component of the US strategy to achieve ?Full Spectrum Dominance? ? in other words, full military control of land,
sea, air and space.
?It will enable the US to attack countries without fear of retaliation. Its development has attracted international controversy, inevitably carrying with it the potential to provoke a brand new global arms race and thus
increasing the danger of nuclear weapon use.
?The decision to allow the US to base communications at Menwith Hill was not subject to a vote in Parliament ? an outrageous betrayal of public confidence given the huge importance and potential consequences of the missile system.?
?The British people deserve to know the truth about covert US military activity on UK soil and concerns must be heeded by our political leaders. Yet, under this Government?s Counter Terrorism Bill, crucial civil
liberties ? such as the right to hold a peaceful protest ? are being gradually eroded.?
ENDS

What a full day
Dear Friends,
We had a good media day today, and at least got some variety of coverage for Shan. There was a press conference in Willerby and pm we worked Cottingham a bit.
Later we tracked down David Cameron and David Davis at South Hunsley School. They were trying to have a private meeting with the Youth Assembly and their crowd of Tory supporters, and had minders on the front gates. Shan was not happy with this as she had been invited to the meeting with the Youth Assembly (being a supporter and previous speaker for them) and was also looking forward to debating the issues with the Double Daves. So negotiations with the Head took place.
After their meeting the Dynamic Double Dave Duo departed swiftly, avoiding Shan at the gate who didn't get the chance to "doorstep" them with a large microphone a reporter had covertly given her. Then the Youth Assembly came next door and we had a good debate with Shan about what had just happened ("That's not democratic!") and a variety of GP policy they asked about.
Shan was interviewed by BBC Look North and ITV News, featuring in both calendar programmes.

Pesticides on Radio Humberside
I've just been contacted by Sarah from Radio Humberside. She said there is a big conference going on in Belgium about banning pesticides, but local farmers are complaining that banning pesticides could ruin their livelihoods. She wondered if I or a FoE rep could give our opinion on tomorrow's breakfast show. I told her I'm not an expert in that area and suggested someone from the Soil Association might be a better source for comment.
She seems not to have heard of the SA so I said I'd try to find someone for her. if you have a S.A. contact could you let me know?

Tesco protest
Tuesday 3rd June is the national day of action with the theme 'food and climate change'. a few of us in Hull decided that it was about time we paid our local Tescos a visit!! We're planning a 'street theatre' type action aimed at raising awareness about tescos recent support of biofuels (they have 25% shares in Greenergy, Imingham) and Tecos negative impacts on local communities.
the action will involve a 'die-in' where some typical victims of texcos policy (so far we have a tree (deforstation), a farmer, a tiger and an urangutan!!!!) will lie down and play dead outside the shop, whilst a 'vicar' reads a sermon about the perils of the supermarket takeover!!!!!
Sould be fun, and pretty tame/risk free!!! we need support though.....we could use a few pairs of hands to hand out leaflets, and to hold up a banner outside the shop! So please, if anyone is interested and wants to display their unhappiness about the recent Hull 'takeover', come along and give us your support!
Meet outside the Nagshead, Newland Avenue at 9pm, tues 3rd June.

Protect communities and rainforests in Colombia
We would ask you to take part in another urgent email action, to protect
communities and rainforests in Colombia from agrofuel expansion. The
Colombian government continues to promote the expansion of vast oil palm
plantations, including in Choc
This is one of the world's most biodiverse regions, with large areas of
rainforest now facing destruction. The Chocinforests are home to
7,000 to 8,000 species, including 2,000 endemic plant species and 100
endemic bird species. Even before the current palm oil and agrofuel
expansion, 66% had been destroyed. Communities who have returned to their
lands, which had been illegally appropriated by palm oil companies, face
threats and intimidation. There have been assassination attempts and
threats against community leaders.

Water Walk
Dear Practical Action:
Our local Water Walk yesterday was very successful. Sponsored by Friends of the Earth and preceded by 3 newspaper announcements, a radio interview and numerous leaflets and posters we raised ?160.00 As we have connections both with your organization and with Samaritan?s Purse who also are helping the water problem in the developing world by doing the same thing as Practical Action, we decided to split the money collected and therefore your half, or ?80 is enclosed.
In addition to the walkers who walked for five hours, half of the way carrying a 15 litre container filled with river water to get an idea of the weight African women have to contend with, there were a number of sponsors who were: A & B Livaag (87 Ella Street, Hull), M & S. Brice (2 Walnut Tree Way, Hull) M. Pearn (Penarth, S. Wales), P. Williamson, (60 Westbourne Ave., Hull), A. Crick (45 Westbourne Ave., Hull), B. Wheatley (70 Westbourne Ave., Hull) I. Jolliffee (47 Kingsway, Cottingham), P & M Dack and A. McKenzie (54 Normandy Ave., Beverley). There were also some generous persons encountered on the hike who also contributed.
In carrying the water, the idea arose that it would be quite easy for an African family to fashion a little cart to wheel the water supply along and we are wondering why this hasn?t been suggested in your literature. Also, since carrying the water was a real chore, we have taken photos of our efforts for posterity and would like to know if you would like us to send you some by e-mail for your own literature. We wish you continued success with all your good work.
Yours truly,
Dr. H. P. Livas-Dawes, Ph.D., Mrs.

This is all because of the Government?s Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO).
The 2.5% will rise to 5% in 2010.
Most biofuels will:
- Lead to increased competition for land.
- Raise food prices.
- Drive rainforest destruction.
- Do little to reduce emissions.
The Government needs to call a halt to mandatory targets for biofuels.
The Department for Transport has the responsibility to stop this process, and to ensure that full and effective safeguards are in place.
Ask Ruth Kelly, Transport Secretary, to postpone the introduction of the RTFO

Deepening crisis in Tibet
Dear Friends,
Please consider the following petitions regarding the deepening crisis in Tibet.
Regards,
Martin
Petition for Gordon Brown to meet Dalai Lama re Chinese occupation of Tibet
http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/DalaiLama/
Petition for botycott of Olympic Games in China on human rights grounds/Tibet
http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Reincarnation/
March 17, 2008, Tibet in "desperate situation", warns envoy
The situation in the city of Lhasa is extremely grave with the population living under de facto martial law, said the Dalai Lama's Geneva-based European envoy.
More than 80 people have been killed and several hundred injured, and protests are spreading to other parts of Tibet, Kelsang Gyaltsen told swissinfo.
"Even though the Chinese government doesn't dare to officially announce it, the situation in Lhasa is de facto martial law," he said.
Schools and monasteries are sealed off, and there are heavy restrictions on people's movements with security forces stepping up their hunt for rioters in house-to-house searches, he explained.
Around 400-500 people who received gunshot wounds are without medical assistance, scared of being arrested if they go to hospital, Gyaltsen added.
On Monday a senior Chinese official denied that troops had used lethal force to quell protests in Lhasa, claiming that they had shown huge restraint in the face of violent protests by Tibetans, which it said were orchestrated to wreck Beijing's Olympic Games in August.
Qiangba Puncog, the government chief in Tibet, said that only 13 "innocent civilians" were killed and dozens of security personnel were injured in Lhasa when several days of monk-led protests broadened into riots in which houses and shops were burned and looted last Friday.
Fears
There were reports of troops pouring into neighbouring provinces to quell copycat protests and riots which had broken out in Tibetan communities in the provinces of Sichuan, Qinghai and Gansu over the weekend.
China has given Tibetans involved in the protests a deadline of midnight on Monday (16.00hrs GMT) to surrender to police or face tougher punishment.
Gyaltsen said he was fearful of a crackdown by the Chinese government.
"We are deeply worried as the Chinese are expelling non-governmental organisations and foreigners in Tibet. The Chinese government seems to want to seal Tibet from the outside world," he said.
Speaking from his home in India's Himalayan foothills on Sunday, the Dalai Lama called for an investigation into what he called cultural genocide in Tibet.
Protests
There have been daily pro-Tibet protests around the world since last Monday, the 49th anniversary of an uprising against Chinese rule.
Up to 2,000 people demonstrated outside the Chinese consulate in Zurich on Saturday. Police used tear gas against some participants.
Protests have also been held in other countries, such as India, Nepal, France, Britain, the United States and Australia.
The Swiss foreign ministry condemned "acts of violence" against demonstrators in Tibet. Similar appeals for restraint have been made by other western governments, including the US, Britain, France, Germany and Australia.
The head of the parliamentary group for Tibet, Mario Fehr, said that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) should ensure that human rights were respected in China, ahead of the Beijing Olympics this summer.
The president of the IOC, Jacques Rogge, said that no boycott of the summer games in Beijing was envisaged.
But the Swiss Olympic Committee wants the IOC to intervene with China over the troubles in Tibet.
"The Rubicon has been crossed," said its president, J?Schild. "I can't bring myself to say that we're going to go there and do sport."

Green event in the Hessle Road Area?
Dear Friends,
Please see below about supporting a green fair in Hessle Road area.
I'm sure the Green Party and Hull Stop the War would be up for a stall. Quakers almost certainly now being new neighbours? Perhaps FOE could send it round to get some soundings from other groups.
Sounds like a fine idea,
Best wishes,
Martin Deane
Im Eddy and in my job life I work on Hessle Road running a small Community Centre .
In a nutshell im trying to put together some sort of 'Green' event at the Hall i run. A green fair of some description, groups , stalls demonstrations etc.
We can provide the Hall ( for free) and can provide some publicity printing mailouts etc. Whilst i realise that promoting 'green' living ideas etc is something that people in the Spring Bank/Avenues/Dukeries areas are more likely to be interested in on the whole, I do think that it is important to attempt to do these things in this ward which is officially a deprived area.
There is no real date or deadline set , but if you have any ideas or are interested please let me ( and anyone else who may be helpful) know and we could discuss a possible event maybe at the Hall I run ( Boulevard Village Hall)
Thanks

I wonder if you can help?

I wonder if you could help with the following project? You may have a suitable home yourself, know of others who do, or be able to forward this email to other people. If you want more information please feel free to contact me.
Do you have an Old Home? Is it a SuperHome?
Two national charities have joined together in a project to find and promote exemplar properties throughout the country. These are homes which have been fully renovated to improve their energy efficiency and are now able to show an average 60% carbon saving.
The project aims to make these houses accessible to the public by assisting with Open House Days. These days allow the general public to tour the properties to investigate the measures taken. They work to show other householders how to replicate the techniques and inspire them to make the changes to their own dwellings.
For those householders who do not feel able to open their homes there is also the option of a Virtual Open House Day by means of a video fly through.
So, could your home be a SuperHome? More information can be found on the websitewww.s-ea.org.uk where you can also view homes which have already joined the project.

If a beach you would like to help out at isn't listed that's because we don't have a local organiser to run the event or they haven't registered yet so hopefully you may be able to find an alternative. The website is being updated regularly so please keep an eye on here as more and more events and beaches are added. I have also attached a copy of our volunteer guidelines for your information. These will also be in your posted pack. We will be in touch again soon but hope this helps for now in case you have lots of volunteers who may like to get involved. Look forward to speaking to you again soon.

Re: WASTE new WRAP report - CO2 impacts of transporting the UK?s recovered paper and plastic bottles to China
The report is talking about the 1, 2 and 3 types [HDPE and PET bottles]
being sent to China. British industry just can't use enough to take up what
is collected, apparently, though it is growing.
Whats interesting is that most of it is occupying containers that would
otherwise be returning to China empty [so the report says] because we import
so much more from China than we export.
The report is worth reading.

WASTE new WRAP report - CO2 impacts of transporting the UK?s

I know the UK doesn't have the facilities to recycle plastic that doesn't
have 1, 2or 3 in the recycling triangle.
Are the latter processed in this country or do they have to be shipped
abroad- though surely not all the way to China? Our local council
collects 1,2,3 so they shouldn't end up in landfill anyway.

Greetings from Sierra Leone
Dear all,
I hope you are all doing fine.
I realise it is not easy these days out there to send container .Even though we need it for our Medical clinic.
Here these days the poor man finds it very difficult to get medical attandance because the amount the doctor charge can not be afford by the poor.Well what would happen to our members and communities working with us when we sick. Therefore our goals are the MDGs.
I know you realy want to help us. But we are not going to make decision. What you give us we will accept and thank God. Pray the God bless you for your support.
Congratulation for having stalls at FAIRS and EVENTS. We will make good use of this opportunity. We will share ideas and do what ever we are able to succeed.

Clayoquot Sound, Canada's Ancient Temperate Rainforest under threat

I saw a TV documentary about the struggle against logging here in the 1990s. It was perhaps the most inspiring ecological campaign I've ever seen and led me to join Friends of the Earth. Clayoquot Sound is breathtakingly beautiful and teeming with wildlife. We must not let it be destroyed.Dave We really need increased participation! Please send and forward!
This alert continues 15 years of successful EI activism on the matter.
ACTION ALERT UPDATE
Clayoquot Sound, Canada's Ancient Temperate Rainforest
Valleys to Again Fall to Logging
By Forests.org, http://forests.org/ and
EcoEarth.Info,http://www.ecoearth.info/
July 28, 2008
TAKE ACTION
These ancient forests must be fully protected and all
industrial development ended to preserve biodiversity and
ecosystem health, focusing upon employment from standing trees
and fully intact ecosystems, and failure to do will lead to a
renewed "War of the Woods" and global anti-B.C. markets campaign
http://forests.org/shared/alerts/send.aspx?id=canada_clayoquot_logging
Canada's precious temperate rainforests are again threatened
with industrial logging. Clayoquot Sound, which lies along the
West coast of British Columbia (B.C.), is a spectacular mosaic
of lush coastal rainforests, fjord-like inlets and islands
covering 850,000 acres. Such intact coastal temperate
rainforests are globally rare, covering only about one-fifth
of one percent of the Earth's land area, half of which has
already been destroyed. They are amongst the most biologically
productive temperate ecosystems in the world. Clayoquot Sound
is the most magnificent expression of temperate rainforest in
North America.
There is no such thing as ecologically sustainable industrial
logging or other industrial activities in a fully intact
ancient forest ecosystem. Ancient forest logging must end
worldwide to solve climate change, protect all biodiversity
and achieve global ecological sustainability. Encourage all
involved in British Columbia's forest policy to commit
themselves fully to developing methods for employment and
community advancement based upon standing forests and fully
intact ecosystems. Or else promise you support a return to the
blockades and protests that halted logging in Clayoquot in
1993, as well as a massive overseas campaign targeting B.C.'s
markets. Surely rich Canada can find a way to spare these
locally and globally vital ecosystems.

Green Party states road policy
Greens to scrap Road Tax
On Radio Humberside this morning, Martin Deane of Hull & East Riding Green Party called for the scrapping of Road Tax:
“The motorist deserves the bonus after all the recent oil hikes. Government plans will make the grossly unfair Road Tax more unfair again with some car taxes planned to double.
"The Green Party will scrap it altogether.
“Of course roads still have to be paid for, so we would transfer the cost to fuel. But we spread the costs and bin the Road Tax. And we use the taxes for the one thing that will future-proof transport: attractive, affordable public transport for all.
What about the decline of oil and alternative technologies?
“The problems of oil aren’t going away. Oil corporations are hugely powerful and are making a fortune. But a responsible government will seek to protect us from the problems of rising costs and increasing scarcity – not to dump them on us and make us pay through the nose!
“You can’t call this £2 billion tax ‘green taxes’ without spending them on Britain's number one transport priority: affordable, reliable public transport for everyone - as the Green Party has been saying for years!
“But there is no investment in that. Government plans for MORE road building, and MORE cars paying MORE taxes. But for these plans – like for oil – their days are numbered.
Points Mr Deane didn’t get to make include:
“People understand taxes – they approve of spending on education, on health, on welfare for the vulnerable. But they deplore government spending on many areas. Here government is choosing to make the oil companies even richer, standing by as oil goes through the roof while the oil majors make the biggest profits in human history.
“The Green Party stands for a transport focus on the need to future-proof the next generation by providing affordable, attractive public transport for all. This won't exploit people like the present rule of oil.
“Yes, alternative energies have a part to play, fascinating inventions like India’s Air Car or the Tesla Roadster electric. But there are major questions about taking this route wholesale. Do we really want a world built on the next level of inequality? Because there are not the resources across the planet to do all over again what we have done with the internal combustion engine.
“The major use for alternative energy isn’t individual transportation, it’s so we can safeguard what we use to heat with and cook with in the future.
Martin Deane
Sec, Hull & E.Riding Green Party
Notes:
Telegraph – 4.8.8 – Road Tax plans in disarray.
“The Government plans huge hikes in Road Tax which are unfair on the larger cars for larger families, up to £450 cost.
In May we saw 1000 trucks converge on London in protest at fuel prices – at least this will ease the burden.

Policies not personalities
?It?s about policies not personalities!?
The Green Party?s Shan Oakes bashes fake Miliband leadership contest.
In David Miliband?s interview, Thursday, on BBC's Jeremy Vine Show, the focus was sadly on personality and not policy.
But Shan Oakes, who stood against David Davis in last month?s by-election for the Green Party, has different ideas.
?Whoever is in charge of the 'old' parties,? Ms Oakes says, ?we still get the same old policies - policies supporting profit, not policies promoting the welfare of people and planet.?
?We need an ethical policy at home and an ethical policy abroad - instead we?re served up with streams of smooth-sounding soundbites.
?Miliband wriggled out of the lack of a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty. People want it - and the people would have said no. So, we weren?t given the chance and instead government signed it anyway.
?On the Middle East, we were told Iran is not behaving like a ?normal country?! But David Miliband failed to remind us that there is only one nuclear armed state in the area - Israel - with an estimated 200 nuclear weapons. Iran is apparently not ?a normal player in the international nuclear game?. Presumably Israel is - with dozens of UN resolutions against it ? the state which bombed Syria in 2007 - the state which went to war on Lebanon in 2006.
?It?s heartening to hear on Iran that ?100 per cent of our effort is focused on the diplomatic track? - but we remember Blair wanting a ?diplomatic solution? on Iraq, 5 year ago.
?Today, an ethical policy on Iraq means ending the adventure and bringing our troops home. On Iran it means rejecting the option of starting a war, as we started a war on Iraq.
?Miliband is being talked about as Brown's successor, but whether someone sounds ?more confident? or 'smoother' - or more like Tony Blair - does not make them any better. The policies stay the same: profit, growth and empire building!?
?It?s time for proper political debate on the fundamental issues.?

Routh wind farm
East Riding Council claims wind turbines could ruin Beverley's 'cherished landscape'
The views of two of Beverley's most iconic buildings could be ruined if plans to create a wind farm are given the go-ahead, according to East Riding Council.
The local authority warned stunning views of the Minster and St Mary's Church would be obscured ? especially from the Westwood ? if 12 huge turbines were allowed to be built at the village of Routh.
A public inquiry into the controversial plans by RidgeWind Ltd to site the 100m-high turbines at Hall Farm began at the council offices in Skirlaugh yesterday.
Megan Thomas, representing the council, maintains the visual impact would be significant and provides grounds for refusal.
She also argued the East Riding was already set to exceed its renewable energy targets.
Miss Thomas said: ?Views of the townscape and landscape from the Westwood are cherished views and are by no means ordinary.
?The turbines would contrast starkly with the pastoral, parkland nature of the Westwood.
?In light of the number of operational and consented wind turbine schemes in the area, the need for this particular one is not overwhelmingly compelling.
?The landscape and heritage harm can be justifiably avoided by refusing permission.?
Local residents have also voiced concerns, with 22 of the 26 nearby households objecting to the plans.
Representative Barry Norton insisted the development would impact on their quality of life.
In a statement submitted to the inquiry, he said: ?The impact is significant and unacceptable to the historic landscape and views of Holderness Plain, which are protected by local development policies.
?The turbines will be a blot on the landscape, which need not, and should not, be there.?
But the developers claim the wind farm would bring a ?5m economic boost to the region.
David Goodman, representing RidgeWind Ltd, said any negatives would be outweighed by the positives and there was a need for greener forms of energy.
He told the inquiry: ?It is clear the development will not have a significant harmful effect.
?Any effects that may be adverse must be weighed with the policy support for this form of development and the benefit it would bring.
?It is evident those benefits far outweigh any adverse effects.?
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has warned the plans could endanger aircraft flying over the region.
In the Ministry's statement to the inquiry, Squadron Leader Neal Henley said he believed the turbines could interfere with radars, which were vital in guiding aircraft and identifying potential threats.
He explained the Air Surveillance and Control System (ASACS), which uses the radars, helped avoid mid-air collisions.
Sqd Ldr Henley said: ?It is assessed the proposed wind farm developments at Hall Farm would have an unacceptable impact upon the operations controlled by the ASACS force.
?Therefore, the MoD strongly objects to the proposed wind farm as it will jeopardise both air surveillance and the safe control of aircraft.?
The public inquiry into the proposed wind farm at Routh continues.

Getting up steam in Little Weighton
We moved on to Little Weighton Steam Fair where, amidst clouds of smoke and tunes from Mary Poppins played on a steam organ , we chatted to people drinking tea or beer. One 5 year old asked, ?what party are you going to?? When I explained that a ?party? is a group of people who have ideas about how to make things better, he wanted to know where the others were. I pointed to Clive, Martin and Bill. He then asked, ? so what are your ideas?? I explained about oil running out and he suggested bikes and horses. What unerring logic kids have - particularly before they get old enough to get caught up in the mating game! My previous research with 100s of kids shows that the younger they are the greener they are.
Some people just feel fed up with politics in general and don?t want to vote at all, and who can blame them when they have been betrayed so often. When told that politicians are just in it for the money I explained that I?m definitely not. To prove it, if I am elected - about which I?m feeling more and more optimistic - I undertake to give half my salary to the Green Party. I?m in it because I can?t bear to think about what?s going to happen to people, and other species, in the future.
North Cave Car Boot? They want CHANGE!
Another fine day we?ve had! We zoomed off like the Trumpton Fire Brigade to North Cave car boot sale - where we found lots of Green-minded people. Women in particular seem to understand the dire situation the old parties have got us into and the desperate need for change. People want local decision making, they are sick of being conned by politicians who don?t practise what they preach, they know the Iraq war was about oil, they know we are all being exploited by government backing big business, and they want it to stop.
They can also see that with only one of the lame old parties standing in this election the Greens have a chance to make their ideas clear and to get plenty of votes, so lots of people said they would vote for us because THEY WANT CHANGE.

Canvassing in Cottingham
The regional gang joined us locals for some serious campaigning today. People in Cottingham were very welcoming ? as ever ? and everyone we talked to was very interested.
It was great having Green Party perennial Clive Lord around. As a founder member, he?s done every Green by-election since the last glaciation and is staying ten days. He even brought his tent!
Local secretary, Martin Deane, spotted David Davis (yet again, 'by coincidence' in a constituency of about 120 square miles), and tackled him on detention and his vote for war on Iraq . Davis said he was a Privy Councillor. So that?s alright then. (One million dead, 176 British troops, a country destroyed). Davis honestly held that the war was to bring liberation and democracy to Iraq . ?It was about oil!? Martin came back, ?It was planned. The Americans wanted Iraq from day one.?
We did agree though to debate the issues sometime, so look out for an official hustings.
And hurrah! People were telling us that they had our leaflet already. The remainder will arrive by Monday - in time for the postal votes.
Feel like helping? Come on up!
shan@voice-international.net
?Oh there?s no bus from here!?
Friday 27th June, actually ? just catching up! I went to Howden today. I thought I?d garner votes on the train ? and found one! Once at ?Howden? you arrive a mile and a half from the town at a station that has seen better days. I asked someone about a bus to town: ?Oh there?s no bus from here!? So I had to plod into town! We clearly need a Green Party win to revamp public transport here!
I spoke to people around Howden marketplace and had a very enjoyable time.
We are the only other serious party contending this election and many people were interested enough to talk about their views and local life.
It struck me that if you mix red and blue and yellow ? it makes brown! So, ?the brown parties?, as I?ll call them, now have great difficulty making policies appeal to most people. And it?s because they are committed to a system that no longer works. If it ever did. We just cannot have endless growth. Full stop.
Saturday, we are in Cottingham market place from 11am onwards. We have lots of inspired visitors from around Yorkshire coming to help us!

Grey meets Green in by-election showdown
We had an enjoyable day in Cottingham market today. Cottingham has the distinction of being the largest village in England . Very positive responses from public in general once we had collared them.
A BBC Look North camera crew turned up and asked loads of questions. The interview went well, but of course they chose to show the one bit with a hesitation in it! They also got us talking with a group of people sitting nearby having cuppa. So, we got on the box with 2 other ?small parties? so that?s a plus!
We had a stall set out most of the day and gave out some mini-manifestos and all the leaflets we had and had to print up more! People talked to us very easily and the majority seemed interested in what we stood for once they got to know. David Davis appeared there too and he and I and the team had a little chat where we asked him why he?s a Tory and told him we want to open up the issues. He told us he would invite us to any events he holds and that he sees us as the only serious challenger to him. We said we certainly did intend to challenge him.
Judging by the reaction overall of the people we spoke to there was a lot of support for us just waiting to be tapped.
All papers duly in!
Wow!?fantastic support and brilliant ideas from everyone ? yes its looking really exciting now our nomination papers are accepted and the freepost leaflet is printed and on its way. We will follow up on all suggestions.
We?ll be talking with BBC Look North tomorrow . The East Riding Youth Council would like us to visit with David Davis too. Need to work on a press release now?.
11 candidates so far? more tomorrow - watch this space!
Very best
Shan, Bill and Martin

PS - Meanwhile, across the pond...
Congress' Dennis Kucinich five-hour floor speech to impeach Bush !!! 'Dennis Kucinich takes the call to impeach Bush beyond bumper-sticker slogans, laying out 35 articles of impeachment in Congress.
Kucinich's latest gambit is his introduction of articles of impeachment against President George W. Bush -- 35 of them, to be exact -- laid out in a five-hour floor speech that was likely heard by no one save the C-SPAN technicians and perhaps a few hundred viewers at home. The charges have no chance of being taken seriously in Congress, where Democratic leaders will dispose of them quickly in a parliamentary move. There is no benefit in throwing the country onto the pyre of partisan flames with Bush set to go quietly away to Crawford, Texas, in just seven more months, they reason. And this is certainly sensible.
Nonetheless, you cannot find a more complete and compelling indictment of the Bush administration than Kucinich has presented in his articles. They range from the exceedingly obvious, such as those detailed in his Article III: "Misleading the American people and members of Congress to believe Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction, so as to manufacture a false case for war," to the specious, presented in Article XII: "Initiating a war against Iraq for control of that nation's natural resources."
Kucinich gives us a bleak road map through seven years of deceptions and misjudgments, incompetence and malevolence.

I Spy a Spy on 4th July!

Dear friends,
Friday 4th July is only one month away!
You are invited to an evening do, from 5pm, to show your opposition to all things American military especially the base at Menwith Hill, the other dozen bases around the UK, the whole "Star Wars" missile system, with crucial Menwith Hill involvement - and against the continued occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan where the Americans still claim they are winning (even longer than Hillary).
Various news continues to bubble away that George W Bush could still bomb Iran despite mere months left of his rule - and Menwith Hill would once again be crucial.
Support us if you can! Best wishes,

Amazon Boo Boo and next meeting.Transition towns
Dear Transitioners
I hope you are all very well and have had chance to surf around the
transition websites and maybe read the primer.
I attended the FoE meeting last week and spoke about the approach we
intend
to take. There were some very encouraging ideas and some people wishing to
engage with the initial steering group! So sue could I ask you to
circulate
my contact details including my mobile (07946220086) to FoE members and
let
them know about the below meeting?
I have received an email from Amazon telling me I did not input my card
details correctly and therefore have not had my films dispatched (end of
suburbia etc). So I will order them from an independent distributor this
week and have them next.
Before then however I am cordially inviting anyone interested in the
steering group that could not attend last time and everyone else to ZEST
AT
7:30 ON THURSDAY THE 22ND. Zest is usually a bit quieter so we can talk,
swap some ideas and generally get to know each other.
Again it would be really useful to read the transition primer to begin
with
but if not that's ok.
Please let me know who will be coming, Chris and I will be there but it
would be good to know what size table to snag.

I hear there has been lots on Soapbox (R.Humberside) on local politics and no-one canvassing anymore. The BBC did not invite us to take part, which is a shame as we have given them lots of comments previously on all manner of issues. We did some canvassing on Marlborough Ave and were very well received. It would be a good thing to do a lot more... World Ocean Day
World Ocean Day ? Sunday the 8th of June
Join our naked photo shoot in support of marine reserves.
A recent report, published in the journal Science, identified the seas around the UK as amongst the most overexploited in the world and the marine environment around our coasts as amongst the most degraded by human activities. Many fish species are on the verge of commercial, or even actual extinction and a recent Royal Commission report recommended a total ban on all commercial fishing and other extractive activities, covering a minimum of 30% of UK waters out to 200 nautical miles. They concluded that the provision of such havens, where stocks can recover and repopulate surrounding waters, is the only way of ensuring the long-term survival of both fish stocks and of a fishing industry.
The Government has just published a draft Marine Bill, which includes some proposals for protecting the marine environment, but the measures being proposed fall far short of the minimum recommended by the Royal Commission. The Marine Conservation Society, Greenpeace, WWF, the RSPB, the Wildlife Trusts and MARINET, Friends of the Earth's marine network, are all campaigning to get the bill strengthened.
Sunday the 8th of June is World Ocean Day. To mark the day and to promote the campaign to get real protection for the UK marine environment, the MARINET Marine Reserves Campaign is organizing a naked photo shoot/media photo opportunity. We will be assembling at 1.00pm on Black Rock naturist beach, in Brighton. The theme of the action will be "they are stripping the oceans bare". Please come and join us and help to really raise this issue's profile.
The annual World Naked Bike Ride is also taking place the same weekend, on Saturday the 7th of June, including a ride in Brighton and some people might like to make a weekend of it and also take part in this.
If Brighton is too far to travel, why not join one of the other World Naked Bike Ride events and/or organize something for World Ocean Day on a beach closer to home, then let your local media know what you are doing. In addition, we will also be organizing other actions later on the summer, if you let me know that you are interested in these.
You can contact me for more information on the World Ocean Day action and on other things that you can do to help the campaign, or see the marine page of the Leicester Friends of the Earth website.
Best Wishes

40,000 strong London anti-war demo

Hi All,
if any Hullies are disappointed at the coverage of the 40,000 strong London antiwar demo. There is a Yorkshire Post article here -
http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/latest-national-news/Antiwar-demo-draws-thousands.3882716.jp
and Mo - from
http://thisisull.com - has done us proud again on a home page article with tons of pictures. Global Protests Demonstrate 15 March 2008 Trafalgar Square, London, Troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan Don't attack Iran End the siege of Gaza with Photo Gallery by Mo. Do check it out.
On a sadder note, many of you will have heard that Harry Gurevitch has passed on, a long time antiwar supporter and former maths teacher in the Hull area. March 15th would have been his 68th birthday but he died in Dove House in the early hours of the previous Saturday after a long fought blood disorder. His funeral was held last week. Many will miss him.

Green Party conference
Dear Friends,
Just back from the Green Party conference in Reading and we've made the front page of thisisull -
http://www.thisisull.com/index.html
Thanks to Mo for all the hard work on html and the photos!
It was a really good conference (and I don't say that often!) and my blurb is up too. We passed a fine, strong motion on Israel-Palestine, and an emergency motion condemning the government for leaving hundreds of thousands asylum seekers destitute and calling for immediate help. (Amnesty says 500,000). And lots more.
Familiar faces you may see include Martin Bell (ex-BBC), Mark Steel (comedian), Peter Tatchell (Green, Oxford, and former Labour MP), the Venezuelan Ambassador - impressive on his government's environment policies, Caroline Lucas, MEP, (and Principal Female Speaker)) with video of her speech. Derek Wall (Principal Male Speaker) who gave a barnstormer of a speech.
Congratulations to me for post of Editor for the Green (International Magazine and to Bill Rigby (Beverley) for being invited to basically rewrite Green Party marine policies for next time!! Who have I forgotten? Loads more, another time!
Cheers,
Martin Deane

Crafts group sessions
Hello,
It's Catie Allison here, who was trying to set up a group to make cotton shopping bags. I thought I would let you know, in case you are interested, that as an initial experiment before I do that, I am trying to set up a general, community crafts group that people would come to and bring their own craft project. I wouldn't (usually) be teaching but it would be a chance to meet other people and chat whilst taking some time out to do something creative, which to me would be very valuable!
One bonus for you would be that, although as I said, I am not strictly a teacher, if you are interested in papercrafts I can teach quilling (paper filigree) and a couple of other techniques. I can also provide a lot of scraps of pretty paper that you can have for free, and sometimes cards and other things, as my parents run a craft supplies business. My mother teaches quilling, lettering and folk art and can maybe come and teach on the odd occasion if there is enough interest.
The group would take place, probably every two weeks to begin with, but every week if enough demand. It will be held at the Recycling Unlimited office (NB not the shop), on Newland Avenue, in their very nice upstairs room, on either a Monday or a Wednesday evening - still undecided. It will be non-profit making and entirely free to you.
Please let me know if this appeals, or if you are unsure and would like to ask any questions. It would also be really helpful to know if you would prefer a Monday or a Wednesday or if it does not matter. Or if you would come but can't climb stairs please point this out. If this group kicks off and the organising of it goes smoothly then I will consider setting up other craft projects or groups that need a bit more organising, such as the bag group.
Please reply to this e-mail. c_e_allison@yahoo.co.uk
I would like ideally to start on the 11th or 13th February. Hope to hear from you, or please spread the word!
Catie Allison
