The highway patrol in the Nevada Desert were puzzled when they came across what looked like the site of an airplane crash - halfway up a cliff. Here is what happened. A man working in a military base had stolen a JATO - Jet Assisted Take Off - engine, used to give aircraft a boost on short runways. He had strapped this to his car and gone out onto the highway. He started driving, and when he had reached maximum speed ignited the engine. He almost instantly reached 300 miles per hour, and the sort of G-force only usually experienced by pilots in dog-fights, incapacitating him for the - short - remainder of the journey. About two miles later, police found where he had tried to brake - the tyres and brake disks had been melted into the asphalt. About half a mile later, the car left the ground, and flew through the air for almost one and a half miles before burying itself 3 feet into the cliff-face where it was later found. Previous winners of this award include: the sword swallower who was eating an umbrella and accidentally pressed the release catch, opening the umbrella and killing himself instantly; the man who tried to get a free drink out of a vending machine by tipping it up, only to have it fall on him, crushing him to death; and the man who cut off his own head with a chainsaw on a dare. |
