Section 2: Adding and Subtracting Rational Numbers

SCO:
B1 – Students will be able to model, solve, and create problems involving real numbers.
B2 – Students will be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide rational numbers in fractional and decimal forms, using the most appropriate method.

Suggested Materials: Masters 1.3, 1.8; scientific calculator

Focus: Students will estimate, calculate, and verify the sum and difference of rational numbers.

Activities:
- Split students into 4 groups to calculate the number of tiles on the ceiling or floor in a quadrant of the classroom. Usually this will be an irregular amount. Get students to calculate how many tiles would be needed in a class that is twice as big than their present classroom (addition)
- Do a few of the basic problems in the text, followed by the word problems. Use the Master worksheets for extra practice and to help them assess their progress.
