Section 3 & 4: Multiplying and Dividing Rational Numbers and the Order of Operations

SCO:
B1 – Students will be able to model, solve, and create problems involving real numbers.
B2 – Students will be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide rational numbers in fractional and decimal forms, using the most appropriate method.
B3 – Apply the order of operations in rational number computations.

Suggested Materials: Masters 1.4, 1.9; scientific calculator.

Focus:
Students will estimate, calculate, and verify the product and quotient of rational numbers. Students will apply the correct order of operations when evaluating expressions with rational numbers.

Activities:
Go here for a lesson relating to the order of operations
- Use Master 1.4 to review prior knowledge
- Have students bring in a recipe from a cookbook at home that has plenty of fractional values (at least 4). Get them to modify the recipe for more and less people, and rewrite the amounts needed per ingredient. Find the difference between amounts needed.
- Present an example that uses the stock market. Prepare students by getting them to get a print out of a stock sheet from a newspaper or other source
- Let students work in groups to solve the following problem from the curriculum guide:
B1.3 Clare is making a flower garden that is shaped like a right triangle. Two of the sides of the triangle are 2 m in length. a) What is the perimeter of the flower garden? b) Can one of the given sides be the side opposite the right angle? Explain why or why not.
This connection to another area of Math would help enhance student’s understanding of the interconnectivity of Mathematical concepts.
- Students should research possible careers to find the annual salary. Students should calculate hourly and bi-weekly wages. Students could enhance their knowledge of Excel by setting up a spreadsheet to analyze this problem.
- Students should prepare a couple of equations using 3 – 4 rational numbers and the knowledge of the order of operations. Then in groups, they provide the other members with an answer and the numbers used. The rest of the group had to come up with the original equation.
- Distribute Master 1.9 for self-assessment. It lets students compare integer and rational multiplication and division. It also gives students practice with the basic operations first before moving on to some of the problems from the curriculum guide.
