Born to the Gotham City branch of the Bertinelli crime family, Helena Bertinelli is the sole survivor of an attack on her family that robbed her of her parents and extended family. She traveled the world, training and learning from various people in a quest for vengeance that mirrors that of Batman’s own history. Taking up the name of the Huntress, Helena first sought out the hired gun Omerta the Silencer, the assassin responsible for killing her family. She then turned to fighting criminals of all types, especially the Mafia of Gotham.

Huntress is a much more violent hero than Batman, believing in the old “eye-for-an-eye” style of justice. Despite their many conflicts in the past, Helena still secretly wants to have the Dark Knight’s approval. Batman offered her a membership in the JLA in the hope that her inclusion would provide her with better insight than he could give into how a hero should act. It is unknown how much of an effect the JLA has had on Helena, but she has shown a definite mellowing since the time she adopted the ‘Batgirl” identity following Batman’s disappearance from No Man’s Land.
