 Zauriel was a member of the Eagle Host
of heaven for a million years as a Guardian Angel. When he fell in love with a woman he
was charged to protect, he renounced his immortality and came to Earth. Unfortunately, he
also knew the secret plans of a cadre of angels to attempt the overthrow of God. This
group, members of the Pax Dei, the Bull Host led by Asmodel, followed Zauriel to earth.
There they destroyed San Francisco in their attempt to destroy Zauriel. Thanks to the
combined efforts of the JLA and Zauriel, the angels were sent back to Heaven to continue
their schemes. Zauriel was offered membership but chose to follow his heart and seek out
the woman he loved. Unfortunately, Zauriel's joy was short lived as Asmodel returned with the backing of Neron to kill Zauriel and overthrow heaven. Neron held Shannon hostage as Asmodel killed the Martian Manhunter forcing Zauriel to "die" and confront Asmodel on the field of battle in Heaven. Zauriel triumphed thanks to the Almighty's intervention and Asmodel was cast into Hell. Shannon was returned to Earth where she was reunited with her boyfriend Jerry. Zauriel was given a new floating palace and a suit of armor by which he could keep watch over the citizens of Los Angeles thereby resuming his original mission: that of a protecting angel. Zauriel was offered membership in the JLA. Zauriel adds a degree of power to aid the JLA in confronting mystical menaces that arise. Besides the power of flight, Zauriel wields a flaming sword and has a sonic cry that can disintegrate matter. He also has enhanced strength and is fairly invulnerable.
