The planet Krypton was faced with imminent destruction. Scientist Jor-El placed his child Kal-El into a space pod and sent him to a planet with similar-looking beings where he could fit in and live a normal life: Earth. The pod narrowly escaped the planet's explosion. Some time later, Jon and Martha Kent saw what seemed to be a meteor strike while driving. Pulling over, they discovered the pod with an infant Kryptonian inside. They adopted him as their own son and gave him the name Clark. As Clark matured, he began to develop super powers: he could run faster, lift more, see farther, hear better than anyone else. He couldn't be hurt by anything he encountered. He started to be able to see through walls, fire heat rays from his eyes, and even fly! When he was old enough to strike out on his own, he moved to Metropolis and became the hero known as Superman.

For a time, Superman was not exactly the Man of Steel. Since his powers are fueled by sunlight, he lost them during The Final Night. In the process of restoring them to normal levels, he transformed into a being of energy, with abilities related to electromagnetic fields. Eventually he split into two beings, one red and one blue, each believing himself to be the original. Shortly afterward, the two Supermen merged back and he was once again the Superman everyone remembers.

RELATIONS WITH THE CORE MEMBERS:

Green Lantern - Kind of a hassle to have around, mainly because he's so inexperienced, but Superman is pleased to have Kyle training with the JLA.

Wonder Woman - Definitely appreciates Wonder Woman on the team, but he dislikes the ruthless warrior side of her that shows so often.

Flash - Superman looks at Wally and remembers the good old days when he was still Kid Flash. He's very proud of the way Flash has grown and is honored to work side-by-side with him.

Batman - Mutual admiration and distrust.

Aquaman - A little confusion here because Superman doesn't know what changed Arthur from this clean-cut, orange-clad fish-guy into this rough and tough King of the Seas with an attitude problem.

Martian Manhunter - Another hero that Superman enjoys working with but is a bit uncomfortable around because J'onn is the opposite of how Supes wants to be. Not to mention the fact that had Kal-El landed on a different planet, he may have grown up to be just like our Martian friend.
