Thousands of years ago, the Greek goddess Artemis led her fellow goddessesDemeter, Aphrodite , Athena, and Hestia to the Cavern of Souls, where they reincarnated the spirits of women killed by men's aggression as a race of immortal warriors, the Amazons. Eventually the Amazons settled on the island Themyscira, cut off from the rest of the world. Hippolyta, queen of the Amazons, asked that the spirit of her unborn daughter be reincarnated as well. Hippolyta formed a body out of clay, and the goddesses (along with Hermes) reincarnated her and granted her special powers so that she would one day stand against Ares. Diana grew up, and was of age when the Amazons held a contest to choose a champion and ambassador. She won the contest and the right to become Wonder Woman, Themyscira's ambassador to the outside world. She soon found herself acting as protector as well, battling the machinations of Ares as well as more mundane super-villains, eventually joining the Justice League and even leading one incarnation. Hippolyta began having portentous dreams about the death of Wonder Woman, arranged for a new contest, and arranged for Diana to lose to Artemis, one of a sister tribe of Amazons. Artemis was killed, as foretold (though she was brought back from the underworld), and Diana once again became Wonder Woman (though when she learned of her mother's treachery, a rift appeared between them). The dreams came true after all, when Diana was killed by Neron, and the gods brought her soul to Olympus to become the Goddess of Truth. In penance, Hippolyta took on the role of Wonder Woman, even traveling back in time to fight alongside the original Justice Society of America, but Diana's refusal to remain aloof from the mortal world led the gods to banish her to Earth, and Diana has been able to take up the mantle again.
