Noli me tangere (Prologue by Kaibigan kastila)

   El texto que sigue es un resumen de algunos de los capítulos de la gran obra de Rizal, Noli me tangere.

   Como tal resumen, muchos serán los defectos que en él se podrán encontrar, y soy el primero en lamentar no poder ofrecer las cuidadas descripciones de personajes, fiestas, lugares y costumbres que Rizal nos ofrece. Ruego perdón por ello, pero espero que todos me comprendan cuando les diga que mi pretensión ha sido dar a conocer, a los filipinos estudiantes de español, al menos una parte de esta novela en la lengua en que fue escrita originalmente para que practiquen y amplien, con ella, sus conocimientos de castellano. (Y que, tanto filipinos como hispanohablantes en general, accedan -merced al interés que en ellos pueda despertar este resumen- a su lectura integra mediante las publicaciones en papel).

   Like such summary, many mistakes will be found in it, and I am the first one in being sorry not to be able to offer the well-taken care of descriptions of personages, celebrations, places and customs that Rizal shows to us. I apologize for it, but I hope that you all understand me When I tell you that all my pretension has been to let know the Filipinos students of Spanish, at least one part of this novel in the language in which it was written originally so that you practice and you can to enlarge, with it, its knowledge of Castilian. (And that, as much Filipinos as Spanish speaking people in general, accedes - thanks to the interest that in them can wake up this summary to its integral reading by means of publications in paper).

   Deseo que este resumen muestre, no obstante, la riqueza del texto de Rizal, su asombroso dominio de la lengua española y su vasta cultura. También, que ayude a comprender lo que fueron los últimos años de la presencia española en las Islas, presencia eminentemente religiosa (pocos militares y pocos civiles españoles poblaron las islas) que condicionó incluso la extensión del castellano, porque nuestros religiosos no querían que los filipinos lo aprendiesen (aunque, por supuesto, el hecho de no hablarse hoy allí se debe a la ocupación norteamericana de Filipinas, que lo extinguió al suprimir su enseñanza en escuelas, institutos y universidades).

    I hope that this summary shows, however, the wealth of the text of Rizal, its amazing dominion of the Spanish language and its vast culture. As well, to help to understand what were the last years of the Spanish presence in the Islands, presence eminently religious (few Spanish military and few Spanish civilians populated the islands) that conditioned even the extention of the Castilian, because our monks did not like that the Filipinos ones to learn it (although, of course, the fact of not being spoken there nowdays, it is due to the North American occupation of the Philippines, that extinguish when suppressing its teaching in schools, highschools and universities).

   Que en el joven Crisóstomo se vea al propio autor, clamando por unas Filipinas libres, pero orgullosas de su cultura hispana, y señalando -a lo largo de los más de sesenta capítulos que componen la obra- los caminos para lograrlo. ¡Por manifestar tan elementales ideas le fue arrebatada su vida!

    That in the Crisóstomo young person it is seen the own author, crying out for a free Philippines, but proud of its Hispanic culture, and appointing - throughout much of the sixty chaptress that compose the work- the ways to obtain it. For showing such elementary ideas his life was taken away!
