 About Us

Our Society has received a Meade ETX 90mm telescope from Permission To Dream of US. And we are using it to show the celestial wonders to the school kids and the public. Currently we are organizing such programs for Occidental Public School, Anamnagar, Kathmandu and some other schools and colleges of and out of the valley.

A launch pad to Cosmos for Nepalese youth
Astronomy has always been a matter of interest for all the people of the world. Not only the earthly research and mysteries have attracted the people but the space and its mysteries entangled with the fantasies also have become a matter of growing concern. Space, heavenly bodies, though millions of miles away from the earth the scientific inventions have made communication possible and scientists are able to collect different information about Space and the heavenly bodies. But the more scientists learn the more mysterious the questions become.

The discoveries in the explanation of life and the cosmos are inspiring awe and wonder. Space is infinite encompassing an infinite number of galaxies with an infinite number of stars with infinite number of mysteries yet to be solved. So, with a view to exchange information about the space, we, the youth of Nepal have established an organization “KOSMANDU” in order to meet the curiosity, and interest of Nepalese youth towards the cosmos. Our sole intention is to create awareness about the space and aim at the youth who have similar interest in Astronomy. It is our small effort to promote astronomical studies and develop a wider scope in astronomy in Nepal.

Our plans and Objectives

DEVELOPING AWARENESS AND INTEREST.
KOSMANDU aims at creating awareness and curiosity about the space. It is a medium for the young enthusiastic youth to express and exchange their views knowledge and ideas relating to Astronomy. We target at obtaining current information from different sources and sharing it with our members (we do have latest news and press releases on our website). Keeping in view the growing interest of Nepalese youth towards Astronomy, this organization is established in order to obtain, assemble and share the current astronomical information so that we can generate skilled, enthusiastic Nepali astronomer in the future.

CONDUCTING SEMINARS AND INTERACTION PROGRAMS
Interactions help to enrich the skills and knowledge. It is through interactions and discussions ideas can be formulated, so we have meetings every weekend on Saturdays. We also hope to organize seminars with some of the cosmologists and astronomers to discuss and learn things about Cosmos and the life. We are also planning for Video conferences with students and Amateur Astronomers and even scientists around the world.

CONDUCTING TELESCOPE VIEWING PROGRAMS
Our Society has received a Meade ETX 90mm telescope from Permission To Dream of US. And we are using it to show the celestial wonders to the school kids. Currently we are organizing such programs for Occidental Public School, Anamnagar, Kathmandu and some other schools and colleges of the valley. We also have observation sessions for the public. In later days we also hope to reach some schools out of the valley.

WE ARE ENVIRONMENTALLY AWARE
The world is passing through 'environmental crisis' that has been created by us humans. We cannot think of knowing the secrets of the Cosmos until we really care for the future. We participate deeply in saving our planet for the future generations so that they will someday fully understand the cosmos.

Brief Introduction

KOSMANDU ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY (or simply KOSMANDU) was founded on 23rd October 2003 by some of the high school students interested in Astronomy. This society has an objective of developing the astronomical studies in Nepal.
Exploring the Universe is the most exciting and breathtaking experience for anybody as it has so many mysteries unsolved. Human beings are such curious creatures that they even talk about extraterrestrial life. They are so much creative that they have already stepped on the moon; are planning manned missions to many planets and also outside solar system missions; they have already sent unmanned spacecrafts to many solar planets and deep space journeys outside the solar system. They are talking about contact with aliens millions of light years away. They are using radio telescopes to learn the physical composition of the Cosmos.
Nepal being a developing country has not developed much in Astronomy. There are a few astronomers and cosmologists in Nepal some working in local Institutions and some abroad. Some planning have been made by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Ronast and some other institutions for setting up an Observatory and a planetarium here in Nepal. Tribhuvan University has started a new opportunity to students of Nepal to study Astronomy. Valmiki campus, already giving Astrology education to its students, is using an old telescope. But these are not enough for the 21st century. This century needs a powerful manpower of Astronomers, Scientists, engineers, technologists and technicians with space flight centers and high-tech observatories.
It’s a dream too far for the people of Nepal until they start long-term projects for faster growths of Astronomy and Aerospace technology in Nepal.
KOSMANDU hopes to start long-term projects as only a  ‘high school student’s organization’ because we know it’s never too early to start.
