2002 Season
Once again, Coach Young guider her team into the
post-season. With eight seniors on the roster, a
lofty expectation of a State championship was a bit
much for the team to handle. A sweep over Vicksburg
and a 7th inning rally for a split with Natchez gave
the Lady Vikes a second place finish in the District
and a road trip to Biloxi. An extra inning 1 run
loss in game three ended their season on a down note
and a season record of 17-10. Despite the
disappointment the Lady Vikes had a good season
winning the River City Classic and Clinton
Invitational.
2001 Season
Coach Young, last year's Vicksburg Post
Coach-of-the-Year, once again successfully lead her
team into the playoffs. A sweep of Vicksburg and
Natchez also earned a second consecutive Division
Championship and home-field advantage in the first
round of the playoffs. Along the way they also won
the River City Classic, the Lady Vikes' Invitational
and a second place finish at the Brookhaven
Invitational. During the course of the season
7 different players were named "Who's Hot"
by the Vicksburg Post. Compiling a 24-7 record, the
Lady Vikes entered the state playoffs eyeing the
state championship.
A first round victory was achieved with a quick
sweep over Wayne County by the scores of 11-1 and
12-5. Round two took the Clarion Ledger pre-season
Region 2 favorite Lady Vikes to the Region 4
favorite and defending State champion, Moss Point.
Home field advantage proved to be too much as the
Lady Vikes fell in two games and completed their
season with a 26 - 9 record. Moss Point went on to
repeat as State Champions.
Lady Vikes Prominent in 2001
Postseason Honors
[02/26/02] State All-tourney Team - A
sterling offensive performance in the State playoffs
netted Lyn Strawn 1st-team selection to the State
All-Tourney Team. Senior Marilyn Landers completed
an outstanding high school slow-pitch career
with her Second-Team selection.
[01/06/02] All County - Having led the
Lady Vikes in several offensive categories and a
trip into the second round of the State Playoffs,
the Vicksburg Post named Marilyn Landers as its
County Player of the Year for a second consecutive
year. Strength of play by the team was also
recognized with over half of this year's All-County
selections coming from the Lady Vikes' roster. They
were; Katie Barnett, Ashley Chaney, Cookie Johnson,
Anna Mitchell and Lyn Strawn.
[12/11/01] All-District selections -
Despite movement to South State (Division VI,
District 6) the Lady Vikes earned their second
consecutive Division title. Given their strength of
schedule and tournament records it came as no
surprise that members of the high-powered Lady Vikes
were prominent in the All-District selections. The
five Lady Vikes receiving honors were: Senior
shortstop Marilyn Landers, junior 1st baseman Ashley
Chaney, junior leftfielder Lyn Strawn, junior
left-centerfielder Katie Barnett, and freshman
right-centerfielder Cookie Johnson. Visit the Honors
Page for a complete list of team and individual
achievements this year.
2000 Lady Vikes
"Home of the North State
Champions"
Coming off a losing season and less four
starters, few envisioned the success achieved by
this year's team. However, Coach Young was clearly
among the minority assigning a Division Championship
as the team goal. Quite a task given their youth.
With one senior (Heather Barnes), three juniors and
five sophomores starting regularly, the Lady Vikes
fulfilled the Coach Young's goal and more. Once
again in the play-offs, the Lady Vikes went on to
win both the first and second round playoff series
to advance to North State. Their berth in the final
four was the farthest any Lady Vikes softball team
had advanced in a State Tournament. By winning the
tournament opener over Grenada the Lady Vikes
captured the school's first North State Slow-pitch
Championship. Although they dropped their final two
games, they have plenty to be proud of with a 25 -
14 record and an 3rd place overall finish in State. |
