Van VonHunter volume 1 by Mike Schwark and Ron Kaulfersch, Tokyopop

Van VonHunter started life as a webcomic, and it still exists as a webcomic. As opposed to other webcomics that have found their way to print, however, this book is an all-original work, rather than a collection of stuff from the website. The story in this book takes place 3 years after the events described in the webcomic. Interestingly enough, the webcomic isn't done yet by any means, but since this is a silly story, that doesn't really matter!

If you have any experience with The Slayers, you will know what to expect here, as this story is high-fantasy swords and sorcery, but it is about as unserious as you will find. Our hero fights evil wherever he may find it, but he isn't necessarily good at identifying it once he finds it. Sometimes he doesn't even remember who he is or where his home is, or what it is even his home in the first place. And his sidekick isn't much better, as she has amnesia and can't remember who she is or where she came from. It's all quite odd, but if you have experience with traditional fantasy stories, especially as filtered through various manga and anime over the years, you will be right at home. The humor is often lowbrow, but it always elicits a chuckle (from me, anyway), so if you like fantasy that doesn't take itself seriously, give this title a chance.
