Robert Matthew Fisher served in the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) during World War I. Recently, I came into possession of an old family photo album (for just long enough to scan everything inside) containing a lot of postcard photos he sent home during that time. Some of which have given me real clues as to where he served, including a photo of the Camp itself and the nearby Hospital.
I also suspect, from several of the photos in the album, and the comments written on the backs of them, that he served in the army at a younger age in the East Kent Regiment. While I have yet to actually prove it, the front page of Robert's Attestation Paper indicates that he served in the East Kent Militia at some prior date. The back page also gives a simple physical description and a couple of interesting facts about him. (Thanks to my sister Lise for locating these - I hadn't been back to check the Archives site in months.) Pending further research, I've posted a selection of photos from those he sent home and a couple of others from the same album. Where there was something written on the back of the photo, I've noted this in double quotes. The photo to the left I suspect was taken at home some time after the War, if only because I believe he looks older than in most of the others. I'm not sure if the left breast pocket was undone or if the button was missing. |
