The Buffs

I suspect that Robert spent some time in the army prior to World War I, in the East Kent Regiment (The Buffs), to be exact.  The three photos here are the original basis for that suspicion. His Attestation Paper (front page, back page) tends to bear that out, listing the fact of prior military service in the East Kent Militia, even if it don't explain two of these photos.

Click on any of the photos to see a larger version. E-mail me if you'd like a larger one still. I have them all scanned at 200-300 dpi.

"Bob's old regiment."

This is the card that gave me the first hint, early in the album.  The handwriting on the back is different than on those Robert himself wrote on, but it looks very similar to samples of his wife's, Grace, that I've come across.  I'm tentatively dating this card as pre-WWI as the last specific action listed, Paardeberg, refers to a battle in 1900 as part of the Boer War, and the latest date on the card is 1902. If someone can be a little more accurate than that, I'd appreciate a quick note .

While Robert isn't in this photo, he had some attachment to it as it's still in a photo album more than ninety years later.  Regimental pride, perhaps? Or maybe he had a brother or cousin also serving who was on the team. Can anyone identify any of the people in this photo?

A photograph of a war memorial to the dead of the VIII Division of the South African Field Force, dated 1900-1901.  This photo could benefit from some cleaning to improve the outline of the monument visible above the hills in the background.  I don't know the location of this memorial. I'd really like to. (Hint, hint.)
