Portraits of

Charles McHardy and Janet Bowman,
and Family

The following photographs and research notes are passed on by Alistair Duncan of Canada.

Charles McHardy (1806-1879) and Janet Bowman (1804-1873)

Portrait Photo of Charles McHardy and Janet Bowman

According to the info I have a “new house” was built for them in 1857. Charles' parents were James McHardy and Anne McHardy, the remains of their house being behind the new one built for Charles and Janet. Andrew [McHardy of Corriehoul] has noted that Janet is wearing a paisley shawl. The photo is annotated Wm. Thomson, Exchange Street, Aberdeen.

Photo on right is of a younger Charles. This is a copy, no annotation on reverse.

Margaret McHardy (1842-1884)
Portrait Photo of Margaret McHardy

Margaret McHardy ... was my great grandmother. She married Alexander Brown and lived at Coul of Newe. Have not tracked Alexander Brown down quite yet, believe he may have been born in Keig. He is recorded on various documents as a shepherd or flockmaster. Annotation or reverse J. Ashley Retford

Anne McHardy (b. 1839) and William Cowan

Anne McHardy..., Margaret's older sister. Believe she married a William Cowan and moved to New Zealand. Possibly Oamaru Station. The back of the photo shows her to be Mrs. Wm. Cowan, however other notes I have say she married a Charles Cowan. Annotation on reverse A. Dinnie, 3 Landstane Pl, Aberdeen. There is also a description of Anne, assume a larger copy of photo was going to be done in pastels.

Elizabeth McHardy, cousin of Charles McHardy. Annotated G & W Morgan,
5 Market St, Aberdeen.

Bowman and Brown

I asked if anyone could identify these two, simply known as “Bowman and Brown” to Alistair. Les McLaren responded via email as given below. Please note that Les suspects that the genealogies in “The Highlanders of Scotland” are not one-hundred percent reliable, so, as always, be cautious with the information. — Sandra
Portrait of James Bowman and William Brown
“On the left is James Bowman, born at the Killoch, Invercauld, March 12th 1814, one of three sons and nine daughters of John Bowman (died 1866, aged 99) and his wife Margaret MacHardy (died 1839, aged 58). She was one of five sons and four daughters of Allaster MacHardy, tenant of Auchallater, Braemar, and his wife, Jean MacGregor. William Bowman was the grandfather...of James...tenant of the farm of Auchtaven (often spelled Auchtavan), and his wife was Janet Cattanach.
“On the right is William Brown, brother of the famous John Brown, Queen Victoria's friend. These details (I can't vouch for their accuracy) came from a book of reproductions of a series of pictures painted by Kenneth MacLeay for Queen Victoria. Margaret's brother William features in another painting, and her nephew Charles MacHardy in another. The book is a large format paperback, “The Highlanders of Scotland,” published in 1986 by the Haggerston Press. I believe there might be a more recent edition. The pictures are even better in colour!”
