The document's role

This document will attempt to gather information covering a wide range of issues to explain the purpose behind the database.

It will also provide some explanation into constraints and difficulties that need to be resolved.

There is a scarcity of Australian information.  However, there is considerable information available from overseas, particularly American and Canadian sources.

We propose to post a list of publications, research material and reports as links to visit.

Click on the link to publications along the side to see the list.  These will be added to from time to time.

the DATABASE objectives.

MCSCAN Australia asks Victims, their Carers and families,  to support us in this project by forwarding the requested information.   We believe the end result will result in pressure being brought on the governments to take action.

We also ask Victims  if they would be willing to include separately a short summary of their experiences of MCS e.g. a day/week in the life of a victim and their family to show how badly it effects the lives of all.

These database stories will be shown on this site.    To protect identities and confidentiality all will be given an alpha-numeric name, instead of personal name.

We will be constantly posting progress reports on this site as they come to hand.

Check periodically on the Progress Report link along the side.

DOCUMENT'S PURPOSE IN AIDING THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE DATABASE

The purpose of the document is to consider the wide range of issues that relate to the condition knows as MCS (multiple Chemical Sensitivity) that need to be considered.

Unless there is a greater understanding of what causes the condition it is fruitless approaching any authority with a view of gaining support, research, etc.

MCSCAN Australia sees a role to consider any way that will bring it to the attention of governments for consideration and appropriate action, e.g.:-

  • Gather information to submit to government for appropriate planning and research.

  • Request that government funds adequate and relevant unbiased research.

  • Develop appropriate strategies for research, administration, regulation, monitoring and other related actions.

  • Ensure environment toxicology become a major university stream, linked into both science and medicine.

  • Most importantly, ensure that the MCS condition is treated as a chemically induced injury and not as a disease or illness.

  • Once established as an injury it will eliminate the objectives and arguments from vested interests, who do not want it recognized as such, for fear of opening the doors to litigation and compensation claims.

  • It should be noted here that there are already cases before the courts and some claims have been settled out of court.

  • More importantly, clarification of the condition will aid the development of useful policy and strategies that will be socially responsible and fair.

  • Planning and strategy will need to include support mechanisms that will aid the Victims, their families or Carers and will minimize their suffering and pain.

  • Policies need to include action under civil, criminal and antidiscrimination law to protect the victims from discrimination and harassment.

  • These polices need to be enshrined in every government departments, public and private sectors.

  • provide for a community education programme to educate the community about the use of chemicals and ways the will assist the condition e.g. MCS can be avoided, reduced or eliminated.

  • Implementation will require extensive staff training, development of protocols in Hospitals/Clinics, community centres, etc.

  • Educations that will ensure the Victims are not discriminated against and also allow them the right to live socially and free as anyone else within the community.
