Planning this document AND DATABASE

When asked to develop this project, I had discussions with Victims and support groups.

After some thought, and  being aware I am neither a scientist or a medically trained person, I chose to write as a layperson, with a layperson's perception of what MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivity) was.

My approach was based on the belief that we are making representation to people who, like ourselves, do not necessarily have a science or medical back ground.

I would even dare make a comment that many within the scientific and medical community and perhaps even the legal fraternity, who are just as confused over this problem as we.

The initial task for this document is to consider:

1. Providing a simple document to be read and understood by laypeople.
2. Consider what issues would influence the sort of information we are seeking.
3. How wide a range of issues do we need to address, also influenced my decision to write as a layperson.

Writing from a layperson’s perception of what MCS is, of course, leaves it open to interpretation and criticism of a layperson’s terminology.

However, I would emphasize the point that it is written by a layperson with a layperson’s understanding for basically laypeople to read and try and understand the problems.

Other attachments or links will lead to the scientific and medical information.

SCIENTIFIC AND MEDICAL PUBLICATIONS AND RESEARCH

Those with scientific and medical qualifications will want more information.  This is provided where necessary as separate documents or as attachments.

Most of them will be links on MCSCAN Australia's web site to the various scientific and medical publications.

More links will be added from time to time.

These will be form a backup support for the document based, on scientific and medical forums, journals and other research.

The Web site will also provide links to the various support groups and self help information where it is applicable.

NOTE:  As information gained from these sites are beyond our control and as we do not wish to imply we are experts, the links are for your information to be used as you judge.

THE IMPORTANCE OF WORKING TOGETHER

Preferring a positive approach and comments, rather than negative ones, MCSCAN Australia therefore believes, it is in the interests of everyone to support this initiative.

The alternative may find that MCS Victims will become one of the lost and forgotten people in our society.

The problem is one of urgency!

It is a problem requiring urgent attention, from policy developers, at all government levels.

It also has implications for industry and commencers as it will affect productivity and the pool of experienced and skilled labour.

Many members of this experienced and skilled workforce are themselves now victims of this 20th Century condition and this becomes a major cost to industry itself.

While for emphasis, some information will be repeated in some form or other throughout this document.

This has been deliberate to stress the importance for sound planning; policy development and to implement strategy to assist, support and monitor the use of chemicals in Australia.

Sound policy and strategies with appropriate infrastructure requires urgent attention, from policy developers, at all government levels.

There is little time left to waste time between party politics or State versus Federal delegations. It must be a joint operation.

Once the database it set up, it can form a basis for the provision of research, competent control, management and support in the use of chemicals in Australia.
