Procedures

“BE” A SUCCESSFUL STUDENT

1.   BE on time!  Report directly to the classroom; do not socialize in the hallway.  If you must secure items from your locker, that is not an excuse.  When the bell rings, you must be in your assigned seat with your materials on your desk.  You are NOT on time if the bell rings as you are walking through the door!  All tardies (and absences) will be recorded.  Three tardies equals a referral to the office (SCHOOL POLICY).  Every tardy after that equals another referral.  PLAN AHEAD!

2.   BE prepared!  You must bring your (1) science textbook (Universe, Chemistry, Sound/Light, or Motion), (2) your science folder, and (3) a PENCIL with you to class everyday.  Your book must be covered and your are NOT allowed using pen!  Any day that your are not prepared (including no book, no folder, no pencil, no bookcover, no homework), your name will be recorded in a journal.  If your are unprepared for class on three occasions, you will be referred to the office.  IF YOU USE PEN, YOU WILL GET NO CREDIT FOR THE ASSIGNMENT!  You may want to purchase a three ring binder AND crayons, colored pencils, …; art supplies will be provided, but you must share.

3. BE organized!  Place all vocabulary, outlines, worksheets, homework assignments, tests, etc., into your folder.  Your folder can be a valuable resource when preparing for exams.  Also, record all grades on your grade sheet (you can earn extra credit at the end of the nine weeks).   The grade sheet will help you keep track of your current grade AND any missed assignments.

4.   BE AWARE!  Complete all assignments!  If you do not complete an assignment on time, you will be given a “zero” for the assignment (this includes trying to finish the assignment right before you are to hand it in).  You may, then, complete the work for the end of the day or the following day.  Depending on the quality of your work, the “zero” may be changed into an appropriate grade (half-credit will usually be awarded for late assignments).  If you do not complete the work for the following day, you will receive NO credit.

If you are absent, YOU MUST ASK WHAT YOU MISSED AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS!  That is your responsibility!  If your are absent on a day that an assignment is given, you must complete the work for the next day.  If the absence was extended, you may be given some extra time to complete the work.  If you are absent the day that an assignment is DUE, it must be handed-in on the next school day!  If you are absent the day before an exam, you will take the exam with the remainder of the class.  Make-up tests are given only to students who miss several days of school before an exam.  If the school considers an absence ILLEGAL, you will receive no credit for all of the work that you missed during those days.

5.   BE responsible!  For vocabulary assignments (W/D/I), you will receive one point for each definition and one point for each colored picture.  If you have pictures drawn, but no color, you will receive “half-credit” for the assignment.  For section review assignments, you must write a complete sentence that includes part of the question in the answer.  If you do not write a “complete-sentence” answer, you will lose points.  All papers are to have a M/L/A heading!  If you do not use an M/L/A heading, you may lose points.  IF YOU DO NOT HAVE YOUR NAME ON YOUR PAPER, YOU WILL GET NO CREDIT!  If you are caught copying another student’s work, you and the person that you are copying from will get no credit for the assignment.  If you are caught “cheating” in class, YOU will receive no credit for your work.

6.   BE respectful!  Treat others the way that you want to be treated.  Respect should be shown to your teachers, fellow classmates, younger students, administration, visitors, …  Keep your hands to yourself.  Raise your hand if you have a question.  Do not ask meaningless questions (CLASS CLOWN?).  Any inappropriate behaviors that limit the learning of others will not be tolerated!  They will be recorded in a journal and referred to the office.

7.   BE SMART!  Follow all school rules (dress properly, no candy/gum, …).  You will be referred to the office if you are caught chewing gum or eating candy (this includes mints).  The only candy that you are allowed to eat in this class is the candy that is given to you by me.  Use the restroom for emergencies ONLY!  If restroom use becomes a problem, you will be referred to the office/nurse.  Seventh period students should use the restroom during their LUNCH period.

8.  BE active (in AND out of the classroom)!  Take notes in class.  Ask questions.  Volunteer.  READ!  Play a sport.  Play an instrument!  Sing in the chorus!

9.  BE A GOOD ROLE MODEL!  BE CREATIVE!  BE YOURSELF!  BE MATURE!  BE A GOOD FRIEND!  BE A GOOD STUDENT!  BE THOUGHTFUL/COURTEOUS!

10. BE SUCCESSFUL!  Everyone in this room can EARN an “A” in science.  Follow the rules and   do what is asked of you.  It is a new year; it is your last year of middle school.  Don’t wait until next year; the FUTURE starts now!
