The Royals in the Realm of Legend
In the beginning, or very close to it, was Sutekh the Destroyer. He saw that the forum was filled with weekly polls and threads on who was the best, or the toughest, or the most kindly, or the best looking female and the list went on.. and on. In those early days, he tired of such threads and endless votes and created a system whereby a Queen of the realm would be chosen. A Queen who would rule over all (subject to certain laws and rules) for a round of the game and then another would be chosen in her place.
As time has passed, the process has developed and grown and since those times the addition of a King has taken place as well as some well-defined duties that must be followed if one is royalty.
Sutekh was the first ‘Chancellor’ responsible for overseeing the voting and nomination processes as well as holding the royals to task (and their charges) if the Laws were broken. Since those times, others have held that role – Sutekh passed the reins to Pierce who eventually moved on too and Magalya2 has become the current Chancellor.
Towards the end of a round, a nominations thread is opened and those who believe that someone is worthy of the title will post their nominations in the relevant thread. The list of potential Queens is placed in a ‘Mirror Mirror nominations’ thread and the list of potential Kings in the ‘Sword in the Stone nominations’’ thread.
After a week, those nominations are closed and replaced with two new threads. These are polls designed so that all may visit the Royal Court and make their vote for those they wish to be King and Queen for the game round. At this time, it is also common for a number of candidate nomination threads to appear so that any questions may be asked and answers by any and all warlords who choose to do so. Those who are nominated must be members of the community who have the realm’s best interests at heart. They must be willing and able members both able to follow the rules of the site and the Laws that have been lain down by the Chancellors that have served. There are many duties involved in ‘ruling’ as King or Queen and these are part of the underlying basics.
At the end of the week of polls, the new candidates are chosen and become the King and Queen for the new round. At this time, they will announce those that they have decided will be their Valkyrie (for the King) and Champion (for the Queen).
Once the new King and Queen have been ‘crowned’, the Valkyrie and Champion will begin to prepare a formal Ball. Generally, all are invited to such events for it is part of the Royalties duties to ensure the realm’s community is kept happy.
What are the duties of the Royals?
The King and Queen have a number of duties, as do their chosen Valkyrie and Champion. The latter are there primarily to serve their Royal Charge to the best of their ability and they are responsible for their general wellbeing. If the Queen is unhappy, it is the duty of the Champion to return her smile, for example.
The King and Queen’s duties are well detailed in the Royal Court forum but to give just an indication for some of their responsibilities:
- Keep the Lords and Ladies of the realm happy and take part in the realm’s activities, where possible
- Make new members (apprentices) feel welcomed and wanted in the forum & game as well as give advice and guidance to those wishing to build up their armies if they need it
- Answer to all members of the realm, be they the Chancellor, the Immortals or the people.
- Instruct realm members on proper forum etiquette and assist with forum games during special realm events
- Follow all forum and game rules
- Consult with the Immortals in the case of potential realm hostility, sadness or ill health (clan wars excluded unless they become overly personal and against the spirit of the game)
- Defend the realm, the laws, those Immortals who are responsible for ensuring those laws are kept and those who are suffering because of the actions of lawbreakers
Further details of the laws and duties of the King and Queen, as well as those the Valkyrie and Champion must follow, are pinned to the Royal Court board and can be viewed at any time once you have become a member of the realm of Legend (registered) but you may need to show your royal pass to access the board (relog in). In addition to the traditions that should be upheld, the rules also contain the details on the proper procedures that should be followed if a member of the realm feels that the duties are not being carried out by the royals as they should be. The duties of the chancellor are also included in this document for completeness.
How do I become Royalty?
While it might seem exciting at first glance (after all, who wouldn’t want to gain such a title and hold such prestige as a member of the realm of Legend?) there is a lot of work involved and many laws and rules to follow. It is not always an easy path to follow and it helps to read and reread the duties that are involved in such roles. A round generally lasts around three months or so and that can be a long time to hold a position of responsibility. However, it can be a very rewarding one as well depending on what you choose to do and how much you decide to get involved as part of the community.
The main thing to remember as a member of the Lords of Legend community is that you are one of many using the forum and most of those won’t have been King or Queen either. Some will have been long time forum members or game members but that is not to say that it is impossible, just difficult.
Different people will have different opinions on the roles and how best to gain those roles. It is better to focus on being a positive influence in the forum. Make friends, be polite and generally respectful and become known as part of the community. The role will almost certainly go to someone who is relatively well known and liked, as well as someone deemed able to keep the realm of Legend’s interests at heart.
Just enjoy participating in the community as a whole. It’s where you’ll find the majority of the fun and games taking place and who knows, perhaps after a round or two you’ll see your name nominated alongside the others. The feeling of that in itself is something to truly appreciate whether or not you become a future King or Queen and at that stage you will feel the same way.
