Love to Hate Him

Some bad guys do their thing so well you can't help but hope they'd win sometimes. Some villains are so good at being bad you root for them instead of those nauseatingly cutesy goody two-shoes protagonists. When they lose (as they eventually must) you tend to feel for them. Some antagonists are so bad they're good, and they're sometimes BETTER than the good guys.

Not Quite Standard Disclaimer:
The images here were gleaned from many different sites--wherever I happened to see a good picture of the Leading Man in question...In some cases I had to chop him out of a bigger picture, brighten the image itself--anything to get HIS solo mug up there. If I'm using your image and you don't like what I've done to it, tell me about it and I'll take it out. Remember: all images here belong solely to their creators.

All guys are plugged in ALPHABETICALLY per page, and in the order I received the suggestions, to avoid the reams of hate-mail I can imagine for inadvertently maligning *your* Leading Man.

Katsuhiko Jinnai
Katsuhiko Jinnai
from the OAV El Hazard

Erin says:
Heck, sue me, but I think Jinnai is a REALLY fun character. Why not?=) He's nuts, he has the second best lines in the dub (after Mr. Fujisawa ) and, I'm sorry, but his dub voice really gets into his role, and does a better job with that laugh then certain, much more highly-paid Japanese voice actors...even when the writers threw it in at totally innapropriate places. As for not being "super-powerful and cool", that's just what's nice about Jinnai! I get so sick of those guys after awhile..I mean, heck, if I could shoot lasers out of my eyes, I'd be a great villian, too. =) If that's what floats yer boat, it's great, but some people think the whole "super-powerful tragic villian" thing gets old after awhile. I think Jin-chan does pretty darn good for some 17 year old high school kid thrown unexpectedly into another dimesion.

He manages to take the formerly-pathetic Bugrom army and turn it into such a threat that Roshtaria feels it's neccessary to use the Eye of God to stop him, even AFTER he's lost control of Ifurita he tricks the enemy into leading him to a weapon no one's managed to find for centuries. He's got better tactical skills then most older, more experienced people in El Hazard (he even manages to undermine Galus aka "the pedophile's" plans TWICE), and when something goes wrong, he DOES something about it, instead of just sittin' around like the good guys do.

If Jinnai sucks as a villian, I'm sorry, but the heroes must really, REALLY suck, since it was so hard for them to defeat him (mind you, this IS a possibility). Jinnai may be obnoxious, but he was a good obstacle. At least, I thought so...otherwise, I wouldn't like "El Hazard" as much as I do. Ah, well, I'm sure tons of people will write in to say how much they hate him, which is just terrific. =) Aren't you SUPPOSED to enjoy hating the guy? And as for being smarter then Makoto...he is. Why? Because almost everyone is. Mind you, I LOVE Makoto...

Ghaleon
from the RPG videogame series Lunar

Craig says:
Ghaleon is from the RPG videogame series "Lunar", which boasts anime cinemas along with the game itself. It was on the doomed Sega/Mega CD console, but it was the best selling game on it. A great remake of the first game is soon to come out for PSX in December, of 1998, if all goes well.

Ghaleon... He was one of the four saviors of the magical world of Lunar, and was one of the most popular, thanks to his great charisma and cultured attitude. Unfortunately...he decends down the dark path of power and evil for complex reasons (these reasons varied from the original series to the remake) and soon prepares to conquer the world... (play the game to find out why)

Why is he so cool? He is extremely cultured and displays a sardonic attitude of scorn and contempt, confident in his incredible power, testing the heroes' mettle. He has one of the best evil laughs ever. It is obvious though, that his darkly humorous front cloaks an agonized heart and torn conscience. Nevertheless, he carries forth his misguided system of beliefs to a sad conclusion...

And then...1000 years later...he is resurrected... But let's not spoil everything.

Seta Soujiro - donated by Lady Tenku
Seta Soujiro
from the series Rurouni Kenshin

Lady Tenku says:
Hello I was just browsing through your page and I'm surprised that you missed the on of the cutest villains of all. You missed the always smiling and happy killer, TenKen (Heaven's Sword) Seta Soujiro from Rurouni Kenshin! Although it's had to call him a villain, he's just a misguided youth. He follows the motto "the strong survive and the weak die" and suppresses all of his emotions except happiness. He's soo adorable and if he didn't "break" during his final battle with Kenshin, he could have beaten him, after all, he beat Kenshin before!
