Aren't these cuties the absolute limit? They are SOOO CUTE! I was on the verge of calling this site "anime pets" or something, but I thought it too insulting for these intelligent (if only slightly articulate) characters to be termed "pets." (In these pages, pet is the term of choice for non-Critter creatures, with one exception =)

Any creature that hangs around with the leading characters is a qualified critter. What sets them apart from other creatures in anime is, first of all, their singular ability to turn a one word vocabulary into a conversation: Mokona's "Puupupupuu!" or Ryo-oki's meowing. This doesn't mean that all of them are monosyllabic--some are very expressive, after all. Their other distinguishing trait is that they aren't normal creatures per se--just look at my Totoro pet Totto-chan!

As in my other pages, I put up the Critters alphabetically--I refuse to show any favoritism in placement. The images here were stolen from other sites (you WILL be credited) and chopped up/enhanced/resized as I saw fit to emphasize the Critters. If you've any violent objections, feel free to contact me and if you've found a new Critter for this page, please, please fill up my form! I need all the help I can get.

Spirit wolf...here's the perfect protector!
Inuki
from the manga/movie X

Inuki is hardly a creature, being a spirit familiar of one of the Dragons of Heaven (I think)--well, how would you classify a spirit wolf? Whatever he is, his loyalty and ability cannot be questioned.

When he howled just before disappearing at the girl's death (what was her name? I forget...) it raised goosebumps. Poignant and painful.

Needless to say, I LOVE cats!
Kyaa
from the OAV Please Save My Earth

A guaranteed winner here: Kyaa is a silver-grey giant CAT--reminds me of a childhood fantasy I had about riding cats instead of horses. Besides, how many cats look good in Ray-Bans?

If I could sleep on a giant, fuzzy cat, I'd swoon! Reminds me too much of Totoro, and you know Totoro is my absolute favorite anime Critter.

I don't understand the way the OAV was laid out though. In a sense, most of episode 5 was so much dead weight, but Kyaa was there, so I guess the wanderjhar of the story can be forgiven. Too bad 24 issues of manga are way over my head. I don't think I can afford to see "Please Save My Earth" the way it was meant to be...

This image I stumbled accross in Kyaa's Please Save My Earth Page. I think the title says it all.

pupupuuPUU!
Mokona
from the series Magic Knight Rayearth

What is he? A rabbit, as the ears suggest? A totoro, as the body shape implies? Who cares? Mokona is one of the cutest critters around--he's useful, unlike the majority of anime pets. I wonder what ELSE he's got tucked away in his red jewel thing. Absolutely amazing!

The best part about Mokona is his attachment to the Knights, especially Hikaru. That mime of Hikaru's fireball attack he went into in the second season was fantastically funny! A question though: was he simply protecting that little fairy thing (whatzername?) or is there something else? = )

Imagine meeting this guy swimming in *your* tub!
Pen-Pen
from the series Neon Genesis Evangelion

His first appearance was quite memorable--the scorn was dripping from him when he punched open his refrigerator door. One click, then he was gone. The consternation he left in his wake was nearly priceless! (The first episodes of Evangelion had everything. Pen-Pen provided the comic relief by picking on Shinji...)

His personality is definitely of the "this is beneath me" caliber. He plays king of the hill quite well, really. If a critter could be called arrogant, Pen-Pen takes the cake!

tonari no totoro, totoro...I WANT A TOTORO!!!!!
Totoro
from the movie Tonari no Totoro (My Neighbor Totoro)

Miyazaki's Totoro is huge, and fuzzy, and very, very sweet. If they sold a stuffed toy, I'd buy it life-sized! The tiny ones are cuddlesome, while Totoro himself is--well, like a giant teddy bear! Absolutely adorable.

It's not just his looks either. When the kid stumbled into the lair of Totoro, I was sooo jealous--I wish I could sleep on a Totoro too! When he imitated their umbrella trick at the bus stop, I couldn't stop laughing. And that little dance he did, to help the seeds grow... The movie is just peppered all over with undeniable moments of cute.
