The head after a
few drops of hot melt glue to hold it together to safely cut
out the side profile.

You can see with
the side panels held in place with the hot melt, you can easily
and safely cut out the side profile. |

I now put reference
marks on the head to help with the carving. A centerline, the
indent line for the upper head, the cheek line and some bill
details are some that I use. You may want more, less or none. |

Since these are "rough"
gunning dekes you can carve a simple head or go for more detail.
A sanding station allows you to round out a head very quickly
(50 grit) and produce a simple gunning head. More detail, more
tools and work.
The same can be done with a rasp
and some sandpaper.
