SITUATION
You are a 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (26th MEU) - Battalion Landing Team - 1st Battalion, 8th Marines (BLT 1/8) – Company Commander. A Marine Rifle Company is composed of a Company Headquarters with two officers and four enlisted Marines, three Rifle Platoons with one officer and 42 enlisted. Each platoon has three Squads with 13 Marines each, each Squad has three Fire Teams with a Fire Team Leader, an Automatic Rifleman, and two Riflemen. Each Fire Team is armed with three M16A3 rifles, one with a M203 Grenade Launcher, and one SAW. The Rifle Company also has one Weapons Platoon with one officer and 46 enlisted. The Weapons Platoon has six M240G machineguns, three M224 60mm mortars, and six Mk153 SMAWs. Your unit has been in the country of Cortina for the past four weeks as part of a Joint Task Force (JTF) providing security for humanitarian relief efforts. Cortina is a Third World Country in the midst of a very active insurgency. The result has been a near total breakdown of law and order as well as a serious degradation of the urban infrastructure. This has been accompanied by outbreaks of disease and starvation. To date, there are at least three different factions fighting for control of the country. Enemy infantry forces have infiltrated and are occupying defensive positions around Shughart-Gordon Village (political and economic heart of an important coastal Department). The enemy's focus of main effort is to take control of Shughart-Gordon in order to secure a power base for further political and military actions against the Cortinian government. BLT 1/8 has been given the mission to retake control and return rightful control of the Village back to the government and host country military/police forces. The majority of the civilian populace has fled the city. However, some government workers remain and there is a strong possibility that these civilians may be used as "human shields. The BLT has secured most of their initial objectives but has been running into considerable resistance directed from some fortified buildings. Your company has been tasked with taking a key road intersection which controls the MSR running through Shughart-Gordon. Your company had no losses during earlier operations as the BLT reserve.
Your BLT Commander walks in and throws a map of the village down on the ground and tells you “Its time to finish this.” He points to a series of seven buildings. He estimates that there is at least an enemy platoon (25-30 personnel) defending the buildings. ROE call for minimal destruction/collateral damage to the Shughart-Gordon infrastructure. The BLT Commander states that you will clear these seven buildings of all enemy personnel. One building is a townhouse and the suspected command and control headquarters for rebel forces operating in Shughart-Gordon.
ENEMY SITUATION
The BLT S-2 confirms the Commanding Officer’s estimate. They have no mechanized or air support. However, there is one 80mm mortar providing indirect fire support from outside the village limits. The rebels are armed with AR-15s, AK-47s, and some stolen SMAW’s. They have had enough time to put in some mines and booby traps. Civilians have been spotted in the area and a few are suspected of providing intelligence and observing/adjusting mortar fire for the enemy.
