Constructing the Track
- Routing part 2 |

Routing the slots |
|
Routing the outer slot with the
trammel jig. An "up spiral"
bit was used, the sawdust choked
the trailing slot.

The bottom straight with the 3
right hand curves. Note the elliptical
orientation of the slots where
the straight meets the curve.
The view shows the 5" gutter
on the straight and the transition
to the 6 1/2" gutter on the
curve.
|
- The slots were routed in
3 phases: (1) the lower portion
of the track which had 3 right
hand turns, (2) the upper
section of the track which
had 3 left hand turns, (3)
the "S" section
joining 1 and 2.
- The outer slot was routed
first using the trammel.
- Slots 2 thru 4 were routed
using the pin jig.
- A scrap section was assembled
and attached to each end of
the track surface to provide
for a place for the trammel
to run off the last edge of
the track surface.
- The "esses" to
join the 2 main sections were
routed using a flexible strip,
nailed to the surface at 1
inch increments, offset from
the slots by the width of
the router base.
