Welcome to NJC Track &
Field / Cross -Country Team web.
This site will be taken offline in Oct 09 as the host will be shutting down its services. See you at njctrack.weebly.com after Oct 09. We are currently recruiting members for both the Boys Team and the Girls Team for the coming year 2010. In this coming year, we are rebuilding the team with the help of 2 coaches (Mr Lim and Mr Tan). At the same time, we are interested in athletes who have the passion in this sport and want to excel in both studies and sports. We are recruiting athletes with experience in X-Country, Long/Middle Distance or Sprints or Hurdles or Jumps.
Please write to njc_track@yahoo.com.sg or njc.track@gmail.com with your contact (handphone number) and your past experience in athletics if any. Please contact us before you receive your 'O' level results in Jan/Feb 2009.

Some words from ex-NJC Athletes,
Bernard Tay (Team Captain 2002-2003):

"
Thinking back about the team always bring back good memories and a warm sensation in my heart. My personal philosophy for training is that although not everyone is equally talented in the event, I believe that effective training and dedication will be able to balance it out. I never considered myself to be talented in running. I ran and trained hard because I love the sport and have a strong desire to excel in it. Under the leadership of Mr
Quek, Mr Sara and Mr Lim, I'm glad that we have transformed NJC Track and Team into a family of dedicated athletes who share a common vision - to keep the flag of NJC soaring high above, and to continue to break personal barriers. The values I've picked up through training with the team will forever be part of me. I'll never forget the moment after the Cross Country race at sentosa (National Inter Schools Cross Country 2003), it was definitely one of the most rewarding periods in my life. I'm currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign. Lastly, I have great confidence that this new batch of runners will excel if they are truly passionate about the sport. I hope to meet up with u (all) soon when i return in may..!" Bernard Tay |

"When
I decided to become a member of the NJ Track and Field Team, I knew I was making
a very bold move. I didn’t have a lot of athletic experience and was
definitely not a star athlete in the making. Despite all the initial hesitation,
I will never regret that bold move I made to join the NJ Track and Field Team. I
have many fond memories of my time as a Tracker. I will never forget how we use
to be in College till late at night after training, sometimes going out as a
Team for dinner, the many competitions we fought hard together in, the
occasional injuries we all sustained, how Siqi, my Captain, would keep telling
me “Haresh… when you coming for training ah?”, Track camp where we still
ended up training, how Titus, Guan Wen and I, all novice steeple chasers, tried
so hard to fill up the steeple chase pool, and most of all, how we all felt part
of a warm and caring family.

"To pen four years of an adrenaline-pumping, emotional adventure onto paper would be no easy task. Nevertheless, I would still try. The importance of trying, even in times of adversity and difficulty- only track could teach me that. While most people engage their CCAs in a committal manner, I see my association with track as a relationship. Though physically unquantifiable and inexistent, the concept of 'track' be it a mere CCA, a crimson pavement or even a surreal activity that elevates my human limits- I fell in love with it. I suppose when you love something deeply enough, you always let it empower you, and track did just that. These were the fundamentals of a passion that somehow coloured my 4 years in a place I was only expecting the dullness of grey. The first few years were always the hardest. In my case, I only made it hard for myself. Perhaps a lack of foresight when I was only 15 prevented me from seeing how well the next few years could unfold. It was just going through the motion then. From a ridiculous running posture to an attitude I am still not proud of, there were times I felt like quitting. The question is not 'What if I did?' but simply, 'Why?', 'Why did I stay on?'. The answer was simple, and in the rain one day, running next to the great Derek On, I realized there was magic in that feeling: striding against the cold wind, the cold water coaxing the veins on your forehead, the warmth from within your heart telling you that you are human, and one who is capable of great things. And great things happened. Or at least, I tried to make them happen. The next year, IP2, I made an effort to see things through for myself. That's when things started to change- for the better. I trained harder, and was admitted to more competitions. These set a strong foundation for me, competing with the titans of the A-Division, though I was barely 16. It all made sense in a way. The trainings only strengthened me, and added with great motivation from coaches and teammates, I overcame any fear possible, and that was the first step. That made the difference, not the trainings which are typically mandatory. It's what you personally take from the trainings. And what to take, or how to take, that's what the competitions granted me- competitions where we sunk our souls in like warriors, like a team. And when I think of 'team', there's only one team that rings a bell for me: the team in my third year. That was the landmark experience of any group effort I've had in the longest time. The beauty of struggling together made all the difference, and there was so much passion in fighting and competing, we believed a 4th place was possible. Alas, we were edged down to 5th on race day. But even till today, I bear not a single regret with this team. We were definitely not heroes. We just ordinary boys who became men when we performed the extraordinary- fighting like there was no tomorrow. And that sentiment rung in my head when the track marshal rung the bell for the A-Division Boys 800m finals last year. It was only one lap to go, and I was still behind at 4th. I pushed and pushed but I couldn't catch him. I just couldn't- eventually that is. But deep down I knew, if I was going to lose to him anyway, the best I could do was to make him suffer, and make sure he was struggling as much I was. I wasn't going to give up. I chased him. I chased my dreams. And I chased my dreams for 4 years. I never caught them, but in that chasing and fighting and self-perseverance, I learnt of the beauty in adversity. I learnt the value of determination. I learnt the importance of trying. Even if I didn't acquire these dreams of mine, they certainly came true in another form. All that I learnt in track, transpired off the track, and that's when I learnt my first love loved me in return. Track was my first love. Track ignited a fire in me, and I blazed the track." Devathas Satianathan (NJC X-Country & Track Team of 2005 -2006):

Run
like hell and get the agony over with. That
mantra pretty much dictated my first few months as an aspiring student athlete,
albeit a greenhorn. My motivations for joining the discipline were unclear to me
at that time, and even know when confronted with such existential doubts I
falter. But one thing was for sure, I wanted to improve. And fast. I held
strongly to the ‘without limits’ mentality, and never gave up. I went for
most every training session, and did things the hard way. I fought to keep up
with the pack, substituting experience with sheer grit, and managed somewhat to
satisfy myself. However, it did not last. Injuries
soon set in and my career that began on a high looked set to crumble. What
started off as a nagging pain grew sharper and became an incapacitating dilemma
- one that defied all laws of meritocracyy as I saw it. The problem of shin
splints came about as a result of over-training. And the only way out was rest.
My eagerness and desperation led me to take the short cut out. Train through the
pain and ignore the injury. It soon escalated to a stress fracture and many
months of hour-long rides on the primitive bike in the Spartan, air-conless
gymnasium at NJ welcomed me.
Devathas in the centre. Joe (left) and Sean (right) are beside him.
|
I
had as many doubts as anyone else. Standing on the starting line, we're all
cowards. That was how I began every race.
Writing myself off, shoulders slumped and pre-empting excuses. The injury was
not just physical, my confidence took a blow as well. I returned amongst the
weakest in the team and was trying hard to even keep up. You can imagine what it
was like when we went for competitions, where the nation’s best came to play.
Little did I know, everyone else probably felt the same. They just had the
common decency to ignore the voice in their heads, put on a strong front and
smile. Champions
do not become champions when they win the event, but in the hours, weeks, months
and years they spend preparing for it. The victorious performance itself is
merely the demonstration of their championship character. ‘To give
anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.’

Captain Lin SiQi at the end of the 4x400 m. A perfect race. She is a multi-talented runner. In JC1, she ran the National Inter Schools X-Country Championships and won an individaul medal (13th). In 2004, she ran in the 400 m Hurdles and 100 m Hurdles winning a gold and silver respectively.

Running by Lim Zirui represent the meaning of running with pure guts. Lim Zirui, running against the best with his best in the 1500 m in 2004. Without fear and running in the front pack in 2003 and 2004, he achieved a bronze in both years. An achievement unparalled so far in the year 2000 onwards.

Koh Sihui with her 3000 m gold medal. The smile was the result of many hours of hard work put in by her and the teachers. She won a bronze in the 1500 m in the same year. A novice runner in JC1 without any running background rising to the very top in 2 years with NJC. Under the guidance of Mr Saravana, Mr Vincent Quek & Mr Lim, she came in 2nd at the 2004 National Inter Schools Cross Country. One week before the Cross Country race, she fell and injured her knee during training in Turf City. The 3000 m gold was a testament of what could be achieved if you enjoy and believe in what you are doing. Koh Si Hui enjoys running. Beside her is Renuka, Devathas's sister.

2005. Beside him are Joe, Guan Wen and Harry. Tan Shao Wei
specialised in 400 m Hurdles and 800 m. He led by example putting
110% during training enduring through pain and agony, and at times
running till he dropped onto the track in agony. He was a finalist
in the 400m Hurdles during the National Inter Schools Track & Field
Championships. He also led the A-Boys team to the finals of the
4x100 m and 4x400 m. An impressive feat indeed. |

A tribute to Mr Stephen Loh... A Good Man
"One of our teacher in-charge, Mr Stephen Loh, passed
away in Cambodia while representing the country in a Dragon Boat Race. A
freak accident took him away from us. Though he was with us for only half a
year, he gave us hope and helped us in many ways. He was always there for
us. He spent much time listening, coaching, and always encouraging
us. The time we spent together was short, but we can feel the bond, the
friendship and the confidence he gave us. We will miss you but we
will always remember your guidance, your warm smile, and your kind heart. "
... Mr Lim Jan '08
"As I visited you recently during the Qing Ming period, I could not help
myself from some shedding tears. May the team remember your guidance and
you by doing their very best in competitions and in their
lives." ... Mr Lim Apr '08
" While many may have forgotten about you, we certainly will not. Thanks to your guidance and watching over us, the athletes have done well this year. The fighting spirit that you have given us will keep us strong and our spirit high." ... Mr Lim Dec '08
