Expert Factfile

Here are the "baseball cards" of our experts. In this factfile you will find complete statistics for all experts that have participated in at least one full season of the SJS Picks Contest. These cards will be updated at the end of each full season of picking activity.

The cards are arranged in alphabetical order, with one exception: Webmaestro and Dan, founders of the SJS Picks Contest, are given first.

Key: For career marks, two numbers are often given. For weeks won, the first number is the number of weeks won, the second is the number of seasons in which the expert participated, and during which weeks won was an official statistic (i.e., since 1998). For close scores and similar statistics, it is the number of close scores over the number of games picked in the era that close scores was an official stat (i.e., since 1998).

Records are listed for each season. The number in parentheses is the official ranking; an N/A indicates that the expert did not pick enough that year to earn an official rank (50% of total games). The exception is 1999, where Curtis and Matthias both have a 1*, indicating that they finished ahead of Kelly but were not awarded the championship (see 1999 databank for an explanation).

Began picking games with dan in 1989... Founded the SJS Home Page on November 13, 1996... Is the only member of the Hall Of Fame Committee (2000)... Had best picks season in 1998 but fell 2 correct picks short of Dan in a quest to finally beat his arch-rival... Finally broke through the "glass ceiling" in 2001 with an upset of arch-rival Dan, beating him by 2 games... was shut out of postseason awards for the first time in 2003

Had beaten arch-rival Webmaestro every year 1990-2000... Was overall champion in 1996 and unofficial champion every complete year since 1989... Earned Army Cadet Cross in 2001 as he failed to compete for title and lost to arch-rival Webmaestro for the first time... Earned first Renegade in 2003 and picked 46.4% of upsets correct that year

Joined the contest in 2000 and established himself as an accurate OOL picker... Favorite team won the national title that year (Oklahoma)... Rejoined us briefly in 2002 before an impending move to Memphis (which did not derail boat sidious or SIR CHAPS) caused him to leave us again... Notes
Saw some playing time in 1996 before claiming the title in his first full season of picking in 1997... Contributes significantly to browbeating, muckraking, mailing lists... Had a short-lived 1999 feature on the page called "Boughter's Bluster"... One of the leading recruiters for the page (Chuck Taylor, Keith Harmon, We Are In Trouble.... among his signees)... regular correspondant of nationally recognized sportswriters like Tony Kornheiser and Dan Lebatard... Won the Browbeater Of The Year in 2001 for meritorious efforts to draw Kelly into mailing list discussions... Rebounded in 2001 after some disappointing seasons... Renamed himself "boat sidious" (nee boat, nee John), partially stealing a one-time Webmaestro name (saint sidious)... seemed to lose interest in 2003 with frequent nickname changes and missed weeks... failed to win any weeks in 2003 (first time since 2000)

Narrowly dodged the 2001 Misplaced Priorities Awards for allowing his newborn baby and new job to get in the way of picks... in 2003, earned the ignomious distinction of beating out Homer for the Bottom Feeder Award; the first time that award has gone to a human expert

Won the pool in 1998 in his first season... Has made sports on the web a profession, not just a hobby... Heater14 claims to have won the title in 1998 by relying on teams' historic records rather than recent performance... Won the Blue Ribbon in 1998 along with the championship (total wins and percentage) and captured another Blue Ribbon in 2001 when he finished fifth overall... in 2003, earned the Army Cadet Cross after turning in his worst picks percentage since 1999 and his worst finish ever

Won the pool in 1999... Heavily criticized for Freddie Favoritism and loyalty to Miami... Well-known muckraker... Recipient of the Webmaestro's subtle browbeats with his season-ending photos (see above)... Became page's first two-time champion with a decisive win in 2001 over Consensus Curtis and all rivals... Pulled off the unusual daily double in 2001 when she won the championship and her team, the Miami Hurricanes, also won a decisive national title... wrestled the Steady Freddie Award from Heater's steady hands in 2002... took home a huge number of trophies in 2003 when she became the first 3-time winner of the contest... had the best percentage, best upset IQ, and most close scores in 2003 for the picks page trifecta... established herself as greatest expert ever in 2003... single-season records established in 2003: most correct picks (287), highest upset index (61.22%), most close scores (43), most exact scores (tie, 4)

Won the Pulitzer in 2001 despite, or because of, several well-written but controversial postings to the mailing list... won 2003 Pulitzer for Penn State vs. Wisconsin game story

Misplaced Priorities (1999)
Browbeater Of The Year (2000)
Renegade Award (2001)
Army Cadet Cross (2002)
Most Improved (2002)

Notes
Matthias and I go back the longest of any two experts; both of us have archives of ridiculously intricate statistical analyses of pro and little league baseball from the early 1980s... Email exchanges during 2000 with eventual champion Oz brought to public light the browbeating capability all his midwestern buddies knew so well from back in the day... Captured first Renegade Award in 2001 but picking skills slipped dramatically after the millenium... was made eligible for the Army Cadet Cross by Special Action of the Hall Of Fame Committee in 2002... rebounded to respectability in 2002 and received Most Improved Expert... participated and performed reasonably well in 2003 considering the distracting nuptuals

Notes
One of the most conservative pickers the contest has ever known, but has a poor performance when he does pick an upset... earned Rookie of the Year honors in 1998 though he actually made 4 picks in 1996... Oz, like heater14, has been involved in professional sports working at both STATS, Inc. and ESPN, which led to some memorable insights during a 1999 mailing list discussion on announcers... Made good on the promise of his rookie year by winning the contest (by 5 games) in 2000... One of the most spectacular Fall From Grace stories ever, Oz captured the Blue Ribbon and Black Ribbon in back-to-back seasons... But in 2002, reversed the trick going from worst to first... set all-time low upset index in 2002 at 0.083... 71.24% in 2002 best percentage by a human since Heater14 in 1998... missed his first OOL pick ever in 2003... his St. John Johnnies won the Division III football title in 2003

Notes
Joined the pool in 2001 as one of only 2 west coast experts on the panel... Had early success and maintained his picking position throughout the season... rookie mark of 67.51% best for rookie of the year winner since Oz's 68.7% in 1998... nearly claimed championship in 2002 but was hurt by abysmal bowl picking (11-17)... still looking for that breakthrough season

Notes
Played occasionally in 1996 and 1997 but really began competing in 1999... has made considerable literary contributions to the web page and mailing list including two winning pieces for the 1999 Pulitzer Prize... father of two of the experts (Kevin and Webmaestro)...Led the pool early in 2000 but plummeted by midyear... Received strong consideration for the Dale Helms Award in 2001 in exhibiting another midseason collapse... Won the Properly Placed Priorities Award in 2001 for submitting picks despite weeks of arduous hip surgery recovery... Went by the handle "BioSaint" beginning in 2002 after hip-replacement surgery... went 18-10 in the 2002 bowl season earning Expert To Watch honors... went by BioLeftHip in ill-fated 2003 campaign... still looking for first OOL pick correct as of 2003

Notes
A member of the Magnificent 7, earned a veterans committee nod as 1997's Browbeater Of The Year for stirring up more Monday morning trouble than anyone... famous for his unfathomable Tavian Banks propaganda... thinks he missed some "easy weeks" in early 1997 that cost him a shot at the title his rookie season... arch-rival is Kevin, but Kevin probably doesn't know it... missed the latter weeks of 2000 due to schoolwork, an excuse frowned upon here at the page... Made his best showing since 1997 in 2001 challenging champion Kelly late into the season and was named 2001's Expert To Watch... received Fall From Grace in 2002 after failing to capitalize on 2001's Expert To Watch... showed great comeback ability in 2003 and challenged arch-rival Kelly for crown... was OOL king in 2003, nailing 5/7

Notes
Redshirted in 1997 but participated fully in Monday morning browbeating... Calculates scores using a complicated and intensely guarded formula which has produced 69 close scores in two seasons... long string of consecutive weeks leading close scores list snapped in the third week of 2000... principal architect of jackass-gate in early 1999... major rival is Oz who he suspects spies long-distance on his picks... the Salvor Hardin (or Mark Twain) of the picks contest, whose witticisms ("Even a blind squirrel finds a nut", "You have to know when to get off the bandwagon") are as ubiquitous as his famous malpropisms ("Texas Aggies", "Michigan Spartans", "Louie Holt", "Virginia Hoke-eyes")...Experienced one of the hardest falls from grace in 2000 going from 4th to 19th and losing his Send Me To Vegas title after two years of domination... Looked to return to 1999 form in 2001 but became mired in Quake II and other ill-advised pursuits to earn instead the Misplaced Priorities Award... was in danger of failing to compete via the 80% rule but nonetheless competed for the championship in 2002, but instead won the Dale Helms Award... his dropping out of the mailing list may be a principal reason why the Hall Of Fame Committee "sent a message" with no 2002 Browbeater of the Year Award

Notes
Actually held a job in college football taping Florida Gator games for Sunshine Network... provided several "from the booth" commentaries and previews of Florida games... career leader in upset picks... contender for half of 1998 before precipitously dropping to near last place... Won the John Cooper Award in 2001 for competing for the Renegade Award, the Expert To Watch (for outstanding bowl performance), and the Limb Walker... Had a tough season but a very strong 17-8 finish in the bowls to lead the week... won 3 of 4 Renegade Awards 1999-2002... had a career year in 2003 and challenged the leaders; two last place weeks cost him
