Seasonal Awards

The postseason awards festival has always been one of the highlights of the picks page. Originally, an attempt was made to award something to each participant, but since the expert pool has expanded, the awards have become more competitive.

Picks Page Champion Pulitzer Prize Expert To Watch
Description: The Picks Page Championship is awarded to the expert that wins the Picks Contest each year. This is usually the player with the best picking percentage, but only if that expert picked at least 80% of the games and picked all the bowl games. Nonhuman competitors are ineligible. Description: The Pulitzer Prize is awarded to the best piece of writing during the season. That might be a commentary, a guest commentary, or a mailing list posting. Description: The Expert To Watch is the expert that I think everyone needs to watch out for next year. This is either an expert that came on during the end of the season, or who seemed to have a knack for making key picks. Note that my 1998 Expert To Watch won the title in 1999.

Fall From Grace Award Dale Helms Award Loyalty Award
Description: The Fall From Grace Award is given annually to the expert that has the most trouble capitalizing on the previous season's success. Often it is given to an returning-champion who falls flat. Description: The Dale Helms Award, named for its first winner, is given to the expert that starts out strong but peters out by mid-season. Originally named the Lawrence Phillips Award. Description: The Loyalty Award is given to the picker that most defies logic by picking a team they like rather than a team that should win, objectively speaking.

Freddie Favorite Certificate Browbeater Of The Year Send Me To Vegas Award
Description: The Freddie Favorite Cerificate is awarded annually to the expert that picks the fewest upsets and who never goes out on a limb. Description: The most coveted of the page's "social" awards, the Browbeater Of The Year is the one who does the most trash-talking and browbeating in person, on the page, or on the mailing list. The Browbeater Of The Year can also be awarded for excessive muckraking (i.e., 1999 winner). A 1997 winner was granted in 2000 by the Hall Of Fame Committee. Description: The Send Me To Vegas Award goes to the maestro of the Close and Exact Scores categories. It is the expert that most often picks games within 7 points.

Misplaced Priorities Award Renegade Award Bottom Feeder
Description: The Misplaced Priorities Award is given to the expert that most foolishly neglected their picks research and devotion for less-important concerns (work, school, etc). The 2000 winner was nominated for her failure to engage in browbeating amidst Miami's enormous season. Description: A companion to the Freddie Favorite Certificate, the Renegade Award is given to the regular picker that picks upsets at the greatest frequency (i.e., highest Upset Index). Description: The Bottom Feeder Award is given to the regular picker who finishes worst. Fortunately for some people (Mater O?), non-human competitors are eligible.

Army Cadet Cross SJS Blue Ribbon SJS Black Ribbon
Description: The Army Cadet Cross is given when warranted to a former champion that scares no one. Like Army's college football team, it denotes a dinosaur whose picking methods are outdated and ineffective, even if they once reigned supreme. Description: Begun in response to controversy in 2001 and awarded retroactively, the blue ribbon is awarded to the human expert who picked the most correct games during the season (as opposed to the best percentage). Description: Awarded to the human expert who made the most incorrect picks over the course of the season. Begun in 2001 but awarded retroactively for previous seasons.

Properly Placed Priorities Commendation POW Award Meritorious Contributions
Description: Awarded as appropriate to individuals that overcome hardship to nonetheless fulfill their obligations to submit picks or otherwise contribute to the page. Description: POW - not as in Prisoner of War, but as in Pick Of The Week. I've long regretted not keeping a record of who won the weekly pick of the week to award a prize to the expert collecting the most picks of the week. However, the weekly POW is awarded to an out on a limb pick or an exact score, if possible, so the year end POW award goes to the expert with the most OOL Correct + Exact Scores. First awarded in 2002 and awarded retroactively back to 2000, when OOL stats were first kept. Description: Awarded only infrequently when an individual steps up to offer unusual service to the Hall Of Fame Committee.
