Who and why?

When you have a fast internet connection and a few interesting files, you can start your own FTP server.  Starting your own server is not only a great and generous gift to "the community" it is also a nice way to get in contact with other people.

What do you need?

Setting up your own FTP server is very easy, all you need is a fast and stable internet connection and a shareware program called Serv-U.
Before you start and FTP server it is very important too make sure that your internet service provider allows you to create a server.
Serv-U website: http://www.serv-u.com/

Creating a server

  • Make sure that your Internet service provider allows you to run a server.
  • Download and install Serv-U from http://www.serv-u.com/ (30 day fully functional trial version).
  • When you run the program for the first time, a wizard will appear that allows you to create a server in just a few moments.  I suggest that you use this wizard to set up server (reinstall the program and install it again if you canceled the wizard).
You can start a new server without the wizard by right clicking on 'Domains' in the tree-view on the left and selecting 'New domain', another wizard will guide you through the process of creating a new domain.  You will have to manually add user accounts an set your preferred settings like directories, directory access and passwords.
