Diagnostic routine Fehlersack program A program which is useful in detecting  faults within a machine which may need to be debugged.
 
Dialogue box Dialöge Kasten A little boxed area that pops up on the screen when further input is required by the user before the program can continue.
 
Digital Digital Changing in discrete jumps and not continuous like analogue quantities.
 
Digital computer Digital compüter It only works with data that is represented in a digital form.
 
Digitize Digitalisieren Converting an analogue quantity to a digital one.
 
Digitizer Digitalisierer A device that changes analogue signals into digital.
 
Direct access storage Direkt zugriffsaufbewahrung This is storage in random access memory where the data can be accessed almost instantly.
 
Directory Inhaltsverzeichnis A place in an 'electronic filing cabinet'  that allows the keeping together of names of related files, the cabinet is the storage disk, each drawer is a drive or ROOT directory.
 
Disk Dikette A flat circular plate covered in magnetic material which is able to store data concentrated.
 
Documentation Dokumentation Printed information which usually accompanies a computer package and advises on usage and what output can be expected.
 
Document image processing Bildnis dokumentier  prozess The storing, indexing and fast retrieval of digital images of items that were inputted into the system using a scanner.
 
Document reader Belegleser Where forms having certain marks in certain positions they can be read at high speed by a computer.
 
Dot matrix printer Matrix punktier drucker A printer that forms characters on paper by printing a pattern of dots. An impact printer.
 
Downloading Nachladen The taking of data from the internet or a larger machine and moving to a smaller computer.
 
Down time Ausfall The duration of time a computer is unusable due to faults.
 
Drag Ziehen The movement of highlighted text around the screen by the use of a mouse.
 
Dumb terminal Ineffektiver computer anschluss A terminal with no processing power of it's own. Often used as an access point to a main server or mainframe computer.
 
Dump Weguerfen A method of copying data in a section of memory and sending it to a peripheral device e.g. a printer.
 
Duplex operation Doppelte durchfuehrung A method of transmission which allows data to go in both directions at the same time. 
 
Dye sublimation printer Farb sub- drucker This printer uses dyes to transfer the computer output onto prepared materials that in a process that gives a near photographic result
 
Dynamic data exchange Dynamishher daten tausch The ability to transfer data between different applications packages that are already resident in a machine.
 
Dynamic stop Dynamisher stop A mode of drawing the user's attention to some factor or other when running a program, indicating that something is wrong.
