Ultra high frequency (UHF) Ultrahohe frequenz A specific range of radio waves having wavelengths approximately between 10 and 100 cm.
 
Uncommitted logic array (ULA) Neutrale logic matrix A chip on which there are sets of logic circuits that have not yet been connected together.  Each set is complete in itself but has to be linked to the others by one or more connections.
 
Underflow Unterloup The generation of a number, e.g. by division which is too small for the computer to store.
 
Unicode Unicode A character set developed by Microsoft and based on a two byte structure which gives a potential basic set of nearly 70,000 characters compared with ASCII'S 256.
 
UNIX UNIX An operating system developed by Bell Laboratories with the object of improving software portability.
 
Update Aktualisieren The process of changing a program package or file so as to bring it up to date.
 
Upgrade Erhieitern The improvement of a piece of hardware, software or firmware, often an option given to the purchaser which can be taken up at a later date.
 
User group Anwender Gruppe A group of people who meet or correspond regularly because of their interest in a particular machine or suite of programs.
 
User port Braucherhafen A socket on the microcomputer's casing which allows the user to connect additional equipment, e.g. printers, scanners.
 
Utility programs Nutzung programme Programs designed to assist an operator to perform particular tasks such as listing a file held on magnetic tape or disk, or copying data from one disk to another prior to a program run.
