8 in 1 - has plenty of what hedgies need most and kept fresh in a sealed bag. "Advanced Nutrition Diet - Nutrient rich blend fortified with vitamins and minerals" |
Pretty Pets - this is a really good kind of food, if you can manage to get your hog to eat it. It's on the sweet side - a nice change. Low in iron; helps to maintains healthy teeth and gums! |
Vitakraft - some call it "vitacrap." It's actually made for European Hedgehogs, but can still be fed to African Pygmy Hogs, just remember to take out the BIG PIECES and feed only as a TREAT. |
Brisky's - I've never used this kind of food before. A lot of people like it, but I saw that it has produced some bad batches that have made some hogs produce more droppings and even killed sugar gliders. |
In addition to using the above types of foods, remember it is important to also feed your hedgies a good amount of veggies, fruits, meats, and eggs (Straws LOVES hardboiled eggs). And, don't forget the crickets and meal worms! |
Amounts of food required for your hog really depend on the hog itself. Hogs are a lot like people in certain ways: some eat a lot, some eat a little, some get fat, some stay thin, and even have their own personalities! |
Select Diet - soft pellet food highly recommended; has been fed to hedgies for 5 years and has always had excellent results! |
Treats 8 in 1 Fruit and Veggie Treat - large pieces and small pieces, some are hard, some are soft; I think you're going to be lucky if your hog likes this! Yogurt, Milk&Honey, and Strawberry Drops (Vitakraft)- supposed to be for hamsters, very fattening so don't feed a lot (why do fattening foods always taste the best?!) Fish - cooked in tinfoil in the oven with no spices works best; some hogs may be allergic, so feed only a little at a time to see if your hedgie is okay with it (beware though - tuna contains a lot of mercury, so don't feed too much!) Chicken - cooked without spices any way; some like to boil it, I prefer to bake it Hamburger/Beef - give only a little at a time; some hedgehogs have bad reactions (loose poo) and shouldn't be fed beef that often (make sure it's lean and to press out extra grease with a napkin) Grass - it's okay to nibble on (just a little common sense: MAKE SURE it has no fertilizer on it!!) Baby Food - I'm not sure what everyone else uses, but Straws thinks he's in heaven when he chows down on Graduates Turkey Sticks! Apple sauce, fruits, and veggies are also good for them, as long as mixed with other foods. Cat and Dog Food - high quality brands are okay to give, make sure it's not the only thing they eat though, mix in some regular hedgie food, as well. (NOTE: Iams and Science Diet have a high fat content; if you are going to use anything, TRY: Eukanuba - a cat food) |
Everyday Hedgehog Food Brands |
Zoo Fare - highly recommended by leading zoos and exotic animal vets, the makers actually duplicated the nutrition the animal gets in insects! |
