The African Pygmy Hedgehog is growing to be one of the most loved pets all around the world today. These little mammals grow to be about eight to ten inches long and weigh up to around one pound! They may live as long as 7-10 years, but typically their life span is from 3-5 years. There are several colors a hedgie can be, and it is determined by the color of their quills, fur and skin. Quills are thin hollow spikes which are located on the hedgehog's back. These help aid in the protection of the hedgie. When they sense danger, they may huff and puff (I'm trying to find the more "scientific name for this as you read), which is when they stand their spikes on end, or they may roll into a tight ball. This enables the hog to protect his or her underside, face, and appendages. While doing this, the hedgehog may make noises and hiss to keep away predators and anything else he or she thinks is dangerous. Hedgehogs absolutly love to squeeze into tight places and under clothes, bags, leaves, and anything else that they can manage to get into. Many times when a hog is let loose and whoever let him or her go is sitting on the floor, the hog will actually stay around the person! This has been my experience almost everytime I have let Straws go. When he is loose, he may smell around (hogs have a very strong sense of smell) and when he finds something to smell perticularly fascinating, he starts the process of annointing. This is when a hedgehog smells an object and gets as much of the smell on himself as he can by licking, biting, and other ways. Then he or she foams at the mouth while twisting in very odd dirctions and licking his or her back. This is because they want the smell to spread. A hedgehog may do this with a number of things: toys, food, boxes, as well as many other things. |
