Dry Skin

symptoms (all do not have to be present)
itchy hedgie
tattered ears
loss of quills

treatment
Kalandra from Chins-n-Quills says this works for her (as well as others!):

Usually done after a bath, poke a hole in a Vitamin E capsule and squeeze three drops across the back, one drop on each shoulder, and one drop on the rump.  Work into quills with fingers.
Mites

symptoms (all do not have to be present)
itchy hedgie
loss of quills
skin scratch test - scrape a little skin off your hedgie onto a dark piece of paper; if white dots move, that means there are mites
cloth test - rub a dark cloth (usually black or dark blue) on a hedgie; if there are moving white dots, your hedgie has mites.)

treatment
Make an appointment at the vet.  There are several options, either a shot (requires multiple visits) or a dip.
Nannyogg from chins-n-quills states this:
Ivermectin has its cons, too (an injection for mites).. Some alternatives are amitraz (applied as a dip) and sealmectin. Despite the fact that Ivermectin is the standard treatment, research from the Santa Barbara Zoo found that Amitraz was far superior in reducing and preventing reoccurrence of mites than Ivermectin in seriously infested hedgies!
Our experience has been that Amitraz worked better than Ivermectin, but Sealmectin worked the best. I have also seen references to use of pyrethrins, but no specific data. It doesn't hurt to ask the vet about alternatives if the Ivermectin doesn't seem to be effective or if you have concerns about the hedgie's health!
Bloody Feet

symptoms
hedgie has cut and/or bloody feet

treatment
The cause may actually be the wheel the hedgie is using.  There have been many cases of a Wodent Wheel cutting a hedgie's feet because they do not step over the edges of the holes, but rather, step onto the edge, resuling in small cuts.  If you have a Wodent Wheel, you may consider another wheel (
hedghogwheels.com is well known for the quietness and durability of it's wheels.)
Losing Quills

symptoms
quills are found in the cage or where the hedgie has been crawling

treatment
First off, quills may be lost for various reasons:
1. natural - just like humans lose hair, hedgies lose quills (usually between 8-12 weeks old; this process is known as
quilling)
2. dry skin - bath (how to give a hedgie a bath); spray with water once or twice a day; poke a hole in a Vitamin E capsule and drop three drops on back, one on each shoulder, one on the rump
3. mites - make an appointment with the vet
Broken Quills

symptoms
pieces of broken quills found in cage or where hedgie has been crawling; broken quills found still attached to hedgie

treatment
You may have to switch the object they are using as their home to sleep in.  Sometimes where they choose to sleep is too rough or low and since their quills hit the object so much, they tend to get weak and break.  Many hedgies love washcloths, try something soft, in place of hard things.  If this is not the case, contact your vet.
Green and/or Runny Poo

symptoms
obviously, green or runny poo

treatment
Most of the times it is because of the diet.  Have you used something new?  If you have, do not feed it to your hedgie anymore.  If it persists after removing new type of food and after two to three bowel movements, contact vet as soon as possible.
May also be the cause of stress, other illness, or infection.  Sometimes it is also a reaction to a certain medication.  Is your hedgie taking a new medication?  Contact the vet to be safe!

Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome
(aka WHS or Degenerative Myelopathy)

symptoms
when a hedgie tries to walk, it wobbles (very much)
this is due to the fact that it's muscles are becoming paralyzed from the rear forward;  occurs slowly over time; usually happens in younger hedgehogs; for more information,
visit this site

treatment
there is no proven cure for a hedgehog with WHS, but this is what has been found so far:

Vitamin B1 and Slenium given in moderate dosages in the early stages of WHS, may help to stop its progression.  However, remember to get the proper dosages for your peticular hedgie, you must visit the vet, because, like drugs, if the dosage is too high, there may be medical problems as a result.  Dosage is figured by weight, and, even if you do have a scale, please seek a vets help before giving anything to cure your hedgehog!  You may just be trying to help, but leave it to the professionals.
Vitamin B1 and Selenium are both available in capsule form, which should be added to water and given to the hedgehog in drops, usually through a syringe.
Hibernation

symptoms
wobblieness and lethargy, cold underbelly

treatment
first off an most important, get the hedgie WARM.  Secondly, find out where the source of coolness is and fix it.  Some people put warming rocks in their cages and heating pads - just make it warm though, too hot will be harmful to the hedgehog.
**
Warning - this is fatal when attempted by domesticated hedgies!!!  It is strongly suggested to contact your vet.**
Stroke

symptoms
fast occurance of wobbliness or paralysis

treatment
see the vet asap
Tumors, Cancer, and Lumps

symptoms
lumps felt underneath the skin

treatment
see the vet asap; sometimes this may even be pregnancy
Gingivitis and other Oral Diseases

symptoms
red or bleeding gums, bad breath, trouble chewing

treatment
contact vet to see what to use; there is a solution that may be added to your hedgie's water that will help prevent gingivitis and other oral diseases; also, your hedgehog should have a regular dental cleaning (the hedgehog will be put under); some may opt to brush their own hedgie's teeth with a pet toothbrush and pet toothpaste (non-fluoride), however this can be tedious and hard to do!!
