Hi,
Well I'm now back in the sunny Isle of Man, getting my clothes washed
and my belly full. I'm just here for the weekend before disappearing
off for part 2 of my holiday Nepal and India. Here is the news since
Cape Town. Cape Town is a lovely city. I spent a couple of days
just wondering around looking at the sight, being a real tourist.
On one day Kerry and I, along with a couple of friends, hired a car
and went to visit Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope. Fun day out,
be we didn't get to see any whales, but did see a load of penguins
(bizarre). The next day we had decided to go diving with great white
sharks (why, I'm not sure), but the minibus that was taking us to Gans
Bay (Gansbaai in South African) broke down just outside of Cape Town,
on the motorway that ran through one of the largest and most dangerous
townships! The three of us who were foreigners didn't realise how
dangerous a position we were in until the armed police turned up to
guard us while we waited for a tow truck to turn up! The next day we
were taken to Gans Bay, and broke down again, but well outside of town
so we got taken to Gans Bay eventually. Then my camera broke. When we
put to sea the boat broke. We didn't get the hint and carried on anyway
(with a new boat). That day we sat on a the boat for five and a half
hours, but no sharks turned up, but we did see a few whales.
The next day, Sunday morning, I legged it up Table Mountain because the
cable car was not running (too windy). The top was covered in mist so
I didn't see anything and I was reminded of walking in Scotland. That
afternoon I watched England get stuffed by South Africa in the world
cup before picking up the campervan we had hired for the next four
days (at the cost of £4!!) to take us to Jo'burg. Being English (I know
I'm technically not, but close enough) and being in South Africa when
they beat us at rugby in the world cup is not that great. They don't
gloat, they just ask whether I saw the match or not (whilst smiling,
a lot).
The next 3 or so days was spent returning the campervan to Jo'burg (that
is why we got it so cheap, they needed it moving [company called Britz:Africa
and it needs doing all the time, they also run Britz:Australia and Britz:New
Zealand and is a great way of getting from A to B if you've only want
to take a few days). Sunday night was spent in Mossel Bay. We arrived
after the campsite office was shut and left before it opened so got
away with a free night! The next day we travelled along the (over rated)
Garden Route, stopping at Plettenburg Bay and the Bloukrans bridge for
the worlds highest bungi (216m) which I did, of course. We eventually
reached Jo'burg on Wednesday morning and flew back to the UK that evening.
If anyone would like my view about any part of Africa that I've been to,
please just email me at

Cheers,
Mike
