Diane's Diary

Grenada - Part 1

6/29 Friday

The wind gusted down the mountains last night so I didn't sleep well. All the boats left the anchorage today except one. There was one sailboat in the anchorage far away from everyone else. One boat had gone over to ask them if they wanted to join the cruiser party but they said no. We later found out it was Morgan Freeman's boat & they had been anchored there for 30 days. Wish we had seen him but I understand now why he was anchored away from all the other boats.

Anyway, we left the anchorage with Legacy around 9:30am. All the other boats had already gotten underway. We sailed to Carriacou, which is part of Grenada. Kristali picked us up with their dinghy so we didn't have to put our engine in the water. It's a good thing they didn't have to leave the dinghy there, as the boat boys around the dock were terrible. We had heard of one cruiser that refused to pay the "landing fee" so they put his locked dinghy line under the jetty so he had to dive for it! Nice people- welcome to Grenada! But we had no problems since Kristali just left everyone off.

We cleared into customs but Larry only asked for 2 weeks, as he didn't remember Carriacou was part of Grenada. Oh well, we'll have to go back to customs when we get to Tyrell Bay to get an extension. We plan on spending at least one month in Grenada.

We left Hillsborough around 12:30pm & headed for Sandy Island to have lunch & snorkel. Sandy Island is a small island with a few palm trees & not much else. They have put some coral near the island to protect it from erosion. We had lunch onboard since they was not much shade to have a picnic. After lunch, Kristali, Legacy & us went to the island to do some snorkeling. We saw a moray eel trying to catch these thousands of little fish all around us! Not as good snorkeling as the Tobago Cays but not that bad. We left for Tyrell Bay around 3:30 & motored the 3 miles into the harbor. We were all tired after not sleeping well the night before. One of the boats invited all the others to go out for pizza but Larry said he was tired & didn't want to go. I was tired too but I was dying for pizza & didn't feel like cooking. So, we just stayed home & I made a canned dinner. Edible but not great- I didn't feel like cooking.

6/30 Saturday

Gabrielle, a 65' motorboat also cruising the islands, invited us to go fishing with them for the day. What a marvelous big boat! We left at 7:30 am - really late to be going fishing but no one wanted to get up any earlier. Kristali & Legacy also came. We caught a small tuna & then Larry reeled in a huge 70lb Wahoo!! It was great fun & we all had a wonderful time. Gabrielle has invited us over to dinner tonight to eat some of the fish. We invited a bunch of other cruisers in the anchorage also. We got back to our boat around 3pm & I made 2 lbs of macaroni salad & beer bread since there was going to be around 20 people for dinner. We went back to Gabrielle around 5:30 & had a wonderful bar-b-que fish dinner. The fish was fantastic.

7/1 Sunday

We decided to move closer to town today as another Tropical Wave is due to pass by tonight with 25-30 knot winds. I had checked our anchor when we anchored & we knew it was sideways so we needed to get it reanchored. We would have moved it before but M/V Gabrielle was over our anchor. As long as there wasn't too much wind we were fine but with the Tropical wave coming in we wanted to reanchor. Also, there was a huge barge tied up to a mooring buoy where we were located. I was uncomfortable with that as I remembered in Simpson Bay, St. Marten a huge barge broke free & hit the surrounding boats. We anchored once & the anchor didn't hold. So, we anchored again but I didn't feel it was right so Larry dove on the anchor. Sure enough, we were on a rock so we needed to re-anchor. I told him to take the portable depth sounder & check the other spots in the anchorage. He found a spot really close to shore so we moved again. I felt we were to close to the boat on out port side although they said we would be fine. We probably would have stayed there if the forecast were better. But the weatherman said we were going to get a Tropical wave with 25-35 knots so we felt uncomfortable. So, we re-anchored again. We checked the anchor & we were fine.

I did some laundry today & hung it up on the clothesline to dry. I have been hand-washing clothes for a while. Only if I see a cheap laundry do I do it there, otherwise I wash on the boat. In the Tobago Cays, we had so much wind we had more electric than we could use & were running the watermaker everyday as we were using a lot of water. We were snorkeling everyday & the snorkeling equipment needed to be rinsed every day. Now we don't have as much wind so we try to run the water maker every few days. We only make about 6 gallons of water per hour & use about 18 amps an hour. So, the water maker is our biggest energy hog, after the refrigerator. We like sunny windy days as we get lots of electric then. We try to keep the water tanks as full as possible. We are very conservative with water use. I will never take unlimited water for granted ever again.

It's Joe's, on Legacy, 60th birthday tomorrow so we are throwing him a surprise birthday party tonight. We all chipped in & we are going to get pizza. I made him my special marble brownies. All the dinghies are going to go over to his boat at the same time singing Happy Birthday.

7/2 Monday

Well, we all had a great time on Legacy last night. Joe was really surprised about the party. I think he was really pleased we had the party for him. I woke up late this morning- around 8:30. I was up from 6- 6:30 & then went back to bed. I made homemade biscuits from scratch this morning. I'm getting pretty good at it!

S/V Pride called & wanted to have a Ladies get together at the yacht club today at 1pm. Great idea- gets us off the boat & with a bunch of ladies for a while! No guys! I went along with 17 other ladies. We all had a good time. We introduced ourselves. Then we all had to answer: what would we do if we were not out cruising & what 3 things we missed most about home. We all had such a good time I didn't get get back to the boat until 5pm. We need to do this more often! I made chili for dinner & we spent a quiet night at home.
