Diane's Diary

Grenada - Part 2

7/3 Tuesday

We took the bus for 1USD each into Hillsborough today to get an extension with customs. No problem- we are good until the end of September now. We still do not know if we will fly home from Trinidad or Grenada. We are waiting until we get to Grenada to make some plane reservations though. We went to the bank, walked around town & ate lunch out. Eating out was a treat- with the high prices for restaurants around here we hardly ever do it. The lunch was 50EC- about $18 USD but that's a lot, as the locals don't make much money. It was definitely a tourist restaurant. We both had lambi, which is conch. Not a bad lunch but not worth $18USD. We are waiting until we get to Trinidad & Venezuela to eat out a lot- we understand the food is really cheap & good. Some people told us it's cheaper to eat out than to cook on the boat. Sounds good to me- can't wait to get there!

7/4 Wednesday

I worked on email & updating my logs in the am.

Kristali, Driftwood & I planned a Fourth of July party at the Carriacou Yacht Club for 2pm today. We invited all the cruisers in the anchorage. Since most people do not listen to the VHF radio in the anchorage, Connie & I went to all the boats in the anchorage yesterday afternoon & invited them. I even announced it on the Cruisers Security Net on the SSB (actually several people told me they heard it on the SSB & came over for the party!) Everyone brought a dish to share. We had over 50 cruisers there! The party lasted from 2-5. Everyone seemed to have a good time. Several foreigners didn't know about our holiday so I explained it to them. I guess I don't know much about when France or other countries got their Independence either! We were so stuffed from all the food we didn't even eat dinner!

I was tired when we got back so I laid around for a while. Then, I wrote in my cruiser book I am writing.

7/5 Thursday

Connie from Kristali & I went into Hillsborough by bus this morning. The food boat from Grenada arrives Wednesday night so the food co-op has fresh fruit & vegetables. Sounds good- strawberries, blueberries or raspberries???? Not a chance. Anyway, we did get some fresh fruit & vegetables- bananas, green peppers, onions, coconut, mango- the usual island fruit. I sure would have preferred strawberries, blueberries or raspberries though!

We had several rainsqualls but got back to the boat without getting wet. We've had little wind & not enough sun so we had to run the engine for a few hours. Larry hates running the engine at anchor as it's not good for the engine but sometimes it can't be helped. We haven't had a lot of wind & sun here in Tyrell Bay.

S/V Kajsa came into the anchorage today. We haven't seen them since St. Lucia so they came over for drinks. It was nice seeing them again. They had gone back to the US for a visit so it was good hearing about what's happening in the US. We haven't seen a US newspaper since St. Lucia - almost 2 months ago.

7/6 Friday

We went for a walk up the hill today to get a good overview of Carricou with Kajsa, Windham, & Kristali. Kajsa & Windham continued on a long hike but the rest of us only had Teva's on so decided it would not be a good idea to continue. As we were walking down the trail, we had to pass 2 large pigs that were tied up & blocking the trail. Luckily, they decided we weren't worth it, & didn't bother with us. Nowhere have I ever had to pass a pig to continue hiking!! We, Kristali & Akila dinghied into the mangroves. Nice but the mangroves are not too high up & I wouldn't trust it if the wind is from the west as it really doesn't have much protection. I wouldn't have wanted to be there when Hurricane Lenny came roaring through the anchorage 2 years ago. Footloose came over for awhile to talk to us about Trinidad- they love it there. We cleaned the boat bottom from 2-4, a lot of hard work. Then we went over to Lady M III for cocktails at 4:30. We had a great time & wound up staying until 8:30. We were going to leave tomorrow but we didn't get the dinghy up on deck & we were exhausted from all the work today. The heat really takes a lot out of you around here.

7/7 Saturday

Larry worked on the website this morning, I hand washed laundry from 9:30-12. It's a lot of work to hand wash laundry using just a bucket but it's rare to find a Laundromat let alone a cheap one so most cruisers hand wash it. I borrowed a cookbook from Kristali & spent a few hours coping down recipes. I made eggplant parm for dinner but since it's impossible to find mozzarella cheese I had to use cheddar cheese, which can be found everywhere down here. We spent a quiet night at home for a change instead of socializing.

7/8 Sunday

Kajsa left this morning & we almost did too but we just weren't ready to leave. Instead we spent the day working on the boat. I re-oiled all the interior teak. I had not done it since we left the US & with the bright sun always shining on the teak here it really needed it. It took me 3 hours & I didn't even do inside the drawers since it would have meant taking everything out. Time to do it in Trinidad! After lunch, I copied more recipes from the cookbook Kristali lent me. We went over to their boat in the afternoon so I could return it. We will definitely leave for Grenada in the morning. We've definitely been here too long & I'm anxious to get to Grenada. I wanted to return Connie's cookbook since they aren't leaving for Grenada yet & we aren't sure when we will see them next. We got back to the boat around 4pm & put the dinghy on deck. We will transit short distances with the dinghy trailing or when we are in the company of other boats but there's too much of a risk of losing it underway. I wish we had dinghy davits. Anyway, there was almost no wind in the anchorage & the boats were turning different ways. Jacobite later told us there was an adverse current affecting Grenada & Carriciou & that caused the strange conditions.
