Diane's Diary
The Grenadines - Part 1
6/2 Saturday
We wanted to sleep in this morning, as we were both tired from all the activity the past few weeks of having company. However, I guess our bodies are just used to getting up early so I was up by 6 am as usual. I made homemade biscuits from scratch. They came out pretty good- I never made them from scratch before. We went into town & cleared into customs around 11. After noontime customs charges overtime so we try never to clear in when we will have to pay overtime. Bequia is one of the few islands with a Saturday clearance with no overtime charges. We walked around for around 2 hours but it was very hot since it was the middle of the day & there was no breeze. I tried to take a nap in the afternoon but just couldn't sleep. I cooked up some chicken cutlets in the afternoon. Legacy invited us over for cocktails so we went over there around 5:30. We had a canned dinner & it was off to bed by 10pm.
6/3 Sunday
We both were woken up by loud music in the anchorage before 6am & then couldn't get back to sleep. I made some more homemade biscuits & 2 crab quiches this morning as I had to use the pie shells or they were going to expire. I did my logs from around 1-4pm we went swimming off the boat & I saw a stingray right near the boat on the ocean floor! Incredible! - Larry didn't believe me till he came in the water & saw it himself. We are anchored in about 15 feet of water. We had Legacy & Great White Wonder over to the boat for cocktails & everyone had a good time.
6/4 Monday
Today is the holiday Whit Monday in most of the Caribbean holidays (they seem to have a lot of holidays down here) so all the stores are closed. There is a big carnival today. I borrowed a hair dryer from Legacy to defrost the freezer - it was really bad. Fortunately, I was able to get it out in one big piece so it didn't take that long. Unfortunately, it used up a lot of amp hours to defrost it & I only had the blow dryer on for less then a half hour. I was lucky to get most of the ice out in one piece. It just uses too much electricity to use it at sea. Next time I will try to do it in a marina but we don't go into marinas too often. I caught up on all my logs from 10:30- noon. Tonight Legacy is having a big party on their boat with lots of other boaters. Legacy was disappointed Ken didn't invite him over for the last GWW party but Ken said he didn't invite them as he thought Legacy was a charter boat. Ken from Great White Wonder told him if he wanted to have a party just go around to all the boats, ask them to bring a potluck & booze & everyone will come. That's what they do. Joe from Legacy asked Ken to invite everyone so he did. I'm going to bring one of the crab quiches I made.
6/5 Tuesday
The party on Legacy was great yesterday. About 30 people were there with everyone dancing on the deck. We all had a great time! Another Tropical wave passed last night with winds in excess of 40 knots. With the wind really shrieking all night long, I hardly slept well at all. I was up most of the night. We got up & listened to the daily radio nets. I was so tired I went back to bed until nearly 12. I rarely go back to bed like that but I was just exhausted. I got my haircut in town today. It was $18USD - by a professional hairdresser- she just cut it- no wash or blow dry. It was the first time I had my haircut in 3 months. It really needed a good cut. I was glad to finally get it cut. I went with another cruiser, S/V Jacobite. Afterwards we went for a beer & then I met GWW who gave me a lift back to the boat. I updated the expenses (Actually the biggest expense we have is for food & I was already provisioned pretty well) it was cloudy & overcast with gusty winds all day. We stayed in by ourselves tonight.
6/6 Wednesday
More wind last night. This anchorage has been very rolly as we are anchored way on the outside of the harbor near Princess Margaret beach. It's been blowing about 20-25 since we got here with some gusts as high as 40 occasionally. We dinghied into town this morning & met GWW & Mutual Fun so we all went to a bar & had a few drinks (it was around 11:30 so all of you reading this don't think we drink at the crack of dawn!). GWW decided to have another party tonight. We walked around town for a little while. We played "bocce ball" on the beach at 3pm. Then we went over to GWW for another great cruiser party. There were probably about 30 cruisers there. Everyone had a great time.
6/7 Thursday
It's still blowing out - around 20- 25 knots with convection activity from a Tropical Wave. I didn't sleep well again last night so I was up very early this morning. I was at the Laundromat before 8 this morning. It's a good thing too as they only had about 4 washers we could use - the rest seemed to be for the charter sailboats or locals I think. I was back to the boat before 9 with all the wet laundry. It cost about $3USD per load just to wash. It would be another $3 USD to dry & it would not probably dry in the allotted time so you would have to spend another $3 USD to dry it again. Plus, they only seem to have cold water down here so it's hard to get all the stains out. I put all the wash on the line to dry. Unfortunately, it rained hard out again & all the laundry got wet. Oh well, it certainly dries fast with all this wind. I made some minestrone soup & leftover crab quiche for lunch as the rains came down. After lunch, I took a nap & Larry went to the Internet store.
GWW left today. We will surely miss them but we know we will meet up with them in Trinidad. It was great seeing them again. Ken had mentioned us in an article he wrote for the July issue of the Caribbean Compass. He is a regular writer for the Compass. We love this free cruiser paper.
6/8 Friday
We left the boat before 10am & went into town for the day. We took the bus (.30USD pp) to Friendship Bay- it was really beautiful. The winds were really up again today. We could really see them whipping up on this, the windward side of the island. We walked around for a while & then walked downhill back to town. We were glad we didn't walk to Friendship Bay, as it was uphill. We had chicken rotis for lunch in town. We did some food shopping, went to the Caribbean Compass office (we wanted to tell them how much we enjoyed the magazine) bought t-shirts & went to the Internet place. We got back to the boat around 4. S/V Kristali stopped by & asked us over for cocktails. We took quick showers. I made my famous sun dried tomatoes & cream cheese dip & we went over. They had built the boat themselves & did a fantastic job of it. It's very interesting to see other peoples' boats as sometimes you get good ideas. Larry saw a manta ray floating in the water near our boat. I saw it also & it was huge.
