Diane's Diary
St. Lucia - Part 3
5/31 Thursday
We went back to the Hyatt for a last quick dip in the pool. We get sick of saltwater so it's a pleasure to be able to swim in freshwater. We don't know when we will be able to do that again. We also took showers again for the last time with real showers. It will probably be a long time before we have this luxury again so we wanted to take advantage of it. We were going to stay in St. Lucia for a few days to do various boat chores. However, Monday is a holiday in Bequia so if we don't clear in by Saturday (no overtime until noon) we would have to wait until Tuesday. So, we have decided to sail tomorrow. We are going to bypass St. Vincent due to the various boat boy problems we have heard about there & sail right to Bequia. It will be a very long day so we need to leave before 6am in order to make it.
We moved the boat back over near the marina but still outside the lagoon. We cleared out through customs (they forgot to charge us a few upon arrival & didn't catch it on our departure), went to the bank to get more EC dollars, to the hardware store, supermarket, & checked up on Kajsa. We wanted to get dinghy gas but just missed them as they closed at 4pm. We went back to the boat, hauled the dinghy up on deck for our passage (when we travel down the lee of an island we tow it behind us but we always haul it on deck for any inter island passages), stored all the gear around the boat & just relaxed as tomorrow will be a long day.
6/1 Friday
I didn't sleep well last night, as I was probably nervous about the passage. I was up before the alarm clock but just lay in bed for a while. We wanted to leave at first light. We had the anchor up & the sails raised before 6am. Fortunately, we had a wonderful trip. We motor sailed down the coast of St. Lucia. We wanted to sail but we have to go 70 miles today so need to go at least 6 knots in order to make it's completely dark by 7pm. We had a wonderful sail between St. Lucia & St. Vincent-15-18 knot winds from the SE with 5-7 foot seas. At some parts we were doing over 9 knots. We had to motor sail down the coast of St. Vincent as the wind died when we got behind the lee of the island. From St. Vincent to Bequia we were hard on the wind with SE winds about 15-18 knots & 3-5 foot seas. I had taken the Sturgeron the night before & again before we left. I didn't get sick on this passage nor from Martinique- St. Lucia. I think I just need to take the medication the night before. Or maybe my body is just getting used to the inter-island passages. It's not the winds that bother me but the rough seas. I have gotten sick on many of the inter-island passages before these two. I never get sick when we transit down the lee of any islands.
We arrived in Bequia at 4:30 so the passage took us 10.5 hours. Upon arrival, we saw Legacy & our friends from St. Maarten- S/V Great White Wonder. We haven't seen them since St. Maarten so it was really good to see them. We "parked" in the American neighborhood in the anchorage- there seems to be a lot of Americans in this neck of the woods! Great White Wonder told us to come on over as they were having a party at 5pm. Larry didn't want to go as he was tired from the passage but I knew he would feel better once we got there. We put the sailcover on the boat, washed it down (we keep water in our sun shower to wash the boat down after our passages as it gets so salty), launched the dinghy & went over there. We had a great time catching up with them again. There were about 20 people at the party. We were practically the last to leave around 9pm. We were tired when we got back but glad we went.
